Smart lady, very smartly made the kiln, now I can make it. I will it download it also. My issue is making glaze, do you have any simple video on ash glaze. Because it can acquired easily then other glaze materials.
Galvanized metal creates toxic fumes when heated to these levels. Much better to use a clean oil barrel for environment and lungs. If it feels too large you can cut it down to size.
Awesome video! When you’re firing do you need a specific torch to reach the temperature? Also this may seem like a dumb question but is the top hole for ventilation and the bottom one for the torch?

You can bisque fire in a kiln like this, but it does take a long time. There is a video by a guy who demonstrates bisque firing in a diy raku kiln. I will see if I can find the link for you, let me have a look...

Nice job very simple and informative (with the subtitles). Definitely making one here very soon. I found I can get the pins and tabs, and kiln wrap just from where I do pottery at. I assume you used just the heavy duty garbage can like at Home Depot, (well your probably in the Uk) (wish I was), the ones here the lids are flat. Did you use your electric kiln shelves in this or new ones? I was told one could set them on a cinder block but I don’t know about that.
Hi Jason, Yes, I bought the garbage can from amazon. Nothing special. I used regular electric kilns shelves in the kiln. And I do put it on cinder blocks. But I also put a layer of ceramic fiber between the base of the kiln and the blocks, to stop heat loss. And to stop the cinder blocks getting too hot. Just thought it might be helpful to avoid galvanized anything at raku temperatures. When zinc oxidizes it creates noxious fumes that are a welder's bane. Some would say it's toxic. But do your own homework and you decide. And to top it off, these zinc oxide fumes can really screw up a glaze.
Hi Thanks for the video it was really helpful. Looking at what's in your kit I think I have bought a kit from the same supplier as yourself. Just trying to be helpful here: You haven't used a ceramic blanket hardener/rigidiser which is unsafe as you can get particulate dust, which you should not inhale, when using the kiln. There are videos which show you how to use it. Also you weren't wearing a respirator whilst handling the blanket which is unsafe for the same reasons.

Thanks for pointing this out! It seems many potters not only autodidact ones in other countries totally ignore many very aspecys pertaining to both health of the artist and environmental toxins. To a Scandinavian its really quite shocking! It's a mandatory integral part of ant pottery course here! To me, the urge to want to work with pottery from the earth, doesn't tango with not caring about the environment, and potters have died young since the dawn of man due to poor understanding of how you practice without subjecting onesself (or ones students) to extremely unhealthy fumes, dust, etc. I've gone abroad to work with ceramics and have been utterly horrified at common practice that's sure to give you silicosis, and glaze residue simply washed out in the sink containing toxins that will kill all the life in a medium sized lake. Simply bc they don't know better, and wont listen even when informed. Worth mentioning is that the ceramic fiber used should be so calked "superwool" or is classed as carciogenic. I suggest double lining of this dimension, the problems she later encounters using her kiln are eliminated, plus you only change the inner layer of wool when needed saving a ton of work. You can also position bricks instead of pillar supports in an open triangle shape so the flame bounces from one to the other leading it around evenly. I've not used cobalt for years bc it's very hard to source ethically and we all know the reality of so called cobalt mining (deadly third world child labour). Artists need to care more about the impact of their work (not to mention hobbies!!!) Nobody wants to make or support killer art. Thanks again for caring 🙏💕
Can this kiln be used for standard bisque and glaze firing? This seems like a cost effective quick idea for beginners like myself to try out pottery and see if it sticks before investing in expensive equipment. Many thanks :)
Hello, you can use it to do standard bisque and glaze firing. However, it would be labour intensive. Bisque firing and glaze firing takes hours, so it would mean you'd have to stand by it for a very long time. But it can be done. Just tested mine after building, can't get it past 875 F even after 20 minutes. The flame comes back out of the hole into the torch. I have a rectangular hole in the top so I should be getting a draft. Maybe the thermometer isn't installed right(?) I have a DM6801A+ and I drilled holes into the side of the trash can and put the rods through. Anybody know if this can be a problem, with the rods touching the metal can? So many things to consider, but I'm not even close to 1450 F which I need to fire enamel onto copper.

