The star you see is Cappella. Capella’s red and green flashes are coming from … not from the star itself … but from the refraction of its light by our atmosphere. When you see Capella higher in the sky, you’ll find that these glints of red and green will disappear. It is the 6th brightest star in the sky.
Ryan you were correct in telling Sophie to stop talking about things that go wrong, l travelled around Australia with my wife saying, gee we haven't seen any cattle on the road, next minute cows on the road, we haven't been stopped by train railway crossings, next minute we're sitting at a crossing from 20 min. I refused to answer when she said, we havent had a puncture yet. I was was silent for a while saying, do say that shit I'm talking about it. You brought back a memory that made me laugh. Safe travel.

I get the toilet paper between spice bottles. Trying to find and quiet all the creaking, tapping, rubbing sounds becomes a madman's "quest". Years into ownership still looking...
8:00 Sophie, Always lie down in the boat feet toward the bow, that way if you run into anything, you won't break your neck when the boat stops. Stay safe
Alone with my wife, in our house here in Vermont, sailing on the Corona Sea....cooking, fixing, cleaning....thanks for the change in scenery and this odd new form of socializing...
The double head sail rig is the easiest to set and douse but it is what is causing all of the horrible rolling and backing/filling of the sails that you have had this entire crossing. You would likely have a much better ride if you put up the main and one poled out genoa and maintain a heading of 160º apparent. The boat will also sail faster on that point of sail. In an ocean passage you would only need to jibe once or twice a day to stay near your rube line.
For what it’s worth (which is nothing more than a “like”) my favorite videos on RUclips are couples making passages in monohulls together which there isn’t very many of.
Would it be better for the sea state to sail off the wind. Rarely is VMG maximum heading dead down wind, sailing off to one side or other would maximize VMG. See if you can get polars for your boat at least that could guide decision making. As a racer I’m a little surprised you don’t unfurl the main sail or spinnaker/gennaker in lighter wind but that is the racer in me. The red/green/white “star” could be the mast head lights of another sailboat. When racing overnight that is how to keep track of competition and which tack they are on compared to you b/c all you can see at that point are mast head lights, when you’re not periodically lighting up the sail to check trim.
Another good episode Sophie, I think you are doing a great job about capturing the sort of rhythm of the days, 24hrs of operation on a boat. Stay healthy.
I look forward to your videos every day, locked down here in Miami, we are allowed to go to our boat but not allowed to leave the dock to go sailing. Thanks for your videos guys, stay safe!
Good luck... provisioning is also a multiple hours project for us. We haven’t done it in about 2 weeks, and we’re kind of dreading doing it this week 😶
@@RyanSophieSailing It was not bad. Our local discount grocery was not crowded. We got the essentials. We could have gotten 8 rolls of TP if we had needed it! We weren't able to get some of our regular items, but often there was a substitute. No baking stuff (yeast, flour, sugar), but we did get a corn bread mix (wanted corn meal). It would be a great time to get back into baking bread like Sofie. Thanks to all those working to keep us stocked. There has been a huge shift from eating out to eating at home all the time. It will take some time for things to re-balance.
Hah, noticed the orange harddrive. I use the same for backups, they can take the beating they are getting on a boat. Hope you are safe, we are stuck on our boat in Spain. Trying to wait this out....
All my most positive thoughts to you! We have friends in Spain and the situation seems to be tough for boaters. We are also stuck on the boat, and it’s not easy everyday. Trying to keeping a smile on our faces though, and pray that this too shall pass! 💜
Ryan & Sophie Sailing thanks. Yes, the situation in Spain is so bad. So many extra people die every day, and it seems the lockdown will continue, there is no real alternative. But we are still lucky, not many people in the marina so we are pretty much always a 100mts away from others. So perfect isolation at this time as marinas are closed and others are not allowed to enter. Stay safe.
Two comments: 1) listening with both pods in your ears prevents you from hearing the sound on the boat that alerts you before something really bad is going to happen, giving you the chance to stop it before it happens 2) Ryan: Be careful what you wish for. I once did a 1,600 mile passage with one crew member that, had we been able to get away with it, we would have thrown overboard.
A wallowing boat is no fun for me. I can relate. But it is part of sailing. My worst experience was being drunk and stuffed with food on a Chinese junk. That enormous stern really was affected by the muddled sea state. Did manage to hold things together.
Reminds me of the insurance advert when the guy comes home in the dark with a woman he has just met. They switch the light on and the place is a mess. She says "Oh no, your place has been ransacked", he then reluctantly agrees, she then starts calling the insurance company, while he remembers how untidy he left it. But Polar Seal looks so clean and tidy in port. Now for untidy, try The Adventures of an Old Sea dog.
I have noticed a pulsating red and green star also. Can't remember when or where but it was very distinct. Web search indicates possibly the star Capella.
It isn't Capella as that would be in the North and they were looking E/SE. It is the junction of Saturn and Jupiter. They were right over top of one another at that time and location and they are quite bright anyway. Anything close to the horizon gets a lot more atmosphere and therefore seems to vary in brightness. Sophie/Ryan, download Star Tracker or some such for your iPhone next time you do a long passage. You can simply point your phone at it and it will show you all the stars and planets in that direction.
@@steveburton5825 Do you mean occultation? Conjunction is easily recognisable because you can still see the two bodies close to each other. If you meant occultation of Jupiter by Saturn or vice versa, unfortunately you will need to wait until 07/12/11633 !
You both wear your PFD's at all times when on deck. Kudos! What model are you using and how comfortable are they? I tend to switch to either a tether or a waist "fanny pack" to avoid the sweatiness and neck pressure of our older PFD's (weighted down with PLB, light, knife etc.....)

