Fun Fact: By the time of his recording of this video One Piece was indeed ranked 3rd. However at this point the story has roughly 250 more chapters and has already surpassed Batman in Lifetime Sales (and considering that by his estimation it would have taken a decade for him to accomplish that, I think that's badass)

You’re right, although it may not seem like it now, we live in a time where one of the greatest works of fiction is being produced and we are extremely fortunate. Manga isn’t like American comic books, where they can just hire new artists and writers to produce a new storyline, once Oda is done/gone the series will end. Future readers will read the series and probably wonder what it was like to read each chapter week by week, and they will never experience it the way we are now-they wont have readers around the world coming together each week to share their excitement, theories, and thoughts with one another, as well as interactions w/ Oda himself via SBSs.

I began watching in 2001 back around the time the Arabasta arc was beginning. I binged all, walked away, binged all, walked away at least a few times. The last episode I watched was when they arrived on Zhou. Now that Luffy has reached a new level, I have to binge again.
One thing I noticed that was kind of neat was in the beginning Luffy took down bosses easy, but as they progressed, it became harder and margins slimmer. The bosses were stronger but Luffy didn’t change much getting only a little stronger along the way, with his gears being the biggest improvements. His defeat of Lucci was practically luck. Then on Sabaody, they experienced a defeat that was absolute and overwhelming. If it weren’t for Kuma, they’d be in prison or dead. Luffy finally realized, with a little prompting, that he needed to truly train again if he was serious about continuing. The return after the time skip was awesome. And the first big battle, when he knocked out 50,000 fishmen with a look was iconic. The Straw Hat pirates were back, and formidable.
Didn’t mean to go off on a tangent, but I did.

Considering the constraints and difficulties that the production team faced, I'm actually just in awe that they managed to produce something of such quality.
There's things they need to iron out, and while the change in syrup village was a nice touch, there's many elements that need changing, and Sanji's motivation is a lot more fleshed out even in the anime, but given their time constraints, and limit of 8 episodes, I actually can't believe they managed to pull through with such a good show 😂.

The Live action was amazing, and while there were weaknesses, what they managed to pull off make those weaknesses seem insignificant. I can't believe they actually managed to capture the spirit of One Piece in a live action show.
The anime does suffer from showing signs of aging, because animation has improved so much since then, and the social landscape and tropes within anime has shifted somewhat, that also means that if you're not familiar with the tropes and storytelling devices back then, you might not appreciate it as much, but every old fan should be probably be watching the older anime episodes with rose tinted glasses due to nostalgia etc. But when the nostalgia wears off and you already know the story, there is indeed little point in lingering in the old episodes. But I heard it was getting a remastered version? Or is that some propaganda or smth like that?

Then after at that point cramming all of the big hitters and must watches in my so far 10yrs of anime watching. 5 years ago I endeavoured to conquer this mountain.
And by God was I wrong. And am glad I was proven wrong.
Simply put the way I watched was binging 500 eps and burning myself out. Don't do this.
What I suggest is to watch one or two arcs at a time. Use the episode arc guide.
5yrs of watching and I'm on ep 850. With large swathes of time off.
It is a world I can delve right back into whenever I feel like it.

Thing is "bro you're wearing a diaper" is the exact point. The epitome/strongest "masculine ego" makes what you wear irrelevant.
Also giving extra meaning to the name "senor pink" plenty of men with "weak" masculine ego's/identities are afraid of the color pink/don't want to wear it. Yet if you imagine the most manly person you can think of walking in the streets wearing a pink tutu he's not even an inch less manly. For example say The Rock walks out on the street in a girly pink dress, he's still the rock, he's still a guy capable of probably ending you in a single punch. And he's still someone who wouldn't even care if everybody laughed at him for it.
Senor Pink is a sort of epitome of manliness and a symbol against prejudice based on appearance.
Oden once again repeats the same sentiment with his actions.

The Live Action series just came out, and I predict a massive spike as people who liked the LA version decide to check out the source. The Man of Steel fears the funny rubber monkey.
Now here's a couple fun facts:
One Piece is a weekly series that's done by basically just one guy. The man, the myth, the legend, Eichiro GOda. He *does* have assistants, but they mostly only ever do backgrounds or small inconsequential stuff. Barring health problems, he only takes 1 week off every 3 weeks.
Now here's the kicker. Remember I said he pumps out a chapter just about every week. He does it the old fashioned way. *Ye olde pen on paper.*

I think the true miracle of One Piece is that Eichiro Oda basically walked in and went "Hey, so I have a plan for a story that'll span 3 decades" and not only did Jump take him on, but (for the most part) none of the editors got in his way and he's been able to tell that story how he envisioned it.
If you're not familiar with publishing, and specifically publishing for a big manga company like Jump, that degree of creative freedom is exceptionally rare. ESPECIALLY as a series like this grows bigger, there's increasing demands from the publisher and editors to stay within the mold, keep doing what was already successful, and basically stall out. The fact that (as of 2023) we can look forward and see the ending on the horizon, and look back and see every step along the way to get here, and how none of it was "filler" or "fluff" - how every island, every villain, every arc was relevant to the overall journey.
I'd highly recommend the manga Bakuman, which is a peek behind the curtains in the form of a pseudo-autobiography by the writer and artist duo behind Death Note. Some of the compromises the artists are forced to make and the expectations they're forced to meet just to stay published is quite heartbreaking sometimes.

Aye, but who's caught up to chapter 1091 that came out yesterday? Haha.
One Piece is right up there with Batman for me as top favorite comics. But hey, now that you've watched this you can't not watch "The Breathtaking World of One Piece" by Strawhat V!

My man is watching this video that looks at a series of over 800 chapters when it's 1092 chapters long.
Also, it outsold almost every western comic ever. For single-author volumes, it's not even close. One Piece takes the cake by a massive mile.

