Jenny has been one of my favourite artists right from the early Frug days of Rilo Kiley. An unbelievably talented songwriter, singer and stage presence. Thanks for this Justin!
Lately, my six year old son and I listen to Permission to Land together in the car… At a pub a couple weeks ago, a man was taking requests to play instrumentally on organ - plenty of classic rock tunes in his oeuvre - my little one walked right up to him The organist asked my kid “What would you like to hear?” “Can you play ‘Givin up givin up givin a fuck?!’“ my little one replied with enthusiasm I was so proud
First time hearing Jenny Lewis. Where have I been? Thank you for sharing X What a beautiful song. I’ll be listening to Jenny on my travels next week. PS - The Show Must Go On gives me shivers X
Writer by Paolo Nutini makes me shiver every time I listen to it. It's like a song about my marriage to my Ex. The false ending completely sums up our relationship. We have children together. It will never end. It's a song worth checking out. Brilliantly written. 🦋
Great Justin thanks for highlighting Jenny Lewis reminds me alot of the Swedish duo First Aid Kit their music gives me the shiver factor specially live. Have been checking out Jennys albums she is awesome.
One of the greatest moments in my life was when I saw her live in 2014 and I was in the front row and after she finished her song during the encore, she got on one knee, kissed my hand and walked off the stage. I'll never top that. ❤
Your channel has officially become my FAVORITE RUclips channel. I can’t get through the day without hearing your dry sense of humor…I friggin love you brother!! You have an amazing ear for music and are not scared to say what you think about a band or their music, I find that SO refreshing. Thanks for being real my brother!!! The Darkness RULES!!!
This made me smile. Great song. I shiver a bit when I hear Joan Armatrading sing "the Weakness in Me" and Linda Ronstadt sing songs off "Canciones Mi Padre." Also "Acadian Driftwood" by The Band... so many songs make me shiver and shake.
So very many song make me shiver and several make me cry. But you, kind sir, make me laugh. Thanks. Been through many decades of music and always up for learning about more. You're teaching me about rock and son in law is teaching me about jazz . Grew up on country....the good country. I'm perpetually working on learning mandolin. Rock on Justin and enjoy your young self.
I hadn’t heard of Jenny, but I have had this song stuck in my head ever since seeing this on your channel. Love a story telling song, and so catchy. This kind of writing reminds me of Jewel, so of course I’ve had to dig into my collection of her stuff now. She’s brilliant too, and her songs make me feel so much. Particularly ‘Goodbye Alice in Wonderland’ and an abundance of others from various albums.
What makes it a great song is the fact that a child can hear something in it without fully understanding the lyrics, plus it being a shared experience between her and her dad makes it a touchstone of her life for eternity that will evolve and make more sense as the years go by, That's a spectacularly beautiful thing. And as for songs that make you shiver, the show must go on by queen has to be one of those, that second chorus key change gets me everytime.
Very nice video today, I didn't know about Jenny Lewis. Sounds good! Thanks for sharing with us that personal moment with your daughter. You both are very lucky (she for having a dad like you, and you for having a daughter with such a good taste in music, among surely many other goodnesses)🥰
Never heard this before and I love it! Have heard about Jenny forever but my alt radio stations never played her. So strange because this fits into so many 90’s songs that did. Thanks again Justin for introducing me to so much great music. Your daughter has great taste too!
Holy moly! Thanks for introducing me to this - I'm terribly short of female artists in my general listening and Jenny has grabbed me firmly by the heartstrings and plucked me from this void. Chwarae teg, Mister Hawkins, with your easily humorous, intelligent and knowledgeable delivery, you may just, if you pursue a SYSLT series as part of your online missive, save music. Especially if you get yourself both a Rickenbacker 12-string and a Telecaster.
The live version of Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney always gives me the shivers. You can hear the love and passion he had for his wife in that song. Especially towards the end when he has that incredible grate on his voice and it sounds like he's about to break. Be still my heart!
