The play that Larry Bird makes at the end of the video I have never seen made before or since. Ok BTM, I’m 49 (used to work for the Bruins), and I’m well versed in Larry Bird stories. Was he shut down in this series or did Bird shoot poorly ? Reid was solid without question. Bird led the team in every other statistical category for that series ( please look it up).
Cool video. I remember the ‘81 Finals well. I was a Boston teenager who grew up loving Jo Jo White and the two time Celtics Champions of the 1970’s. The 80’s Celtics were even more impressive but you’re not giving the 80’s Rockets enough credit. They beat the defending Champion Lakers, not a small feat. Rookie Bill Willoughby had some amazing moments in that series. Also, there were other big time stars on the Rockets. Moses Malone was a dominant player, future Hall of Famer and future Finals MVP. Calvin Murphy, also a future Hall of Famer scored 36 points off the bench one game. And don’t forget that the ‘81 Rockets also had two future head coaches on their roster, Rudy Tomjonavich and Mike Dunleavy(senior). The C’s had 4 future head coaches on their roster but Houston was legit. Not to be taken lightly. Give them their props.
This video is a little misleading because the Celtics in this series had very balanced scoring with no player averaging over 17 points a game. Larry may have "only" averaged 15 points a game but understand that Boston played with a total team concept and they shared the ball and didn't depend on any one player to score big. It should also be noted that Bird lead Boston in assists at 7 a game, had over two steals a game and 15 rebounds a game so it's not like Bird wasn't making significant contributions because he was still the Celtics best player. Houston was also a tough team and beat the Lakers in the playoffs that year in the first round and Moses Malone was still a great player. I remember watching those finals and was kinda surprised they gave the MVP to Maxwell because there was no doubt Bird was their best player and shut the door in game 6 with 27 points, 13 assists, and a dagger 3 to seal the deal.
Those rocket players would come out to the local parks and play pick up games with us. No matter the ages. Moses doesn’t get the respect he deserves as a big man. Reid left on the court. Like PJ tucker does today
I haven't watch NBA on the regular since Jordan retired, but I will say that I watched a lot of Bird when I was a kid. I love watching Bird highlights, and I love watching your Bird video. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great story, man. I just got into your videos. Larry Bird’s beating Robert Reed at his own game by catching his own offensive rebound in such a carnival-like fashion is quite fitting of a champion, as champions step up when it matters most, as you say. As an atheist, I also like that Reed’s prayer fell silent.
I knew Robert Reid personally and played basketball with him, in our freshman year at Samuel Clemens High School. You could tell by watching him even back in those days, that he would be a star one day. He had great touch and feel and was an outstanding jump shooter.
Bird wasn't very fast per se, but he was quick footed and had great anticipation. He always thought two or three steps ahead and was always liable for a steal. That's what made him a great defender.
Robert Reid is pretty much a local celebrity here in Houston. He was a low key type of player who didn’t look for his shot a whole lot but he actually could do it all. There weren’t too many 6’8 guys that could handle the ball the way he did and had a decent outside shot at the same time back then. He actually ran the point for us during the 1986 finals run. He was a friendly guy. He greeted me when I was a little kid at a family reunion.(He was dating one of my cousins.) I believe if he had played in a bigger market at the time like LA, New York or Philly he may have been selected to some all star games or at least would have gotten the notoriety he deserved.
I attended game 4 of that finals in Houston, which the Rockets won. I lived within walking distance of the Summit where the game was played and walked there to buy some tickets. Because the Rockets were surprise winners of the Western Conference, I didn't have much of a wait in line to buy the tickets. I remember Reid playing well in those games but Moses Malone was the man all year long. That was also Rudy Tomjanovich's last year as a player.
Love the Robert Reid story. Would love to see ya do an old schools on Pete Maravitch. College and pro years. Best ball handler ever. His history is a great story from a little kid till he started getting injured. Died way to young too.

