  • This small document of the Heritage Tour in South Bank Redcar and Cleveland was filmed and edited by Abboud Mahjoup for Transitions17 as part of Helen Stratford's artists residency and delivered by John Chilvers a local resident. Transitions17 has been supported by Arts Council England Grants for the Arts Lottery Fund to support the visibility and use of Saabat Gallery. Artists working with the community and helping to develop cultural routes where the community can share their resilience to living on the margins and experiencing more than a fair share of deprivation and sacrifice.
Transitions17 acts as a point of reference for sustainable work with community and artist relationships. Abboud is a Syrian refugee who has skills in editing from work done in his own country. He came to Transitions17 looking for an opportunity to volunteer and taking his skills into account Transitions17 has given him the opportunity to film parts of the project. Abboud can also use the equipment for his own needs and together we will develop a portfolio that will support his application to Film and Media studies at University.

I was born on Albion St in 1960, baptized at St Peters. Dad was a Roll Turner at Dorman Longs, left for Canada in 1963 because the writing was on the wall back then. Came back in 1984 to visit didn't look to bad but was declining badly. Sorry to see the way it is now.

Thank you Mark for sharing your story and highlighting your connection to South Bank Redcar and Cleveland. A lot of people left for other places like Australia and Canada, yet they still have a fond and compassionate memory of the area.
