I can understand Hilda emphasising that her daughter was flying into Manchester. It wasn't really until the 1980s that air travel stopped being the prerogative of those better off and accessible to most. Naturally, the change probably started in the '70s, but it was still a major event if someone travelled to a destination on another continent towards the end of the eighties in many communities. These days we take air travel for granted and don't bat an eyelid and it is easy to forget how extraordinary and special a thing it was for people like Hilda Ogden and millions like her back in 1969.

Thanks again as always, fab episode. Elsie is playing it so cool with Alan, even with others when his name mentioned, atmosphere is icy beyond belief !!! I don't blame Alan for leaving her and Len to it in The Rovers. Amused when Elsie told Hilda that she didn't think Irma was coming to England by kangaroo, this was after Hikda said she was flying in. Nice to see Irma, loved the singing in The Rovers. Alot of wise words from Ena throughout. Annie is barking up the wrong tree with Hilda over the necklace, I know who the culprit is.

My late best friend worked with Violet Carson in the 70's, my friend said Violet was one of the loviest, nicest people you could ever work with. I loved the character, Ena had a heart of gold, she truly cared for her neighbours and spoke the truth, even if her neighbours didnt like what she said, she was truthful, i believe she wore three hairnets, because by doing that it showed up on tv better.