Bird was cold shooting early in the series but his rebounding was ridiculous...21 rebounds in the finals vs Malone is filthy....Bird handed Cornbread the MVP on a platter though he fed him easy looks all series...then the close out game Bird played like Bird and drove the stake in that's one of his beat games he was everywhere especially down the stretch...Celts would have won in the next year if Tiny didn't get hurt and the Sixers weren't so damn good back then 😆
Good video overall. Being a basketball enthusiast you realize that the Celtics played a rotational defense and that players switched men often. Sometimes several switches during one possession. In all fairness to Robert Reid he was a good player overall but never great. Many good players have great games but let’s not confuse the issue by trying to make it seem like he tore Bird up, he didn’t. Knowing that you are a Bird fan you also know he was a great defender although you dissed him by calling him not a great defensive player. His numbers dispute your assessment, rebounds, steals and blocks are all above average for a good defensive player. Particularly when the game was close or on the line Bird would make THE play to win. Ask any Detroit player who drove the spike through their heart defensively.
Bird was a great TEAM defender, he wasn't a particularly good one-on-one defender. That Isiah inbound pass steal was a PRIME example of the difference.
I agree if one was to say Black Boy it would make National News ..Also not religious or not it's alleged Reid and many other players would snort coke and meth (crank) back then so they would have an edge ...powerful stimulants
Agreed. Not sure a lot of folks commenting on here actually watched the whole video. I really have no issue with it. Reverse that and folks get all bent out of shape.
I didn't fully appreciate how great he was until he had left the league. I was a Celtic fan from back in the Havlicek/Cowen days and became a Bird Fan after he came to Boston and delivered.
Moses,Malone, was so incredible during that year. He was often described as the superhuman rocket.centee In the 3 game series rockets upset lakers .He destroyed Abdul Jabbar in that series. Moses scored 53 in first game and had perhaps 20 Boards. The playoffs were Reids coming out party. He absolutely stifled Bird with his speed athleticism and hustle. He defended Bird better than anyonre including Michael Cooper. Props to Bobby Joe Reid, Allen Leavelll and of courses Moses!

I don't know if "respected" is the right word. Bird talked trash during the games but was quiet and humble off the court. I'll bet it was something he learned playing against black guys. The first time I ever heard the "N" word was playing in a pick-up game when I first went in the service in 1980. It was a different kind of game for me. You could get an assist by taking it out of bounds. I was already a Celtic fan when Bird came along. It seemed to me that the ones who played the best against the Celtics were Bernard King, Andrew Tony, Joe Dumar, and James Worthy.
@@bricefleckenstein9666 Are you saying that Bird never had any pick up game outside his own neighborhood? He had to have some decent competition to get that good.

Such a pity that Reid's attitude of an honest, religious and hard working man is no longer that dominant among the Black community and instead there is the stupid cult of the gangsta and the hustla. The society could have been in a different place now...

Great video, as usual. Congratulations!!
Love the Bird videos! More please
By the time I saw Robert Reid play for the Rockets , he was point guard and Rodney McCray was the first point forward .
I would watch the nba again if dudes like Reid still played.
That is great!
Poor Robert Reid ...It must still be agreed that he shouldn't have messed with the Birdman.
Those rocket players would come out to the local parks and play pick up games with us. No matter the ages. Moses doesn’t get the respect he deserves as a big man. Reid left on the court. Like PJ tucker does today
Love the intro from matt barnes.
I said hi to his ex wife and he started to chase me around the kitchen island. I was delivering uber eats too.
I remember Robert Reid, Great Player.....
Good , not great.
I’ve watched probably at least 70-100 vids lol it’s cool to know a lot of people rock with you
I haven't watch NBA on the regular since Jordan retired, but I will say that I watched a lot of Bird when I was a kid.
Wow! This channel is amazing. Awesome editing. First class stuff.
I knew Robert Reid personally and played basketball with him, in our freshman year at Samuel Clemens High School. You could tell by watching him even back in those days, that he would be a star one day. He had great touch and feel and was an outstanding jump shooter.
Dude love this you are very knowledgeable good vids too
Robert Reed with Moses Malone plus Calvin Murray. Not bad back in the 1981.
I'm old.😀
Bird was unbelievable to win the championship.
Bird wasn't very fast per se, but he was quick footed and had great anticipation. He always thought two or three steps ahead and was always liable for a steal. That's what made him a great defender.
When you bank one in from out top, your mind just tells you right then, it's going to be my night.
They need to make a Larry Bird Movie. Not enough respect on his name.
Where isn't there respect for Bird? He's on everyone's top 5 or top 10 greatest of all time list.
