  • In this patient interview, James recalls his horrific experience with a transrectal prostate biopsy. Transrectal prostate biopsies can cause serious infections, which James said almost claimed his life. The impact wasn't limited to James.
There are TWO main ways to biopsy the prostate: transrectal (through the rectum) and transperineal (through the perineum). Transperineal biopsies significantly reduce the risk of infection by preventing fecal matter from entering the bloodstream.
PrecisionPoint® is the Better, Safer Prostate Biopsy™
Of transperineal biopsies, PrecisionPoint® is the only biopsy to be invented by a practicing urologist, performed by physicians with expert training, and made entirely in the USA.

I had a transrectal biopsy 12 years ago, and luckily no problems. But I would never get a transrectal biopsy again because since then, I have learned of all the possible risks. Sure, it does not happen to most men, but when infection does occur, it can have severe consequences. Many urologists continue to do the transrectals because they don't want to bother to learn something better.
