Apparently Billy Bob Thornton didn't go through any cosmetic changes for this role. He just jutted out his jaw, shaved his head, and walked a little funny. The guy really is an amazing actor.
I’ve watched this scene many times. It’s one of my favorites in its simplicity. I think what makes his performance so pleasant is that he doesn’t know anything about Carl, yet he is very patient and cordial with him, even asking if Carl wanted him to read the entire menu. You never see that, except maybe in the south. The whole movie is filled with characters like that, which is why Doyle is such a stark contrast. In another movie Doyle might have just come across as a jerk, but in this world he’s so horrific that the only choice is to eliminate him.
He said in an interview what his intentions were with this film, and I think he started out quite solid. Maybe the other films are starting with softer intended outcomes.
Lee Zeidel Oscar Nominated performance. Thornton didn’t win for acting, he won for Best Adapting Screenplay, since Thornton first made a short film from the feature length script to get funding for the film. Geoffrey Rush won Best Actor for Shine the year this film came out.
The frostee cream guy is Jim Jarmusch, director of films such as Dead Man Walking, Coffee and Cigarettes, Broken Flowers, Only Lovers Left Alive, and Ghost Dog, way of the samurai. I highly recommend checking out his films!

There's a handful of movies that I feel really capture the south; This is one of those films. It really gives you a look at the mundanity of southern life. If you want to know what it's like to live in a small southern town, that NEVER had its hey day, look no further. The Coen Brothers tend to do a damn good job of capturing the flavors of regions as well. People tend to think of the south as being wild and crazy, and sure there is that aspect. But there's this silent nature, this "waiting for God" aspect of the south, that I feel this film really captures. I've lived in a few towns like this growing up.
I know you made this comment a long time ago but I was so touched I had to reach out. I have loved this movie since it came out but waited until tonight to share it with my 18 year old daughter. We laughed and cried and after the baby brother scene even my husband whispered “Christ” and I caught a tear in his eye as he left to smoke. I waited 18 long years to make sure my daughter could really take in the depth of this movie. It makes you live in your own heart for a moment and ironically it’s too small and it feels like it might explode. My husband and I pointed out early in the film that this movie encapsulated the southern feel 30 years ago. Good ‘ole boys, wholesome women, hospitality, the fear of God, the ensemble of unlikely friends, the willingness to forgive simply because we’re all sinners and humbled before the Lord. On occasion, justice must be reluctantly served. The south doesn’t feel like that anymore. Now it’s anger, fear, vengeance and glory. And they think only the big cities have problems. Smh. It’s a damn shame. I miss the old ways. Thanks for pointing out how it was.
I had never heard of Billy Bob Thornton when a friend insisted I borrow this movie from him. I took it home and read the credits...hmmm, written, directed, and starring the same person. I've watched other movies like this. "That never works out", I thought, "you can't do all those jobs and excel at all of them, this must be some big ego guy that thinks he's all that". I stuck the movie in anyway. Two hours and twenty-eight minutes later, I became Mr. Thronton's biggest fan. What brilliance in every aspect! This movie is a national treasure.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 he borrowed the movie from him... that should tell you that this is an old story. Or maybe his priorities are different than yours and he doesn't care about celebrities. Either way, no need to be condescending. Peace among worlds brother.
@@TheGreatHorseradish there are still good movies being made but something like Sling Blade would not be a major studio release if it was even made at all. I also agree with one of the comments that art and movies are being policed by certain groups. Again, if Sling Blade came out today there would probably be Twitter outrage over Billy Bob Thornton’s performance. A lot of what makes it to theaters (pre-covid) is mediocre in my opinion. It’s mostly blockbuster action or superhero flicks.
@@TheGreatHorseradish It's a fallacy that 'offensive content' as you put it, is equivalent to Anti-SJW or Critical Race Theory. Offensiveness is relative, and is a result of liberty. Liberty to offend, and liberty to be offended. Example: If everybody on the planet chose not to ever offend - that would lead to there being no offenses made, right? But if everyone chose TO BE offended, it wouldn't matter if offenses were made or not, everything would be offensive. My point? Choose both not to offend, and not to be offended. That being said - SJW and CRT are all about narcissism and being offended or hurt in one way or another, and neither help the planet or any story in any ways. And when they push these things into stories, they push out any good and interesting things that were in them and leave uninteresting, useless filth. Okay, I'm done. ✌🕊
Dwight Yoakam's performance as Doyle is fantastic , it was the country singers first acting part in a movie and he nailed it everybody wanted to beat the SH** out of Doyle .
Also, I'm looking at a copy of the DVD right now. The back of the case shows that disc 1 includes "Feature Commentary With Writer / Director Billy Bob Thornton." The synopsis of the movie on the back of the case includes the statement "...written, directed, and starring Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa)!" However, whoever is claiming the Tasty Freeze employee actor directed the movie is probably just trolling.
I agree danny... any time you wish you could reach into a television set, and pluck the actor out into reality, and strangle them on the spot, they have indeed done there job....
This movie had no less than five masterclasses in acting. Billy Bob Thornton: Once in a generation brilliant performance as Carl. Dwight Yoakam: unforgettable, never hated a fictional charecter more. John Ritter: Just terrific, my god did that man go too soon. Lucas Black: Utterly exceptional, one of the best performances from a child actor ever captured on film. And yes, who could forget that several minutes at the beginning with the late, great J.T. Walsh?
Sling Blade is right up there with Forrest Gump! I watch them every time I run across them flipping through the channels" because how good of an actor Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Hanks are! Great video.