Did you say that just to get reactions? Or you’re young and wasn’t around during the Hick from the sticks Bird era? Bless your heart ❤️
@@slagletoby I started watching the NBA in 94. Bird was done by then. I've seen people in my age group rank Kevin Durant, Kawhi, and Giannis over Bird. I disagree with them but that opinion is out there.
@@grizzlyg4008 None of those 3 have Bird's skill level - they are a lot more athletic (even over prime Bird) but Bird could school ANY of them on the offensive end with his SKILLS and that outstanding muscle in his HEAD.
@@grizzlyg4008 Giannis seems to play a different position. Durant is a softy, a bit too one dimensional and sulks a lot. Kawhi is the closest thing to Bird, but has more to prove in next few years. Also, never saw Bird talk "load management" and depart a team with a supposed injury nobody could ever figure out. But on a talent level, Kawhi has pretty much all the gifts.
Thanks for the video. I remember Reid being the only guy
Wasn't that the rockets team with Moses Malone and Calvin Murphy? Everyone forgets about Robert Reid! Great video! Love the Matt Barnes intro too! Another great underrated player!
I enjoy your nuggets of NBA history, thanks.
I’ve never heard of Robert Reid before this.
He is a spitting image of the heir of Soul Glo that was supposed to marry Lisa McDowell.
I am glad I watched this, learning new knowledge of past NBA greats is a always a win! Thanks!
Coming to America. That is a classic!
Just let your SOOUUL... GLOW, baby. Feel it all so silky smooth.
It seems like Bird and Reed did not go head-to-head so much. More like they were just situational match-ups based on the footage from the Finals.
Bird is CLUTCH! The best!
I was in Houston then, loved the Rockets, but respected the Lakers and Celtics.
Thats awesome Matt Barnes gave you that shout out i love your channel and i love All the smoke
His ex wife and Barnes whooped his ass i said the shot out was awesome cuz both their platforms are the shit as far as basketball content
And who uses the word wanksta wtf
Do a story on the Houston Rockets team that was really good. But because of Lou Lloyd and Mitchell Wiggins getting busted for cocaine and being booted from the league. It took them years to rebuild from that.
And John Lucas.
@Basketball Time Machine Congrats on the shout out From "All The Smoke"!
Reid was very unselfish team player, who could've been a star, he ran point guard at times, very good all around player
Robert Reid should be in the hall of fame
Great narration style!
How was Moses on this team--- he must have been traded to Philly right after the season? But great video friend, id totally forgotten Robert Ried--- and there was even a Billy- smooth operator Paultz sighting. But Bird was so unique-- he would go on tears that didn't seem possible. Really enjoyed this./// march 2020
Moses played another year for Houston and won his 2nd league MVP and then was traded to Philly.
@@leroi1152 Moses was with Houston starting very early in the '76-77 season (played 2 games for Buffalo first), went to Philly during the '82 offseason.
Wow, really interesting how Jordan’s game looks like Robert Reid. I wonder if Jordan studied him (and don’t believe that story that Jordan never watched an NBA game).
Reid's game had a passing resemblance to Dr. J's - who Jordan DID model his game on to a large degree.
Great video! Really like how you covered Robert Reid’s game-I didn’t know how good of a two-way player he was. I only remember Reid from getting dunked on by a pre-NBA MJ in 84 when they had the NBA All-Stars vs Team USA exhibitions before olympics. Great stuff 👍🏻
Never seen an nba game. But i enjoy your channel and the older players stories you tell
Lifelong celts fan here. Robert Reid was a great player. Big time in the crunch too.
Bird was cold shooting early in the series but his rebounding was ridiculous...21 rebounds in the finals vs Malone is filthy....Bird handed Cornbread the MVP on a platter though he fed him easy looks all series...then the close out game Bird played like Bird and drove the stake in that's one of his beat games he was everywhere especially down the stretch...Celts would have won in the next year if Tiny didn't get hurt and the Sixers weren't so damn good back then 😆
Thank you! Your stuff is the best!
Sean, my good man, what a voice you have!
Reid- “.... white boy Bird...”. Why the racism?
