- When you see a College Football team finish the season at 10-3, you expect them to be dominant, but not in the case of Iowa football in 2023. The Hawkeyes carried the worst offense in the entire FBS, along with one of the top defenses. It was a bizarre combination to see on the field. They somehow finished the season winning their division, reaching the Big-Ten championship, then getting blown out by Michigan. Yeah they are not going to be able to compete with Ohio St, Mich, Penn St, Wash, and Oregon. And there will be no divisions either, so they won't be able to get a fraudulent title game berth.

You dont get all of the best teams each year and iowa plays the most trophy games that the big ten kept, so they get Min, Wis, and Neb every year, plus 2 add on teams from the 4. If you look at schedule next year, iowa could be 10-2, or even 11-1. Question is will that be enough to get to championship. The playoffs next year might have 3 B10 teams, will Uowa be the 3rd???
It was honestly one of the most painful seasons to watch Ever despite being one of only a handful of 10 win seasons. Everyone knows defense wins championships, in this case just games no championships

Glad we are now done with divisions in the B1G. As an Iowa Fan I glad deserving teams in the B1G will play in a conference championship. Iowa will continue to struggle on offense but will improve is how I see it. Hell, not hard to improve from dead last on offense. As far as building a better offense that is up to the new offensive coordinator and the coaching staff at Iowa. We shall see. What an anomaly of a year to go 10-2 with that sorry offensive performance.

Calling Iowa the "worst" 10-3 team is an insult to Phil Parker, the best DC in the country. Iowa didn't win 10 because of some fluke; it was a weird, deliberate scheme that involved grinding out wins. It came to bite them on the ass against superior teams like Penn State and Michigan, and meant that all of the inferior teams had a chance (or even win, in the case of Minnesota), but no team that wins 10 games can be labeled "worst."
I know it's harsh, but it's true. They are not a bad team of course, but it is a fact that they finished the season as the lowest ranked P5 10-win team. When they played tough comp (Mich, Penn St), they absolutely folded. They had a chance to prove themselves as better than people thought by staying competitive in those games, but they couldn't. Agree to disagree, but I still appreciate you for watching and leaving your opinion🤝 That's what this channel is all about!

Thinking after seeing Ohio st. Today in the bowl game after loosing their qb and only one other offensive player. IOWA did very well this year after loosing most of the offensive team for the year.
Completely disagree, they played an absolute horrendously easy schedule. I don’t know what to tell you other than they got blown out by every good team they played. It’s incredible. The best team they beat is 7-5 and we’re talking about how low of a score they had.

If you look at the big last year, Iowa had the fifth best D but I think they were like third in the big. One of those was Mich. As for the way they got beat, one of their TDS was a seven yard field on a controversial fumble where the Mich player picked up the ball to hand it back to the ref, not run it in. The second was on a great punt return of about 90 yards. Six yard to go. You can check the rest of the stats if you want but Mich was not as good as their score. We also held their great running back below his usual. The biggest thing about Iowa is the game is played by a strategy over the whole game. Not an excuse on the Penn state game but the weather was bad and Iowa had some really bad breaks. They also had to play D over 90 plays.
If you like 9-6, 13-10, 7-3 games watch the Iowa Hawkeyes

Fraud is a little strong. Overrated given that terrible offense but the team doesn’t make that claim-that’s the media, other coaches, etc. Iowa plays the schedule it plays against the teams that are on the schedule and that’s it.

I agree, there's no reason why Iowa should get to play in the championship over Penn State and Ohio State. The Big-ten west has never beat the east in the history of the current format. Luckily, next year they are disbanding divisions and letting the best two teams play in the title game.
Not iowas fault Nebraska, Wisc,Minnesota and Northwestern have been failing in the last few years. Iowa has been consistent, and have been the best team in the west. Some of the championship games have been close.
Look at it this way, you lose your transfer qb, you lose both tes that your passing game revolves around, lose one of your best CBs in team history, and you still win 10 games in the big 10.
Your 3 losses are against white out night penn state in a tropical depression(I don’t think even Georgia wins that game) a rule that probably gets amended in the offseason, and flat zeroed Michigan because your offense looks more injured than an emo after they ran outta perks.
If they get anywhere close 25 pts per game and keep this defense for next year, I think they get into the playoffs

Iowa is boring football.
Everyone likes to point to Brian Ferentz and Kirk. But the biggest reason why Iowa's offense has been terrible the last couple of season is the Oline. They don't have a Tristan Wirfs or Brandon Scherff type of player on this line.