This movie is top notch. Thornton created Karl and it was genius. On a talk show was asked to show how he changed his face to play Karl. He stuck out his jaw and did Karl for a moment. Asked what doing that was like, Thornton said well, it hurts, then smiled. I've never seen an actor transform himself so completely before or since (without CGI). His hunched back, haircut, pants pulled up high, accent and mouth. I never made the connection until I looked up the movie one day and I was in disbelief when I saw that it was good looking Thornton. Many thanks to him for this gem. Being queer myself, I was also very impressed with the inclusion and presentation of gay characters. Thoughtfully done and very touching.

@@MARKIEBANUNCE - "NO, His decisions WERE the RIGHT ONES! Its the SYSTEM that is fucked up! NOT HIM!" First, let me explain that the law is set up to punish people for criminal acts. But the "fucked up" system you're talking about only punishes people AFTER they have committed a criminal offense. Do you understand what I'm writing here? In other words, the State would not give you a lethal injection for murdering another person until AFTER you've murdered a person. Does that make sense to you? You don't have to worry about losing your drivers license because you were driving drunk until AFTER you were actually driving drunk. Doesn't that seem fair to you? But according to you, Karl had every right to execute Doyle for something he "might" do in the future, which was hurt Frank. According to you, Karl made the correct decision and decided he had the right to be judge, jury and executioner. And you have no problem with this. Does the legal system need to be improved? Of course it does. But that doesn't give you the right to decide who is going to die and who isn't. And if you really believe it does give you, or Karl, the right to do as you please, you're a moron.
Nahhhh you can. It’s like a 50/50 chance whether your cashier is the sweetest person ever or an asshole that hates their life and you for daring to order.
One of, if not the best acting jobs I’ve ever seen. People who don’t think BBT is a great actor, don’t know acting. How Geoffrey Rush beat him for best actor that year, I’ll never figure out. But oh well, everyone has different tastes. So I guess more people though that Rush was better.
best performance of all-time; no one else has ever completely transformed themselves into their character without make-up or prosthetics the BBT did here; the next closest thing would be Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Gary 828 I was watching Inside The Actors Studio and during the interview James Lipton asked if he could do a bit of Carl. BBT says that he never does it by request, but because the audience was filled with film students, he would do it. So he put his head down for 5 seconds or so, picked it back up and I didn’t even recognize him. It was unreal. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I think he wrote and directed the movie if I’m not mistaking.
I think he put on quite a bit of weight for it. Carl is supposed to be a very large imposing figure.
The paper hat and taters deserved more awards for this scene. Truly underated.
And mustard...mmm-hmm.
Something really pleasant about jarmusch's acting here
It reminds me, for some reason, of an early 80s film
I was just wondering if it was jim. Good movie maker.
This here's a Frostie Cream
I didn’t know that was Jim Jarmusch
The acting in this movie was totally believable, and one of my favorites.

Great films. But you mean Dead Man, not Dead Man Walking. That's a different film entirely.

mc cabe and mrs miller is an underrated masterpiece.
What cave have you been living in? Billy Bob Thorton is famous.

Damn remember when a major studio would put a movie like this in theaters. Everything is so mediocre now.

Walsh?
He plays a really good villain. He was also really good in Panic Room.

@@MARKIEBANUNCE - "NO, His decisions WERE the RIGHT ONES! Its the SYSTEM that is fucked up! NOT HIM!"
First, let me explain that the law is set up to punish people for criminal acts.
And if you really believe it does give you, or Karl, the right to do as you please, you're a moron.

best performance of all-time; no one else has ever completely transformed themselves into their character without make-up or prosthetics the BBT did here; the next closest thing would be Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Gary 828 I was watching Inside The Actors Studio and during the interview James Lipton asked if he could do a bit of Carl. BBT says that he never does it by request, but because the audience was filled with film students, he would do it.
