1984 : the Year of John McEnroe. His win-loss tally that year was an astounding 82-3. To this day ( in 2020 ), it remains the best win-loss tally of the Open era ( from 1968 onwards ).
Jimmy should have lived through the growing pains with the W Pro Staff 85 in '84. It was like he decided to play with one hand behind his back from Fall '84-'87.
First of all, the tennis was sublime in this clip and throughout this match. And the tension between these two!!!! Wow that was cool. It was sort of lost on the Japanese crowd, though. This was actually the Suntory Cup, which if I'm not mistaken did not count on the ATP tour records.
I would find it weird playing on a court without tramlines at the side. I know you don't use them for singles but the geometry would put me off I guess. I love the tension between Mac and Connors. Pure entertainment.
Don't be fooled - McEnroe's slow pace on the ground strokes is on purpose - he saves the pace for when it's needed - unlike the 'hit-it-as-hard-as-you-can-every-time-crowd' of today. Today's players don't know how to create a point.
@hotroute It is certainly possible! When I listen to it thinking about your suggestion, I can certainly hear that. hen I think of what I originally heard, I can still hear that. Either way, it wasn't very inflammatory, not nearly as bad as what Connors was thinking it was! lol
@jacob767 Yes & No. This was in Tokyo, but there were not Ariake Coliosseum this year (Ariake Coliosseum opened in 1987). This event was exibition of 4 top players. This year:Mac, Zimbo, Y Noah & A Gomez?? sorry, I forgot. This event held at Yoyogi National Stadium(spcially installed court). Seiko Super Tennis(that called Tokyo indoor 1978-1995) held there till 1989.
@KingCast65 He just said "you give it to me, I'll give it you even more than that". But Connors thought he was telling him WHERE he'd give it to him. LOL.
Bonham House when Björn Borg says you’re an ass and Stefan Edberg can’t say anything nice about you except ‘he had a nice backhand’, then yea you’re probably more than a bully.

84’, The year of McEnroe. Beautiful to watch.
So relaxed. Playing like he absolutely knows he can win the point whenever he feels like it.
For that era, and it was a great era for tennis, the 84' McEnroe played the greatest tennis. Fun to watch to this day.
The first point shows how unbelievably great McEnroe played in 1984. He did this repeatedly.

McEnroe '84, Federer '06, and Djokovic '011 are the 3 most dominant seasons in modern tennis history.
82-3 by Mac in 1984 is the best

Where’s the rest of this video? Damn good one.
Having played in the era of Borg and Connors, McEnroe usually doesn´t get much credit for it.. but man, was he lightning quick 3:37
@Esteban Gonzalez Yes. I was talking about foot speed, though.
@Steve Eells Faster than Connors? Maybe. Faster than Borg? Uh... No.

@datacipher I think he says (after having listened to it several times) "I'll give it to you in the ones that matter."
What exactly did Mac say at 2:50?

maybe so, but it was nice to see him put that whiney little bitch in his place. That said, I always enjoyed and respected MacEnroe's game.
True but then got his arse handed to him by Lendl in the finals :(
mac went down ,,,weed and mental issues
