Jack Elderton and Cal Goodall break down Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham in the Premier League at Villa Park, a game where injuries stopped Graham Potter and Unai Emery from picking their strongest sides. Despite this, an early Jacob Ramsey goal and missing a plethora of attacking talent, the Hammers fought back and controlled the game with Emerson Palmieri scoring a header in the 70th minute to equalise. Jack and Cal discuss all this, as well as West Ham's competitive spirit returning, Lucas Paqueta's role as a 9 leading the line, the improvement defensively under Potter compared to Julen Lopetegui, the important of adaptability, players strengths being emphasised, the effect Tyrone Mings' injury had on the game and much more.

A back three of Todibo, Kilman, & Aguerd appeals to me under Potter.
Aguerd with Scarles supporting him in his wingback role would be really solid. Aguerd has excellent recovery nullifying the counter attack, but it's his covering in a defensive block that seemed to expose a lack of concentration. Scarles is excellent at positioning and breaking up attacks, that would really help Aguerd, I think.
@@512SquaredI think under Moyes he was forced to defend so much that concentration lapses were inevitable. I’d like to see how he’d got on when he’s under less constant pressure. I think he’d perform better if we consistently had 45-55% possession rather than 20-30%. 😂

And to the rest of the Premier League! Tobido is slow and crap in the air and Aguerd is too weak for the Premier League.
I enjoyed this video very much Thanks Jack and Cal, Potter is a breath of fresh air and Paqueta is blossoming and it’s so exciting to see him grow in confidence. Potter has already boosted morale and team spirit and seeing the team enjoying their football has lifted the fan base tremendously. That draw against Villa felt like a win. Sky Sports presenters said that they’d never seen such a defensive West Ham line up but we still played some very good attacking football. I feel much happier this week. I wanted Scarles and Casey to start but Emerson scored and I thought Cresswell played really well. Forgive my love of Cresswell, I’m old and sentimental and glad for him to get a game. Scarles was excellent when he came on. He’s good enough to start and that’s a really positive change. Alvarez has had criticism lately but he took a while to get over his injury and he obviously loves Potter. The dance with Emerson after our goal showed his delight and I hope he continues to improve and stays. Kilman is looking better as well. I’ll shut up now. Thanks again guys.

Great pod lads, really enjoyable listen! The discussion on some of the differences between Lopetegui and Potter was very interesting and I think it really highlights the difference between a “manager” and a “head coach”.
Managers (Moyes, Lopetegui etc.) are more old fashioned and generally will have just one main tactic and if the players don’t suit that system, then the whole team suffers. Whereas head coaches are way more flexible & adaptable and their system is very much dependent on the players they have and playing to their strengths. Which is what we are now seeing under Potter. There’s been an immediate upturn in performances from every single player and that’s not a coincidence. Every player is now playing to their strengths in a system that suits them, rather than being shoehorned into a system that doesn’t with no clear instructions like they were under Lopetegui.
Makes me question even more why we went for another “manager” in the summer when we had a DoF primarily in charge of making the signings. But that’s a discussion for another day!
Also, quick note: agree 100% on everything said about Aguerd.
I don't entirely agree. Moyes is known in the game for strategically setting up for the players he has, though he plays the percentages more than Potter, so that can make for more defense first and counter attacking rather trying to play through the opposition like Potter encourages players to do.
I think West Ham's low block under Moyes was partly because the renewed defense wasn't good enough. Kilman and AWB in a Moyes team would probably also have resulted in more attacking and possession football.
It is kind of sad how happy I am about a draw. 😅 But that is what a strong, good to the eye performance does. The style, philosophy, shape, ideas we are showing has increased our ceiling which excites me.

Jack & Cal, really enjoying the pod today. Thanks to you and Cal for some really insightful commentary. I did just wonder, Jack, whether your mike can be adjusted to deliver a sharper sound. I'm definitely hard of hearing so its as much my problem. But Cal's voice transmits better for me....
Harsh on Coufal’s historic play. He’s one of the few of our numerous back line players that was often looking for the right short pass but seldom had the options
Amazing to see Coufal overlapping with AWB to create overloads on the right! I know overloads down the flank are not a radical new tactic but how long is it since we've done that with purpose and consistently? Coufal has struggled at times over the last few years but the guy is a warrior and always gives 100%. Perhaps a new lease of life under Potter? From Jack's comments did I get a sense that Coufal is keen to learn under Potter and develop his game?
@@MaximumResultsCopy My problem with coufal has never been his forward play (minus some niggles with the odd shit cross). However, defensively he is really quite poor. He reads the game slowly, he is slow and he dives in and leaves himself and others (Usually the much beleaguered Mavrapanos) in a shit position.
@@MrCrispy941agree love his attitude but as a top prem defender he is past his best , always will appreciate what he has brought to the club but it's clear to see time to say goodbye no animosity much love, but bye bye all the same.

Thinking that Moyes played Paqueta in a way that too often exposed his weaknesses, just like you said, that in a false nine, this weaknesses actually become strengths. Potter seems to have an excellent grasp of how to balance the team tactics to exploit the strengths of the players and minimise the effects of the weaknesses.
I also noticed how much Paqueta's English has come on. A sign that he's likely feeling quite settled in London too 🎉
Aguerd would thrive under potter ball. We should look to get him back.
Agree...would be very interesting to see what Aguerd could do with Potter in charge. Similarly with our other "forgotten" men...JWP and Cornet. The club has spent a lot of money on these players...worth seeing what Potter can make of them. Unlikely, I know, but Cornet as a Frimpong-type wing back? I know he doesn't seem to understand the offside rule 😀
@MaximumResultsCopy aguerd left side CB and todibo right side with Kilman in the middle, Emerson would be right side and Emerson left. Not sure jwp or cornet will get a look in to be honest.

On the issue of playing the young players...we need to remember this was a tough game for us and I think with all the injuries Potter decided he needed the experienced players to "tough it out". Remember, this was only Potter's fourth game (third league game)...I know it seems longer! We are not completely out of relegation trouble just yet and some hard games ahead. When we are well over the 30 point mark we will have more breathing space and Potter will have more chances to play the youngsters. We still have 15 games left so plenty of time. Like most Hammers I'm finding Potter an amazing breath of fresh air! Extraordinary the change in mood in such a short time and the players seem transformed.
Potter should work on getting Bowen playing on the left. That way when paq is number 9 Bowen and Kudus can both play either on left or right
I loved when we were playing all 3 previously and they'd switch during matches. Think this could be really, really good under Potter. - Charlie
Regarding blockers: there needs to be a rule change that deliberately impeding an opponent when not challenging for the ball is an offence. Blocking and holding off the ball would be instantly stopped. It’s a deliberate foul.
100%. I get it at corners, although even then sometimes it's ridiculous, but outside the box especially it's just a foul. - Charlie

Re: Aguerd, he’s not going to want to come back. He wanted out before we wanted him out. I’d have him back but I can’t see it, especially if his price tag is strong.

I think it looks like the best football since Harry Redknapp was manager, but with a stronger, more sustainable feel to it - none of Harry’s dodgy transfers! Before that, I think you have to go back to Lyall until about ‘87, when the squad aged out &Cottee left.