I agree if one was to say Black Boy it would make National News ..Also not religious or not it's alleged Reid and many other players would snort coke and meth (crank) back then so they would have an edge ...powerful stimulants
Agreed. Not sure a lot of folks commenting on here actually watched the whole video. I really have no issue with it. Reverse that and folks get all bent out of shape.
This reminded me of Billy Paultz on the Utah Jazz against the Rockets in '85 when Eaton went down. Great games.
Great video, but I gotta ask what the name of the beat at the end is called.
Shoutout from Matt Barnes, damn man. Long time fan glad you got a come up.
My man's got that Supreme Jubilee's playing, ight I see you with the classic catalog 🙌😂
There were so many GREAT players back then, but very few of them played with the intelligence of the Celtics, and especially Bird.
Great athleticism and control from Reid. So long ago I can hardly recall. Great times in NBA.
I think Larry Bird is underrated actually.
Who says he’s not great? Idk anyone who don’t think he’s one of the greatest.
He's definitely not underrated. Especially if you're old enough to have witnessed him playing. Grew up hating Boston. But had mad respect for Bird
I didn't fully appreciate how great he was until he had left the league. I was a Celtic fan from back in the Havlicek/Cowen days and became a Bird Fan after he came to Boston and delivered.
Larry was a basketball genius.!
Damn dude you love some Larry bird
Moses,Malone, was so incredible during that year. He was often described as the superhuman rocket.centee In the 3 game series rockets upset lakers .He destroyed Abdul Jabbar in that series. Moses scored 53 in first game and had perhaps 20 Boards. The playoffs were Reids coming out party. He absolutely stifled Bird with his speed athleticism and hustle. He defended Bird better than anyonre including Michael Cooper. Props to Bobby Joe Reid, Allen Leavelll and of courses Moses!
That’s what UP on the shout out from Matt Barnes. Rightfully deserved
Please show one of Bird making a basket from behind the board. :)
There are only five reasons in my life why i watch and am intrested in basketball. 1. Bird 2. Jordan 3.Shaq 4. Ben Wallace 5. And BTM Basketball Time Machine 😊
Feel like i should mention Rodman, Meng and Steve Nash. Those guys were amazing to watch all in very different ways.
@@momosupremacy8349 meng?
I really enjoyed Vince Carter in his prime, as well as Iverson. Magic was fun to watch too
Love the Big Ben shout out!
no Magic, no Kareem, no Kobe?
He played the father in the Brady bunch series
Really?
Thinking about Larry Bird today man thanks!
I used to think I was an NBA fan. Never heard of him. He is a rock solid player.
I believe there was a Calvin Murphy sighting in these clips
there wasn't many that Larry respected, but Robert would be one of only a handful that he did.
@@teej783 Bird would have had to pick that up in college - wasn't something he learned before that.
@@bricefleckenstein9666 Are you saying that Bird never had any pick up game outside his own neighborhood? He had to have some decent competition to get that good.
@@teej783 Why are you ASSUMING that there would have been a significant number of black folks "in his neighborhood" OR IN HIS COUNTY when he was growing up?
The small town I did most of MY growing up in had ZERO - and we were only 3 miles from Indianapolis, Bird grew up in SOUTHERN INDIANA which was a long-time KKK stronghold.
Bird is 2 and a fraction years older than I am, so SAME timeframe there.
@@bricefleckenstein9666 I'm not assuming he grew up in a neighborhood full of black kids but I'm sure he didn't just stay at home all through HS. He also played in a league on the same team as Magic Johnson before going pro. I'm sure he also had sports figure heroes that were not from French Lick. You being in the Klan has nothing to do with Bird's basketball influences while growing up.
Love your show Sean I love the ccelts and I get to. See them on your show
Where does the quote in the thumbnail come in?
Such a pity that Reid's attitude of an honest, religious and hard working man is no longer that dominant among the Black community and instead there is the stupid cult of the gangsta and the hustla. The society could have been in a different place now...
A million Black churches, millions of us working, in college, living our lives - the majority of the Black community has never been and never will be gangsters. There is no cult.
F P You must be a really sheltered black dude. Go work at any black majority public school and you will see the gangsta mentality. Cult is the wrong word. Even DMX is a preacher so I am not sure if religion makes a difference or not.
Billy Paultz ... now there's a name I haven't heard in at least 20 years or more.
He was so smooth. Old school smooth. The game is totally different now .