@@stephenmarsh3986 yes, that's a GREAT album! Another one I forgot is Down In The Valley by Otis Redding. Every time I hear it I just have to stop what I'm doing and clutch my chest. It absolutely moves me ❤️
the one song that makes me feel everything depending on what mood i’m in/ what i want to feel is ‘39 by Queen, Brian May’s vocals are just superb and i love the way his voice strains to hit the notes, unlike Freddie where it’s just so natural and powerful, so the emotion and strain in his voice makes me shiver along with the beautiful instrumentals
Songs that make you shiver sounds like a good new playlist. I definitely have too many to remember, but one of them would be Pavarotti's version of Nessun Dorma. Off the top of my head I'd also add Ultraviolet by U2 Bachelorette by Björk, By my side by INXS, A Night Like This by The Cure and You Know Me Too Well by Nothing But Thieves. Oh, and of course, from the Darkness' repertoire, I'd add Heart Explodes. Just added Jenny Lewis to my Spotify. Nice one.
Thanks so much for this Justin! I've been a fan of Jenny's since the early Rilo days. This is by far my favorite song she's ever written. I've been lucky enough to see her perform it live. And It only elevated the song for me. She's one of those rare artists whose live vocals truly rival her recorded voice. This song definitely makes me shiver!! But others include Since I've Been Loving You- LZ, Silver Springs- FMac.. Other Jenny songs that makes me shiver are Little White Dove, and A Man, Me, Then Jim ❤️
Justin, I was wondering if you were aware of Sharon van Etton? A fairly recent discovery for me and in a similar alt rock, amazing singer and songwriter vein to Jenny Lewis. If not, I recommend "Seventeen" (a truly heartbreaking song that always makes me shiver) or Mistakes (a newer track, also excellent). Cheers!
Had to smile when you talked about singing this with your daughter without her really understanding the implications of the lyrics. My mom loved the Starland Vocal Band "Afternoon Delight" back in the '70's and my little brother and I would sing along in the backseat of the car without a clue as to what it was really about. It wasn't until Anchorman came out I had to laugh to myself recalling the innocence of 4 and 8 years olds singing about a little mid afternoon sexy time. 😁
I love that you covered this song and learned something new regarding the fear of it being too personal of a story. That's what draws me to Jenny Lewis' songs, though - the lyrics are so personal, usually very specific, yet totally relatable and remind me of a specific story in my own past. Her voice is absolutely heavenly, too. I listen to her with my children as well, and my four-year-old daughter rated her voice "a 10 out of 10." I also totally agree this is perfect car music. We drive together and belt out her melodic lines in unison. A few songs that give me the chills: Well I Wonder by The Smiths, So Far Away by Dire Straits, and of course Growing On Me by The Darkness! Thanks for making my Sunday. Love you, Justin, and always look forward to your videos. 💕
Thanks for the reminder of such a great song Justin! It is itself a song that makes me shiver- and one of the finest examples of storytelling in a song. Looks like Jenny has new stuff coming out this year too- hurrah!
Fantastic episode! Listening back to this song I’m hearing Jet Boy Jet Girl (woo ooo!) by Elton Motello, and a touch of Magic Man by Heart - in those minor chords, and even Bobby Gentry vibes in that the lyrics make you do a think. Definition of a consummate artist. Fire shirt!
My daughter and I sang Free Fallin and Learning to Fly at the Tom Petty concert when she was only 10. I swear I would have been fine if I died right after 😢
One of my old bands opened up for Jenny Lewis at a big outdoor venue in Omaha, NE some time around 2010 I think. (those days are a bit hazy) We drove 11 hours from Chicago that day to play the gig. She put on a fantastic show, super solid and enjoyable.
The line from Wheat Kings by the Tragically Hip "A nation whispers, we always knew he'd go free" gives me the shivers. Thanks for introducing me to so much music I might have missed, Justin,

Father/daughter bonding over music is so freaking wholesome. I love this! I always associate Creedence Clearwater Revival with my dad. Good times. :) 6:15 songs that make me "shiver" ...umm, "Big Ideas" by Radiohead, the pre-"In Rainbows" version of what was later named "Nude."

I like her work with Rilo Kiley; "The Frug" is pop perfection. Also, she had a big role as a child in "classic" 80s video game movie "The Wizard" with Fred Savage.
