The pigeons are racing pigeons and pigeon fanciers would pay a nominal fee to enter a distance race, like in the UK, the registered pigeons (the ones with a special colour coded and text on the ring that's put onto a young bird that's been typically bred for racing. And they can fetch serious money. Anyway a regional area in the UK would have a race and the fanciers would put their pirds in a basket and meet at one of the venues in an area for a selected time. There's probably 5 or 6 locations they goto, and the driver/handler will load them into the special truck baskets in the back that you can see in the video, he will assume the roll of feeding and watering the birds till they reach their destination, typically at the least from 100 miles up to a 1000 miles depending on the race, so from the north West UK, the truck would take them to across the water to France and release them all with in a certain amount of time BUT at a prearranged time and date, now all the pigeon numbers have been recorded when they were taken to the truck and a special rubber ring would be slipped onto the leg of the bird, the rubber band would have a specific number on it that would be no red of and assigned to the particular person racing his birds, The object is to get the fastest bird home the soonest, they will have a clue on when they might be back home for, so the pigeon fancier would keep an eye on his pigeon loft where the birds are trained to go home to, and when his birds arrive he used to have a special clock that was calibrated and was serial number to that particular person, he would take the rubber band off the bird and put it into a part of the clock hen press a button that makes note of the time, the pigeon fancier would log his time and whem he would go to his club and take his clock for confirmation, then the prize can be worked out, some prizes have been in the £40000 for a particular race, it's a very serious race and you can see why the military used to use them for delivering messages in the world wars.