I realize you were tired but its a little disappointing you did not enjoy the crossing more. perhaps the stress of worrying about the boat kept Ryan on edge? .One trick you can do if its calm(which I don't think you had) is to motor at just above idle , its surprising how fast the boat will go for very little fuel...…. Hmm maybe I should be asking what RPM you run at?& what fuel economy you expect?cheers warren.
It's type 2 fun Warren! Double-handing an Atlantic crossing is like running a marathon. There are times that are fun, and other times that are REALLY not fun, but it doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable or that we didn't enjoy it :)
You're coming closer... Tell me: Which and how many solid objects did you see while crossing? E.g. ships + boats in sight and on radar, fishes, birds...?
What is the small flag you're flying on the starboard side? I know you typically use the flag of the country you are at there, but you're in the middle of the Atlantic now.
I think that the next time that you buy your provisions you should buy less meat and spend the rest of your budget on Pringles. Because the present quota is not doing it for Ryan :)
'Thanks for the food Ryan!', . . . , Ryan, 'Yep'. No. Sorry. We do not answer this way . . . 'You're welcome dear', or, 'You like it?', or, 'This is only the beginning of my culinary skills!', or, blow a kiss . . . , and Ryan, please, observe your woman when she takes a shower . . . , and respond to her when she comes to you after she finishes . . .
Always amazes me how much sailors hate sailing. What's wrong with using the main in low wind and crawling along instead of using the engines. You don't always have to point at the finish line, the ocean is a big place and doesn't have tracks. Also a little main sail will totally stabalise the boat with a little wind.
ISS moves quite quickly across the sky and I don't believe that any external lights come into play, i.e. when it is visible to the naked eye, it's due to it being in sunlight while the earth's surface is dark. Cheers from isolation in Ottawa, where currently clear skies should mean the ISS will be visible fairle low on the horizon for a few minutes tonight, 06 April.
@@RyanSophieSailing Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, it wasn't so much a criticism as a gentle dig. If you were in heavily trafficked waters I'm sure you would be more vigilant. Red light should be used at night. Perhaps jibing downwind would have kept the sails from flogging. After all, the main sail is your best sail.
The double head sail rig is the easiest to set and douse but it is what is causing all of the horrible rolling and backing/filling of the sails that you have had this entire crossing. Backfills from wind shifts, but most the time the banging was due to too light air. More tho come on this soon
Feels harmonious finally. Great

There are bianary planets that seem to flash and wobble as they orbit each other. Or it could be Uranus.....heh

You take what you get!!!
It's a binary star. Two stars rotating around each other.
If the star is low to the horizon perhaps you are seeing a refraction which is accompanied by a prismatic effect.
