This video features a box of Half Dollars ($500) and a box of Dollar Coins ($1000). You may be asking yourself "why are we still producing dollar coins?" or maybe more importantly "what are the different types of modern dollar coins we are minting?"
The United States has a history of issuing various dollar coins, each with its own design and characteristics. Here are some key points about U.S. dollar coins:
Susan B. Anthony Dollar (1979-1981, 1999): The Susan B. Anthony dollar was the first modern small-sized dollar coin. It features the image of women's suffrage advocate Susan B. Anthony. However, it was not widely accepted in circulation, and its production was discontinued in 1981. A small number were minted again in 1999 for collectors.
Sacagawea Dollar (2000-present): The Sacagawea dollar, introduced in the year 2000, honors the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, who played a crucial role as a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The coin features a portrait of Sacagawea with her infant son, Jean Baptiste. The reverse side often showcases various Native American themes. In 2009, a series of rotating designs highlighting different aspects of Native American culture was introduced.
Presidential Dollar Series (2007-2016): This series honored U.S. Presidents with a new design released in the order of their presidencies. The obverse of each coin features a portrait of the president, while the reverse showcases iconic symbols and images related to the president's life and work.
Native American $1 Coin Program (2009-present): Running concurrently with the Presidential Dollar Series, this program features a yearly changing reverse design highlighting the contributions of Native Americans to U.S. history and culture. The obverse continues to feature Sacagawea.
Innovation Dollar Series (2018-2032): This ongoing series honors innovation and innovators with a design theme that changes annually. The reverse side features a representation of an innovation or innovator.
Dollar coins are not as commonly used in everyday transactions as one-dollar bills, but they are still produced for collectors and certain specific purposes. The U.S. Mint continues to explore new designs and concepts for dollar coins, reflecting the rich history and diversity of the United States.
