En 2021, el Festival de Jazz de Barcelona me dedicó el retrato de artista y tuve 5 conciertos. Para uno de ellos se me ocurrió la idea de juntar a todos los músicos con los que había grabado un CD de la colección de los “presentas”. Eran 15 músicos y casi podía formar una big band: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira, Rita Payés, Marc Martín, Joan Mar Sauqué, Èlia Bastida, Joan Codina, Alba Armengou, Carla Motis, Joana Casanova, Jan Domènech, Marçal Perramon, Joan Martí y Alba Esteban.
Cada músico de los presentados escogió un tema.

Un thème superbe qui n'est pas un classique du jazz, un big band de feu dirigé par Maestro Joan et deux solistes époustouflantes: la discrète et talentueuse Carla, éblouissante ici et Eva dont le solo est magnifique, somptueux, les mots me manquent... Merci à tous, c'est vraiment très beau!
Carla va bientôt rattraper Andréa, Eva est au top tout comme le Band. Un plaisir à chaque écoute. Merci à Joan et à tous !

A very sparkling professional rendition of a work by someone new to me:
Toshiko Akiyoshi is a Japanese-American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader and graduate of Berklee College of Music. Akiyoshi received fourteen Grammy Award nominations and was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer awards in Down Beat magazine's annual Readers' Poll. Born: 12 December 1929 (age 93 years), Liaoyang, China

Toshiko Akiyoshi is still with us at 93 years of age. Hope she gets to hear this wonderful rendition!
Toshiko came to the U.S. in the fifties to attend Berklee School of Music and appeared on the television show "What's My Line?" in 1956 !
La guitarra de Carla Motis ofrece un encanto especial al grupo de músicos, sencilla, precisa, melodiosa. Ya no encuentro aquellos pequeños entre los músicos, son jóvenes caminando hacia la adultez, a disfrutar estos momentos juntos inmortalizados en los videos, todavía no aparecen lentes para vista cansada para leer partituras: "La gloria de la juventud".

This is surely peak band? Solid gold each member. Carla cool, crisp and collected. Eva doing what she always excels at, creating the most attractive solos, and the others so sharp it seems unreal...
Love the little smile on Eva's face when she's played her solo so perfectly, it's undeniable. Are these the most beautiful and soulful, brilliant women in the world ? I think so.

第二次世界大戦中、秋吉敏子さんの両親は、日本陸軍が中国に作った傀儡国家、満州へ開拓団の一員として移住していました。
そこで生まれた秋吉敏子さんが少女時代に現地で見た、果てしなく続く満州の黄色い土の道路の思い出として、彼女はこの作品を作曲しました。
これは悲しい戦争の思い出の曲です。私たち人類は、決して悲惨な戦争を繰り返してはなりません。

Exceptional teaching! Very difficult to motivate young jazz musicians to listen, play tastefully, and tell a story when they solo. Guitar, very interesting solo with original ideas developing. Beautiful alto solo sound. Congratulations to all!

Hello Joan, it's been a while since I viewed your videos. It looks like I've missed out on a lot of action. Your kids have come a long way since I first got exposed to the SAJB. I'm glad Carla has gained the confidence to flawlessly solo thanks to her mentor; Josep Traver. Her solo on Django' 'Minor Swing' alongside Josep back in 2013 was my first exposure to her skills and she's come a long way since then. Here, Carla is a mix of Galbraith/Hall/Metheny. Awesome. Best to all.

The guitar soloist picked such interesting and beautiful notes in her solo. I think her tone is fine. I've listened the Akiyoshi/ Tabacken band's recording dozens of times and played it in bands myself. I think this is my favorite version of the tune. These young musicians sound like they've been playing together for years. How do they do it?!!!
Well... they DO play together for years!
For more detail: Most of these folks joined this band at age 12 or so (some at 6 or 8) and have played with the band till they 'graduated' at 21 or so years. They then can play in festivals and events with the band as they wish. Most seems to show up for large festivals---like this concert. So, most have played with the SAJB for 10 or more years. By the way, all of these years are well documented here on RUclips if you look around.
