At first I thought: „Great, now I need to buy brush pens, alcohol markers und Sumi brushes, thanks a lot Prof Lieu!“ Now I think the Sumi brush on its own might do 🤣 I love these mushrooms so much!! I can‘t believe you haven‘t been painting with water color for decades!
Wow I've never seen watercolors being used this way, the pencil-like sketches, the textural effects of the brush... Somehow reminds me of oil pastel. This video was very inspiring! Thanks for sharing your journey with us :)

Wow. I loved this so much. I really enjoy watching you do art and hearing you talk about it. I love that you do it in real time. This helps so much and you have a true artists heart. You are so talented! Can’t wait to try some of these techniques.
tysm!! Painting in real time has always been important for me to show; when you see time lapses you really don't get to learn much about the pacing of painting which is often so much slower than people think it is! -Prof Lieu
Thank you, hearing your views on methods and brush techniques was fantastic, it made total scene, lightbulb moment. Your use of language has helped me understand a lot more in a very short space of time. The way you use the paint I have not seen before, extremely inspiring. I'm new to paint and was feeling deflated, until watched this. I know what I'll be doing today. Going to focus on my landscape, beach pebbles but will be trying fungi in the future x
That is such a good point, that you can keep all the colours really vibrant through the painting process then adjust it at the end rather than trying to nail the colours and have them all muddy at the end. I had the exact problem with two of my paintings and was trying to figure out where I went wrong and this just opened my eyes 👀 ! Such a simple thing that can have such an impact on the work! Thank you 🙏 Will deffo have this in mind next time I’m struggling with the colours...
You're right, it's so easy for watercolor paintings to get muddy! Good luck with your future works, we're always happy to help :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Did you see Clara's watercolor bread painting? That one totally wowed me with its texture, the way you feel about this mushroom here. Totally turned my idea of watercolor on its head! ruclips.net/video/fHlgjBCwIQw/видео.html -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I am trying watercolors and it is really challenging, but I love it. They are just so magical, they express the life giving power of the water and it is transferred into the picture.
It's been a long time since I've been on a mushroom hunt. Artist, archaeologist or anthropologist where my dream jobs. Thankfully I am able to experience the joys of the other two through visual means or as casual hobbies. I ❤️ the mushroom painting so beautiful!
I am a mushroom forager and a beginner watercolor enthusiast. To meld the two would be a dream during the winter when I can’t get out. Thank you for this.
Watching again….loving your watercolor technique of dry brush with such varying marks. Thanks for the commentary about your process as well. This will be helpful to try to apply. Going to try some sumi brushes as well. Time to find some goodies in the woods to paint!
I really really want to get parts 3 and 4 done, but I'm a 1 woman production company. We just don't have the budget to hire editors to take the work off my hands! Our edited tutorials are incredibly time consuming to put together to begin with, I'm doing the best I can, but I wouldn't hold your breath, it's going to be a while. ☹ -Prof Lieu
@@artprof I know, you mentioned to us several times that you guys are shorthanded and also short funded. your videos have helped me quite a lot for water color since I started to use this medium two weeks ago. Clair you have introduced me to a new way of thinking about brush strokes with watercolor. Thank you! it seemed you were using a soft brush like a squirrel or goat hair-----I wonder how the strokes may appear or be different if a brush with a little more snap back was used. mmmm I must do some experimentation.. Got to go try this. Bye
Loving the outcome! Awesome colours and use of shape. I'm feeling very inspired, thank u, I missed it. How long have you been painting with watercolours?
Edit: These landscapes are so cool! I've never had an occasion to see anything like this in my region of Europe so it's really nice that you included material from your trip. Cute and warm video! And it's funny to hear about you gathering shrooms, here it's pretty common to go out for them every autumn so I know which ones are edible from my grandma and which ones want to kill me 😅
I honestly haven't picked up watercolors since high school, always felt intimidated by watercolor, so this tutorial is the first time I have really spent time with this media. -Prof Lieu
Hi! There are soooo many types of paper out there; I would say that it is important to have watercolor paper, and it certainly does help to have cold press paper which has a rough texture. That texture brings out the dry brush technique beautifully! If you can afford it, it's really worth getting the good quality watercolor paper. -Prof Lieu
Wait, what? Where's part 3 and 4? I was getting right into this series, then crickets...... :)). I can't believe those giant colourful mushrooms are edible. Wow, they must be good. We have incredible fungi in Tasmania, but like everything else in Australia, it will kill you.
Part 3 and 4 haven't been released yet, still working on it! These studio tutorials unfortunately take a looooooong time to finish, as I'm a 1 woman production "team." -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Ha, ha, I already knew that was the answer. I know how much work these videos are and I truly appreciate it. My point really was how much I was enjoying the videos.
Ok watching this I realized how much ive been scared of (sort of)dry brushing and making brush textures while painting with watercolor 😂 and also I’ve been using more snappy haired brushes that snap back to being straight instead of soft haired so that affected it too I guess

the mushroom part with the dry brush techniques is kind of revelation to me. And you dont necessarily need the expensive cotton paper for this, right?
