Who lives in a house like this? Forgotten WWI Village for workers | The Austin Village.

  • The Austin Village in-between Longbridge and Northfield in Birmingham was an estate of housing built in 1917 to house female munition workers and their children. Lesser well known than than counterparts like Bournville Village in Birmingham or Port Sunlight in The Wirral it is a beautiful example of housing provided for workers. Only ever meant to last 17 years they still stand. Most interestingly these homes were imported as a flat pack, made from cedarwood and imported from The USA.
I remember the first time I drove through The Austin Village, heavy snow had come down and the college I was lecturing at was closed, I needed to drive home and someone recommended a "back route" for me - and I drove past these fascinating wooden bungalows. I didn't think much other than "wow they were nice" and not until recently have I taken the time to look them up, inspired by my lovely You Tube community. What I found totally exceeded my expectations.
As always I hope you enjoy the video, this is only a short one, a thank you - a kind of bonus video for all your support.

Thank you. It's weird really. Being a "Brummie" we are told our accent is unattractive, stupid and unpopular since childhood, but then the Peaky Blinders came along and it seemed accepted again - I've always loved it because .. well it's my family, warmth and love so I am proud of it - glad to be getting a bit of it online :)

This was very interesting to me. My daughter lives in a house, in New York, that was a kit from the very same company in Michigan that built these very same homes. The interior has been redone but they are the very same homes. I was gobsmacked to see these! Thank you for enough ting me on this interesting topic of self build home kits.

I wish I could have filmed more on the estate but it felt too intrusive. I live at the end of some nailers cottages and there’s often people randomly in the street taking photos of the houses & filming them (not mine, mines boring) and coming right up to the windows and taking photos into the front rooms - it’s not on 😂

Wow, this video is fascinating too. I've been recently obsessed about all the social housing projects of the 1930's, the largest in Europe, being in Leeds (or was, as it's now all demolished) There's one building in Liverpool still standing, called the Bullring and they've redeveloped it for students. I was so excited to see it right in the city centre. Well done Lucy, these videos are so interesting!

Gosh! how beautiful these places are Lucy? I was born and grew up in West London so I’ve never heard of this place or the story. They are so cute these homes. Thank you so much for showing us all… as again I never knew… Guess it’s a true saying never too old to learn.
Regarding the interest on Tower blocks there are some beautiful ones but you’d have to travel to London that’s a very long trip for a vlog.

I’ve lived in a high rise tower block for almost two years now. There are loads of perks to living in one, the views, the sunsets from my balcony etc, but also downsides as the building was built in the 1960’s. For many it’s a love hate due to maintenance, upkeep & noise as they are made from re-enforced concrete so noise from neighbours is always an issue, but overall they are not too unpleasant to live in if you practice a little TLC on your home 🏡 hope this helps lucy!

I like your policy of being unobtrusive, i used to live in a Devon chocolate box village and as lovely as it was to look at, it was hell during tourist season, they would walk into your garden, sometimes your house, block the roads, park badly, were rude and generally unpleasant, sadly that village like many has list the generations of families and thier history if favour of second home owners and people who can afford thease once poor people's homes.

Unfortunately, as I live in the US, I only know of housing here. But if you're interested, look into the ABC houses in Richland, Washington. Richland was an entire town built by the government to house workers at the Hanford site where uranium was processed during WWII. It was a completely closed town and had everything its residents needed - stores, bowling alleys, movie theaters, etc. The architect that designed Richland didn't want it to look like government housing, so he designed curving streets, parks, playgrounds, and several different house plans (each given a letter of the alphabet, hence "ABC" houses.). If I recall correctly, about 8,000 people lived in Richland. Very interesting history, if you care to look across the pond.

How about looking at artists work. Some houses get run down and people moved out. But then artists moved in and painted everything outside and in. Making the place beautiful.

There’s one in London I am on the waiting list to see, I absolutely can’t wait! I’ve got to wait until July though. Seems like a log time!

My aunty lived in one of those flats! I remember the lifts never worked and I used to moan about climbing up the the 14th floor!
