As a lifelong Watford fan I could never understand why they continued to call us an up and over football team. That era was the most exciting time I can remember in the entire time I supported them. Ask any Liverpool supporter what their opinion of John Barnes, they were an exciting talented attacking team. Sadly the game before our FA cup final against Everton we ended up losing Wilf Rostron over a bad refereeing decision in Luton, he was a player who could make things happen.
Ahh, the old nonsense being spouted about the 'long ball' style - coined by Jeff Powell and his Fleet Street pals who couldn't handle a newly promoted team showing their favourite clubs no respect at all and regularly wiping the floor with them during the Taylor golden years. Incredible to realise that the dinosaur Powell is still working for the Daily Mail. Good to hear Bestie say some positive things; class off the pitch as well as on it.
@@duckjive1 The influence Fleet Street had over shaping the views of how teams were perceived was staggering. They had their favourites (Terry Venables being one of them), and those they perceived to be 'not worthy' (your Watford's, Wimbledon's etc). For all its faults, one of the greatest things the internet/social media has done is take away the power those dinosaurs had. Today's columnists are a laughing stock amongst fans. Of course, there are morons on social media also, but they're not the only voice you hear - unlike back in 'old football' days, when the newspapers ruled.
