Ironically I own 2 of them too. 1992 and a 1996. They still run. I've owned them since 2000. The issues they have depend on the year for the motors, but the suspension and chassis is the common traits for all of them at this age they suffer from dry rot and rust obviously. The front end gets rotted or bad Engine Cradle subframe bushings. There was a recall years ago on those. I believe on 1992s "Engine cradle Bolts and retainers" and the rears have the fancy Transverse composit leaf springs kinda like the corvette that crack at the ends and always lose their rubber insulators where the spring meets the lower side of the rear wheel knuckles. This can be remedied with square cut peices of truck tire rubber stacked. It is a solution for low saggy rear suspension and creaking noise on W body Cars. The 3.1 multi ports engines are die hard. And the 3100s engines get that common intake manifold issue. Cheers
I just bought a mint condition Oldsmobile Achieva S with 55,000 original miles for $1,000 everything works ice cold A/C and even has remote start installed and 4 new tires ~ I love your videos because you’re like me, you don’t get as excited over exotic or expensive cars as you do diamonds in the rough, cream puffs; rare finds like these! It’s just awesome to see a car that manages to last 20-40 years just because someone took it apon themselves to love and care for it and keep it alive
Great to see you back, an with another Cutlass. For $400 that's not bad at all, especially with working A/C! Hope you can get the wagon footage from your old phone, how's that camper van going any progress?
Cutlass Supreme indeed.... Good to see you again. I like how you see the potential in the car. I see it too. A few repairs and it would be ready to roll.
Is the white Malibu with a black spoiler new? It looks like it has a V6 badge on the back, and I though the other one(s) you had were Ecotecs. My first car had a 3100, so I'm nostalgic. It seems like a lot of the 1980s-1990s GM cars had very few differences between trim levels and many of the "high end" options were available on the base trim. That may be what happened with the gold Cutlass.
I bought a 1994 Chevy van the end of February and lo and behold the rear tires were original. I didn't find out until I'd driven it home 150 miles and driven it around home another couple hundred. I suspected that might be the case though, I didn't push too much. lol. $400 for a car that runs and drives is amazing in this car market. I'd bet that cluster would sell for half what you paid for the car. Heck the tires I just bought were $300 plus installation.
My grandmother had one of these and she loved it. She would take her friends to the library in it, they would go out to eat at Morrison's (you're in Florida you remember those), she went to Publix and took all her friends. Every year it went on the train with her to West Virginia for the summer and the moment they had 5 days of cold lower than 45°, she would book a return trip amd start her taxi service all over again. For most of the elderly people in her apartment community, she was a savior. Then someone stole it and they destroyed it. Insurance paid her $2000 since it was 9 years old and that wasn't enough to get a new used car she liked and she stopped driving.
I just got a 1995 SL model with just under 108k. It is a similar - maybe the same - color. The body and lights are slightly different. I think they look better than than configuration. The dash is a lot more molded and sleeker. The interior in like new except for a little wear on the driver seat from getting in and out.
Even here in the Carolina's where we don't get much rust you don't see these much anymore. Most just got worn out and junked. Good to see a decent one saved. it isn't perfect but 71k miles and for $400 who's complaining?
I forgot to add, my 1992 has 320,000 miles on her. 😂That W body fifth Generation olds Cutlass is a Base S model, then comes SL then International, the giveaway is the hubcaps and the old digital instrument cluster and Climate control, the more premium models had 16 inch alloys and the electronic climate control and premium instrument cluster with Tach oil pressure temp and volts. Along with power mirrors trunk popper, Power Antenna/ Tape deck with EQ and Keyless entry, Fog lamps, and rear defrost, optional power sun roof with Leather. My Blue 92 had all of that except the leather and power roof. The idea thing if you love them, is to find a good donor car that is loaded. And swap swap swap parts . All good even the newer Cutlass seats from a 1995 96 and 97 all fit in the earlier W body. How do I know? I've owned 4 total scrapped 2 after harvesting parts. Everything. Good luck. Happy to see another mid 90s Olds Fan. Beautiful cars. Not the classic Olds Muscle , 442 etc. But super innovative for the early 1990s.
Been checking every other day since the last video on the wagon, good to see you back with another one Al ! The Cutlass look's in great shape, I wouldn't find anything this nice for $400 here in the UK. Any Update videos planned for the Cavaliers and the GMC Camper?
I like this car and miss Oldsmobile. My neighbors knew for ages late mother had one in white sadly they made her stopped driving for some reason, another guy knew he had a '94 it too was crashed into house on corner from where my late grandmother used to live he passed away from alzheimer disease 15 years ago I rode in it once before. I love myself some Oldsmobile cars.
Hey Big Al, I was wondering when you would post another vid. It looks like another diamond in the rough. I remember when those cars were new. In fact, I remember many of the cars in your collection when they were new. Of course, it's more exciting seeing them today compared with when they first came out. The hint of nostalgia does the trick. Looking forward to more of your vids. I know what you mean about the astronomical rise in the cost of used cars. My brother bought a 13 Corolla with 87k in Nov for around 10k. Today it would be closer to 13k. I'm going to try and hold on to my 07 Grand Marquis GS. 71 original k. Don't want to be stuck with another monthly payment. A quick question: Where can I find the white Lithium grease? I have some surface rust on the rear drivers door panel towards the bottom. Not eaten through. Take care, Joe
My 94 Sunbird had that same 3.1 v6 and had 67,000mi when I got it. Alternator and water pump were very easy to swap. When that car got totaled, it had close to 230,000 mi on the all original drive train. And despite that, it still ran and drove. Had 10 good years out of that car. Those engines will go for a long time when taken care of properly.
The digital was the base while the analog was the option because it included a tachometer, temp, oil pressure, and voltage gauge. That is one sweet cutlass, great find! Would love to have a 90-93 cutlass supreme one day.
Most of the cars I tend to buy are pretty reliable; I just check all the fluids and if there are common issues with a certain model I look out for those issues. For example, timing chain rattle on Ecotecs, or oil and coolant mixing on later 3.1s.
Definitely a good buy. You could take the parts you want for your white car off that one, put the old parts from the white car back on this and then sell it on for a good profit...
Ahhh the good old Cutlass Supreme..this was my first car!!! Mine was a 97. It was a southern car in mint condition no rust at all!! I got it sophomore year in high school and totaled it the summer after graduation. I was planning on keeping it through college. It only had a little over 80,000 miles on it..It still hurts to this day thinking about it. There’s nothing like your first baby 😞😢
I really enjoy the content. I really love the older GM cars. I hate the newer cars what's the technology and it's hard to fix unless you're a computer scientist.
Those early 90s Cutlass's (Cutlasses?) are pretty neat and always seemed to have higher end options than most other W-Body cars at the time. Any running and driving car for $400 bucks is a steal these days. Looking forward to my next one, I just picked up my next FWD GM project/daily driver, a 2007 Malibu Maxx with 94k and the 3.5. Not a bad car for the money. I prefer the 70's cutlass'. Even the 78-79's. The goverment regulations really took its tole on the US car makers.
That''s not bad. A runner for 600 is worth it all the way. You don't find to many deals like that anymore.
Has the motor ever been pulled out? That oil was very clean. Just a bit to clean.
I'm sure Tyler Hoover is jealous as hell now. The Car Wizard could fix this up for him and he could give it away for his next Christmas special