What a waste of ni chome wire Ni chrome is used to wind electric heating elements ( coils) and as mentioned you should never use a galvanized garbage can as the zinc coating when it gases is toxic and can kill you. You are better off with a painted steel drum and burning a fire in it to get rid of the paint the apply a ceramic coating made for automitive headers on the outside. Then start a fire in the can in an open area to gas off the volatile's in the paint.
Ummm I hate to be the guy bitching about safety on someone else’s RUclips video, but have you by any chance seen any angle grinder accident pics or videos? I think maybe you should look a couple up, I’ll leave it at that.
Poor design, kiln floor should be made with insulating firebrick nt ceramic fiber, kiln posts will set solid on flat brick surface. Ceramic buttons must be made of fired raku clay or better use refractory clay, try bending and tying the nichrome wire on the outside not the inside of the kiln. Use more buttons in staggered rows, same with the lid. The burner port at the bottom should be round not square or make the port w firebrick. Last spray the fiber walls with a coat of sodium silicate to seal it for many uses. The hole in the lid should also be round shaped. These changes will give you a longer lasting and efficient raku kiln. The kiln in the video will have many problems. Also the hole in the lid would do better on the top of the can with the handle removed and 2 handles relocated on the sides of the lid.
I'm going to counter Erin B's comment. Please don't take this as negative, but constructive. I don't think this is a "great informative video." All the parts are there, but it's 14 minutes of watching and *listening* to you scuffle about. Narrate it. Make it engaging. As it stands, there are plenty of 2-minute articles with pictures out there that get the same point across. It's a shame because, in my quick searches for Raku kiln vids on youtube, the few that filtered to the top of the algorithms results are all like this.... quiet or irritating background noise, with no substantial information or commentary that make it the content producer's own unique take. I want to hear your experiences in the build, issues, and tactics to overcome them, something you may have done to improve upon the basic design. Cheers.
Hi there, thanks for your feedback. You are right, it's better to have commentary. I think this was one of the first videos that I made, and I felt awkward doing a voiceover. I've since got over that a bit, and I do tend to do commentaries now. It's a learning curve. If I do a video of firing it, I will have a narrative, and talk about issues, I've encountered using it.
Not to start a hullabaloo but i like it as it is. I have to make one for my daughter and if I can't work it out from watching you then perhaps I should not start...! We're all anxiously waiting to see you fire it up so don't waste time prettying up that promised video.

That's true, but I'm limited on storage space and I didn't want sharp edges sticking out on the outside.
I would recommend a longer blade to cut out the finer bats

It's a small round kiln shelf on 3 kiln props. You can buy these from a pottery supplier. What country are you in? I could recommend a supplier...

If that trash can is galvanized steel, the zinc will vaporize at about 420 c causing toxic fumes
Do you think it would heat to 420 with the insulation?
And aren't raku glazes at over a 1000°? Not to mention what ZnO does to those glazes. Good point.
How do you measure temp? You mentioned a thermopile, but they can't handle glazing temps.

Also the hole in the lid would do better on the top of the can with the handle removed and 2 handles relocated on the sides of the lid.
I'm going to counter Erin B's comment. Please don't take this as negative, but constructive. I don't think this is a "great informative video." All the parts are there, but it's 14 minutes of watching and *listening* to you scuffle about. Narrate it. Make it engaging. As it stands, there are plenty of 2-minute articles with pictures out there that get the same point across. It's a shame because, in my quick searches for Raku kiln vids on youtube, the few that filtered to the top of the algorithms results are all like this.... quiet or irritating background noise, with no substantial information or commentary that make it the content producer's own unique take. I want to hear your experiences in the build, issues, and tactics to overcome them, something you may have done to improve upon the basic design. Cheers.
Hi there, thanks for your feedback. You are right, it's better to have commentary. I think this was one of the first videos that I made, and I felt awkward doing a voiceover. I've since got over that a bit, and I do tend to do commentaries now. It's a learning curve. If I do a video of firing it, I will have a narrative, and talk about issues, I've encountered using it.
