I had the chance to see this exhibition in Tokyo. It was fascinating to see all those generations of tea bowls next to each other, each imbued with its creator's spirit. Further, there was a historical background given in addition to each artists bio, which revealed much about the circumstances the potters had to work under at specific points in time. I had the impression that Raku Kichizaemon maybe strayed a little further from the traditions of his predecessors, going into a more bold direction. But I think in spirit he was still true to the roots of Raku. Weighing tradition against the own way is in the end the decision of each generation.
