    I am a new subscriber and since my first garden for 25 years are succulents, making my own soil mix is a blessing. I have been repotting my whole collection. Thank you

    That mix is very similar to mine. The only difference is that instead of perlite I use crushed lava Rock (volcanic stones) since I happened to find a lot of in my yard so I'm using it instead of perlite. A lot of people use crushed up bricks which I think I'm definitely gonna try out

      I love the idea of using crushed lava rock! Especially if it’s in your own yard! Perlite is lava rock that has been heated very high and it causes it to “puff” out. Creates good air flow AND it’s light weight.

    PLEASE: I bought a little aloe plant that barely fit in my hand. I watered and cared for it and it continued to grow n grow n grow way outside its teeny tiny cup. It looked like Medusa's head when i finally was able to repot it into 8 other pots. Now they are doing the same thing and I want to salvage the upside growing outshoots but not sure how to fix these so they are pretty, healthy, and sellable. TIPS?

    Thank you so much for this video. I desperately need to repot my desert roses and can’t find any potting mix anywhere. The desert roses where my mother-in-laws and my husband has worked to keep them alive for years now it is on me to do it and they need to be repotted.

    I have a large aloe Vera growing in me back yard often with lots of pups. I enjoy harvesting the pups and replanting them in pots for gifting to friends. My problem is in my clumsiness removing the pups, many come up with the roots broken off. Can you do a video showing how you can root these pups so I can repot them. I just thrown dozens like these away in the past. Thank you.

      I have been thinking I need to get back into making videos! I’ll make note of this! I would imagine adding some rooting hormone and putting in some cactus soil would do the trick.

    I didn’t like the sand I bought , so I just used 50/50 perlite and soil with another hand ful of soil .

    Is there a difference in using top soil or potting mix?

    • @ShookHomemade
      @ShookHomemade  4 года назад +5

      Yes! Top soil does not have the adequate drainage that potting mix has. When you’re dealing with cactus and succulents the key is DRAINAGE DRAINAGE DRAINAGE! the number 1 killer of succulents and cacti is root rot and that comes about by inadequate drainage and over watering! Thanks for the question!

    Hi! Did you say paper sand? And as far as the perlite, I can’t seem to find any in my lowes or home depot. Where could I find it?

    Could I use this for thyme and rosemary type herbs?

    • @ShookHomemade
      @ShookHomemade  Год назад +1

      For drought tolerant herbs I suppose you could by they may need more frequent watering

    Peat is very destructive to the environment :(, try peat free soil and your recipe will be perfect!

    • @ShookHomemade
      @ShookHomemade  3 года назад +1

      I have since gotten more away from peat and use more cococoir. :)
