It’s good to know both, pulling down guard and to wrestle. Wrestling is very useful in jiu jitsu, but it’s unfortunately way less effective against way heavier and bigger opponent, since in wrestling weight matters a lot. You would never see an absolute division in wresting. Pulling Gard works well against them, and also against good wrestler but you gotta learn to pull it well, not just sitting on floor. Instead, force them to come in your close guard or whatever the guard you feel good into.
when you get that single leg, before you start trying to pull him down you should try to step forward and put your foot in between his leg AND THEN step back with your other leg, thats how i learned to do the single leg and it works super well
Usually the leg on the side of the arm you passed across is going to be open. One big Idea I tried to drill into myself while training was to shoot in and grab a leg whenever I saw one was open. So sometimes I’d pass an arm across and that leg would be open so I’d shoot. But sometimes I’d pass it across and it wasn’t open so I wouldn’t shoot. But it’s still is a good opportunity to fake a shot.

We all had 4 matches in the round robin. Me, the guy that won, and the guy that subbed me went 3-1. But only 2 people could go to the finals. So the 2 people that would have the match for the finals was decided by who had the most subs. I had no subs so I was the one who didn’t get to go to the finals.
Keep that head up when shooting!!! Best advice from me is to just go to a real wrestling club for some months, so you really get the hang of it. Then you can turn back to jits or just staying at wrestling like real men, just kidding 💪💪💪
i got one move that destroys all butt scoots , right knee . that's it no more butt scoot or consciousness . pulling guard is only for sport jiujits , also i have seen multiple dudes try to pull guard in real fights at clubs and get molly wopped by random drunk dudes . you dont want to be on the bottem in a real fight where your getting punched in the face and head butted period .

As a white belt who’s a former varsity wrestler, I got you. I hate using too much energy on take downs so I always used ones that use little energy. Ankle pick is a great one. To set it up you want the opposite arm from the ankle you’re going for around the neck. Play with him a bit and force him to put that foot forward by pulling him towards you. As soon as that foot comes your way you want to force his head towards his own ankle while pulling his ankle in towards you in like X type motion. Easy take down little effort. I also love the Iowa but it’s called something different everywhere. It’s basically a guillotine but your other arm goes under his armpit and across his back. Whichever way that arm is pointing you circle that way and jack his arm up until he spins to the ground. You’ll have one of the most solid halves in while his shoulders are down. Honestly I’ve tapped kids in wrestling using this pin when it’s in deep enough. Although I’m just a white belt these two have been extremely effective against other white belts and blue belts in my gym. Dope video man!

You are pretty darn good at your martial arts, but so are LOADS of people. The reason I love your channel is because you are ridiculously good at explaining what is going on as the match goes. With the Olympics coming up, would you consider doing commentary video of the wrestling?
Great job Josh! Always enjoy watching your progression - especially in things you (most people) are uncomfortable with - wrestling. Its typically a brutal sport that most people that are good at have supernatural ability. Most aren't cut out for wrestling, but you made it look easy with 60 days of hard work, great!
Uchi mata and the chin whip are both great counters to single legs. Neither takes a whole lot of skill. Wrestling style o goshi is my favorite takedown. Once you have them loaded on your hips, it doesn't matter how good they are, and you know whether or not you're going to get the throw from the moment you cross step. Also, if someone ever tries to hip toss you, drop your hips below theirs and body lock.
If you want a good reason to not guard pull watch Pride, people on their butts get soccer kicked, stomped and smashed, sport BJJ is getting ridiculous, didn't see rickson gracie ever sit his butt down 😅 😅
Watch both highlight reels and instructional videos from Jon Smith if you want to be an expert at finishing shots. Think like Bruce Lee, use what works from his techniques as they apply to your BJJ game, ditch the stuff that doesn't work. Trial and error will be part of the learning curve but I guarantee learning a lot of what Jon Smith is a master of will greatly help your takedown game when it comes to finishing shots, especially single legs. Hell, I'd even love to see a BJJ artist who loves pulling guard learn to apply Jon Smiths low single techniques to BJJ.
I applaud your willingness to fill in weaknesses and that attitude is needed to push jiujitsu forward out of its current awkward state. But if we are ever going to get good at standing grappling we have to stop learning from people who suck at it. Jiujitsu people are trash on their feet. The people everyone claims are really good are terrible. The only reason their dorky nonsense works is because everyone else sucks too.
Congrats on standing up! I hope you keep this up because this is exactly how you improve as a fighter. It'd be fun to see you join a beginner wrestler or judo tournament with your jiu jitsu skills
I'm a judo/wrestling guy dabbling in jiujitsu, so it's funny to see the opposite direction. I'm curious on what your opinion is on duck-unders in jiu-jitsu? Not sure if it's guillotine hazard or if you think it transitions well to something like arm-triangle etc.?
pulling guard is not real , you cant do that in self defense so you shouldn't train it for competition , you'll develop bad habits that you WILL go straight too when put under pressure and get wrecked , pull guard on asphalt against a wrestler( or someone with a basic knowledge of how to stay on top like a bouncer) once and tell me how that goes for you .
Wrestling is hard but when you fight someone with no wrestling it feels unfair almost.

I am horrible at takedowns, but I'm better at passing than bottom guard so I have to become better at wrestling
An important lesson here is that getting a good takedown game means you'll usually be up on points

The throw / takedown at 2:32 would be classified as a harai goshi in judo. Uchi mata has tori's leg up between the legs of uke.

He's not very qualified to do that TBH. Wrestling rules are substantially different and he's not even too adept at wrestling for BJJ
