Good info! I've often wondered about the kamidana in our dojo. I had a vague idea of what it was but really enjoyed hearing the details from your video. Thanks!
Inside is the spirits of the past teachers? Inside the shrine model on a Kamidana is where the Ofuda is placed. I've never heard of an Ofuda that represented a past teacher of a dojo. The Ofuda normally represents the Kami-sama that is the patron Kami of the the dojo or home in which it resides. My home kamidana has Ofuda for Amaterasu Omikami and Inari Okami.
I have a similar shelf, we call it an alter, and on it i have both Hindu diety, Buddhist, and Chinese diety as well as some statues of some popular hindu Acharya and saints.❤i am interested in getting this Japanese "Altar" or' Shelf ". ..for Japanese diety.🙏
Yu said its not religious at all, i assume you mean yurs specifically, cuz some people have videos where there Kamidana is very much religious/spiritual, being a home of the Gods🙏...but yes I see it can also be uses in a secular way . I think not only would i have one for Diety worship, but also to honour the Islamic Imams, of the household of the Proohet Muhammad, not in a religious way , but in a way that honors them for there values of putting God first, which is a message not just for Muslim, but jews, Hindus, Christian,Yazidiz, Sikhs, and i guess Shinto followers too😅
Here's something you may not know if you have ever been to Japan: That "replace each year" stuff is so that priests in Japan can make more money each year. It has nothing to do with Kami respect. Most dojos do not follow that rigmarole. In fact, none that I know of in the states. If you have your own Kamidana, feel free do it your own way.

Yes. It's just a symbol, so we add them in there. It is the spiritual respect that counts.

Western interpretation of an Eastern religious institution.
Quite disrespectful to the kami not to replace them every year.