Comment’s day question: What’s the most recent lyric you’ve realized you’ve gotten wrong and/or never knew the majority of your life? Example: “What you doin' on your bed on your back?” You Should Be Dancing by The Bee Gees?
In my opinion, one of the most talented lyricists in the business. And that's from the beginning, even Rilo Kiley's first album had great lyrics. She's got good words.
I love the clarity of her vocals and she’s a clever lyricist. It’s funny you mentioned The Smiths because that line is exactly what I think of too. Neko Case is another one worth investigating. They’ve often played together. Get both. You know I love jangly guitars.😊
Interesting! Jenny Lewis is not a name I hear too often, and she hasn't been on my own radar a lot either, but I had to think of the song 'Rise Up With Fists' she did together with The Watson Twins, only recently. During the latest Maroon 5 video on this channel, actually! 😀 Because their guitarist was also in Jenny's backing band then! 😄
Lovely tune, yes. One that makes ME shiver would be 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'.. To my mind, the Ricky 12 strings have a bit of a weird high action for the right hand, but maybe that's just me. Justin, you are the 1st person I have ever heard pronounce Telecaster Tele CASTER as opposed to TELE caster.. Cool! Nice one Justin. Hoping inspiration flowing nicely. 🎶🌟👍
'In A Broken Dream' by Python Lee Jackson gives me shivers again and again. Straight in with a funky beat and bass line with a distant guitar, then a bang on a few piano keys before the Hammond on the right channel comes along with that distant guitar coming right up and ripping a solo. A quick stop before Rod comes in with his fractured, gravelly up close vocal. It's textbook, it's pure heaven. (And yes get a 12 string Ricky AND a Tele!)
There's so many but the first that comes to mind is the guitar intro from 'From your favourite sky' by I am Kloot. Gonna have to go digging through Spotify now for the others...
Goose bumps a plenty with lots of songs but recently any QOTSA with a raspy Josh Homme guitar section - specifically Smooth Sailing - Justin as always you make my day and love your commitment to do this in tandem with all your other commitments ❤
The song that makes me shiver? "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" by Robbie Robertson. "She said, you like it now, but you'll learn to love it later." He could have been singing the recipe for chocolate chip cookies in that voice, and it would still give me shivers.
I have a Rickenbacker 370/12, run through a Vox AC30 and a Fender Bassman. I use a compression pedal and a conservative amount of chorus to get that McGuinn-esque “jangle”. So very worth the money. Go with the Rickenbacker 12 string!
Joydrop - beautiful, nightwish - ghost love score, bjork - play dead, chvrhes - the mother we share, arch enemy - we will rise, rush - losing it, there are so many that make me shiver, often for quite different reasons..
Jenny has been one of my favourite artists right from the early Frug days of Rilo Kiley. An unbelievably talented songwriter, singer and stage presence. Thanks for this Justin!
Watching her perform Acid Tongue live gets me every time. Hairs stand.

I love the clarity of her vocals and she’s a clever lyricist. It’s funny you mentioned The Smiths because that line is exactly what I think of too.
Neko Case is another one worth investigating. They’ve often played together.
Get both. You know I love jangly guitars.😊
Starry, starry night by Don Mclean always gives me shivers. Such beautiful meloncholy.
Sebadoh!!! I haven't heard that name in ages!
Really a nice break down. Benmont really adds a Petty-esque feel. Ok, gotta pitch you writing with my kid. He’s 20 but I think it could work. . 😊
Hazel eyes - the darkness and don’t wanna miss a thing - Aerosmith always gives me the shivers cos they both hold different meanings to me.
Chris Rea’s “Windy Town” gives me the shivers every time with “East coast crosswind on the cold wet stone” so evocative.
Love the channel, Justin. My shiver song is “Let Me See The Light” by the late great Mike Finnigan!
Smooth Sailing by QOTSA is one sexy ass song.
The song that makes me shiver? "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" by Robbie Robertson.
"She said, you like it now, but you'll learn to love it later."
He could have been singing the recipe for chocolate chip cookies in that voice, and it would still give me shivers.
Harry Nilsson - without you- always gets me!