Sir, I love your content, and I love One Piece! I am THRILLED you did this reaction video! Goodness I feel old and I'm only 32, TOONAMI was something I watched and in 1997 when it released I was only 6 years old! By time I was a young preteen/teen it was on TOONAMI/CT Network. I loved every minute and (several years later) it became my Netflix binge when I found they dropped the series on there!
This made my day! Monkey D. Luffy is THE MAN! My favorite character is Roronoa Zoro, but Luffy is the man with the stretchy plan! They made something brilliant in this show. And I only thought I'd love the DragonBall series. My heart had to make room!
One Piece introduced me to Inuyasha, Yuyu Hakusho, Ruruoni Kenshin etc! Love this stuff! We all need some silly fun sometimes! Take care! 🖖

I started one piece in 2000 :V so dont ask me , if you gonna start it just go from episode one ... I rewatched it 3 times , first one was episode 1 - impel dawn , then again episode 1 -shabody islands and then episode 1- dressrosa , to realize all the details and secret easter eggs ... There are a lot of easter eggs in the story and little visuals ... It's a mesmerizing world and a nice sunday practice for 23 years...

i love One Piece, the world building, the forshadowing, all the characters good and bad, all come together to make the world of One Piece feel lived in. I also believe this is our modern day Tale of Gilgamesh, Tale of Odysseus. Oda will go down in history as one of the greatest story tellers in the world. oddly enough, i had watched the 4 kids version and thought nothing of it, untill several years later where i remembered a show that i had wanted to see, i ended up finding it on some random free to watch site and caught myself up to episode 640, i spent two whole months catching up. now, im one of those people that once i read a book or watch a series i cant go back and rewatch it simply becuase i remember the storyline and what happens, but with one piece and some other pieces of media, i have gone back and rewatched it, and fell in love with the series again. my favorite arc is water 7. my favorite character is Zoro.

With the success and popularity of the recent live action, it can only accelerate the sales of the comics, and so even when it was already accelerating, and has beaten batman, despite Supereyepatch estimating that it would take a decade, when it only took him a couple years, he's almost certainly going to topple Superman, and maybe even become the one single most popular author out there.

4:55 I have been watching One Piece since it first aired with the 4kids dub, all the way back in 2004. Even through the terrible dubs, the horrible rap, and the 4kids censorship, the beauty of the show shined through. I watched until 2009, when I ended up in a pretty bad situation in my life, the last episode was the ending of the Sabaody Archipelago arc, then when I got in a more stable place in 2012, I made the habit of watching at least once a year every year from beginning to current. And I have yet to have a watch through where I don't notice something new.

React to Live Action One Piece? It's fun. The practical effects and actual work building the functional ships alone make it worth it, but they actually condensed it and took narrative liberties that just work. The manga will always be the best way to consume the story. But its the goofiest thing ive ever read that had actually made me cry multiple times.

thing is with One Piece, character introductions are done so well, they can be memorized with the least amount of difficulty. so even with say 800+ characters, i personally remember most if not ALL of those characters. that's also a testament to how Oda makes sure no two characters are truly alike.

people sometimes say that it's not fair to compare one piece to comics like batman, because it has more volumes. but one piece has only 105 volumes and one that comes out every 3 months. While batman has more than 1200 and there's about one new comic every month

as of now, there are 1060~ chapters and 1400+ named characters. It's in it's final saga, meaning it will likely be ending in the 1200-1300 chapters range. including shonen jump sales, One Piece has outsold both Superman and Batman in LIFETIME SALES, doubly impressive because of the extensive pirating and online hosting system prevalent for manga and anime, an issue which plagues comics to a significantly lesser extent.

Oda is a dinosaur in the industry, one of only a handful of notable mangaka left from his generation. At this point he could legit tell a lot of the new writers coming into Shonen Jump that he's been a top selling author since before they were born.😅

  • @unclelink

Currently at 1090 chapters (300 behind Hajime No Ippo but that's another story, no pun intended).
While I appreciate the upsurge in fans, it also brought the toxic fans as though you can't separate the two.
I try recommending Bakuman, not because of the main story but because of it presents the world of manga. It's not pretty. Deadlines, competition, health, etc. You can have a hit series but if you don't maintain reader interest/consistency, all that work could be dropped like a hot potato.
Makes on appreciate your favourite manga even more!

I remember when i see qne piece for the first time, me and my little brother(R.I.P.) take a bus to another city, to see the premiere of Spiderman with Tobey Maguire, on a budget we have the money counted to buy Mangas in the store there and to the movie and popcorn and soda, when we enter the store we buy the mangas and see a new manga that come in the month called One Piece, my brother say to buy it i say next time, then we go on foot to the teather, when the movie ends is still day and we retrace 12 miles to the terminal to take our bus, in the terminal there was a little shop that sold papers and some comics, tehy have 2 or 3 mangas they sell, and in that moment they for some reason have 4 mangas, the 4 was One Piece and my bro say to buy it because we go on foot we have extra cash, and that is that.

Its not just that Oda is among the best selling authors of Anime/Manga. Or Comics..... Its of All time. Like he hanging with people Like Tolkien. Rowling. Shakespeare. He has Surpassed Authors like Stephen King and Tom Clancy or even Doctor Seuss. The only other Anime/Manga Author anywhere CLOSE is Toriyama. And Dragonball Series is 11 years older yet Oda higher on the list. He is in fact Tied with Rowling in the top 10 for the 2 youngest on the list as far as time writing. And this is accounting for Most writers with in the last couple hundred years world wide. It is INSANE. In 26 years he has created something that is out selling, out preforming and having as much or more a cultural impact as things like Shakespeare.
