    I've not seen anyone do quarter sawing with so little waste and still made it look so easy. I went to school in Memphis to become a lumber grader. I have seen many butchered logs by sawers who thought they knew what they were doing but destroyed countless logs and wasted $1000.00s. You have clearly done this before. Grate job and excellent demo.

    There's a lot of vids on the puter saying they are quarter sawing a log the right way, I've even had a few arguments with them on what is the "right" way, but their "way" turned out a lot of rift sawn that they called quarter sawn. You have shown the RIGHT WAY in this vid! It's the way I do it on my sawmill too. Thanks for posting the right way! SR

So far all the other folks made it so complicated sounding my old brain couldn't grasp it. Had to sell my saw a while back due to ageing,this makes me wish I had another one. Not to be,too old

      This is the only way you CAN really do it on a circular mill without flipping the quarters.
      On a horizontal band mill you can set your blade the desired thickness off the deck and make cuts on alternating faces with better results.

  • @Rose-f2t
    @Rose-f2t Год назад +1

    Andruw, nice and clear log you had on the mill.
    Your method of 1/4 sawing this log yielded 24 boards of different widths, however, each of those boards you had to square the inside edge. Therefore, if your boards were one inch thick then you wasted a 12 inch wide board.
    Figure: each board is 1 inch thick and at a 45 degree edge, so 2 boards makes a 1 x 1, and 24 divide by 2 is 12, obviously.
    In my opinion a horizontal band sawmill or a swing-blade sawmill do better in 1/4 sawing.
    With the horizontal band sawmill, you would set all 4 quarters on the bed and cut your lumber from the bottom. Then rotating 90 degrees for each cut.
    For the size of your log, it would be a total of 6 cuts, because each cut you would be cutting 4 boards 🙂

    • @AndruwsLumber
      @AndruwsLumber  Год назад +1

      A band mill would help. But. This order in particular wanted the circle mark that a band mill cannot provide.

    • @Rose-f2t
      @Rose-f2t Год назад +1

      @@AndruwsLumber I see, and I take your word for it. 🙂

    • @tomnovak7731
      @tomnovak7731 Год назад +1

      @@Rose-f2t I have made this exact comment. I was hoping for better results, but this method was only better by having to only flip each quarter once.
      The response he gave you was the lamest I've heard in a long time! If they're wanting quarter sawn, it's not for the bad set marks off the saw!

    • @Rose-f2t
      @Rose-f2t Год назад

      @@tomnovak7731 I agree with the lame answer.
      He can do a better job by setting the quartered log flat on the bed and make a cut, then rotate the log 90 degrees check for parallelism with the saw and make another cut, and so on.
      But that was too much work, I suppose 🙂

    • @phildo39645

    I've not seen that method of quarter sawing on a circle mills. Usually circle mills don't bother with quarter sawing as it is a lot harder to do than with other sawmills. I always thought quarter sawn lumber is any lumber which the growth rings are perpendicular to the wide face of the board. There is more than one way to saw boards to produce that. It's just that some methods are easier than others and some produce more quarter sawn lumber. Merry Christmas to you and your sawing crew.

      @tomnovak7731 Год назад

      @bwillan I think he got as much rift sawn as the next guy. There were only about 3, maybe 4, boards per quarter that were truly quarter sawn.
      I was hoping for something more with the video title, but it was less impressive than some I've seen.
      It was simpler, but not more effective.

    • @johncarlola
      @johncarlola Год назад +1

      @@tomnovak7731 The point is the term "quarter sawn" refers to cutting a log into quarters, then slicing it up. there may be better ways to get cross grain boards, but they aren't quarter sawn. Just like plain cut logs aren't cathedral sawn.