Iowa fans and the athletic department want more than that I bet.* They're tired of seeing the Hawkeyes getting their ass kicked in big games (bowl games, league title games, and etc.) by more athletic teams or teams that just plain outcoach them. Iowa needs a more diverse roster geographically, they need to recruit more pro-style QB's, they need to recruit more speed, and they need to make the transfer portal system work for them. *Iowa in the Ferentz era (1999-present) has had some of the most average or slightly above average looking teams with 8, 9, 10 wins I've ever seen in my 33 years of watching college football.*

The premise is incorrect, if only because even the worst college football team today would annhilate the best teams from the 1950's and 60's. Forget the fact that every player is bigger, faster, stronger and more talented than those guys and with years of better, more scripted training, diet, and facilities. With the weight of history on their side, their coaches could plan for any and every offensive and defensive scheme from the past. And they would have plays that their opponents had never dreamed of.
Of course with the old school rules, the new players would have to get used to running past goal posts placed at the endzone goal line, very few pass interference calls, and no replay reviews. The play "always stands as called."
Still, 10 win Iowa is not the "worst 10 win team ever." In fact, they would easily be the championship team if they played a season in, say, 1955.
What sounds better for a title:
"The worst 10-win team in recent history" or "The worst 10-win team EVER"
I hope you see what I mean.

Some programs are satisfied with average. That's just how it goes in College Football. I agree that they need to use transfer portal/NIL to their advantage, but with Ferentz being an old-school guy, I can't see him adapting. Look at it this way though we get criticized for not having an offense and the style of play we have but look at USC they have one of the best offenses in the counry and they are 7-5 probably gonna be 7-6 after bowl game and were 10-3 about to be 10-4 after our bowl game and we have the worst offense in the country what does that tell you its not all about offense in a football game defense and special team matters USC literally with as great of an offense as they have should be undefeated if were being honest and they give up just as much as they score if not more witch results in where they are at we dont score much points in a game but neither does the opponet so you tell me which style works better ours or USC

Three of Tenn's losses were to some of the best teams in college football and Iowa was a phantom hand wave away from 11 wins with half of their starters on the bench due to injuries. This isn't hard, dude. They're a good team.

as an iowa fan, couldnt agree more with this video. Unfortunately our problems on offense come from the head coach, Kirk, and not Brian. We will never have any semblance of offense as long as Kirk is the head coach. It will be a rude awakening for us when we cant beat up on bad Big 10 West teams for 7 free wins every year.

The Minnesota ending? It was brutal, maybe incorrect, but according to the rules, not terrible. The refs don't want the returning team trying to trick the kicking team with ambiguous arm gestures.

He was only using his hands to signal his blockers, it wasn't an over-the-top gesture. The fact they called it back on review was even worse. No one on Minnesota thought that he signaled fair catch. Even if we agree to disagree, thanks for watching!
Right. And in no feasible way did any of that happen at all. At no point was a single soul in that entire stadium especially Minnesota as it happened on their sideline, not one player or coach even flinched thinking he was calling for a fc or invalid fc. The b10 even said that following Monday (imo accidentally proving it was the wrong call) “ it didn’t look like an invalid fair catch from the POINT OF VIEW ON THE OFFICIALS ON THE FIELD , but when you watch it in replay from a ELEVATED OVERHEAD PERSPECTIVE LOOKING DOWN ON TOP OF THE FIELD AND PLAYERS, that is when you can see how it could/does look like the left arm is waving and that’s where it could be interpreted as the invalid fair catch. It Was the right call..
In what fkn world is the on field view/vision of every official and every player no longer relevant ? Especially with a call where the only correct way to even make that fn call is if the on field officials in real time saw the movement of the left hand and interpreted it as an invalid fair catch. Leaving it up to “ interpretation” is already a bs way to enforce a rule. They also told the coaches the play was being reviewed to make sure he didn’t step out. Once that was confirmed they then continued to watch and scour the play over and over until they found something. Somebody somewhere planted that lil seed of horse shit to the review officials to which they then completely manipulated what qualifies to make that call. It was the most disgusting and by far the worst call in all of college football this season. Sorry for the novel here but that is absolutely the hill I’m (figuratively speaking RUclips.) dyiing on

How weak is the BIG if this team won 10 games and was in the conference champ game? They would have won 4 games in the SEC. Typical of BIG teams. All the lower tier SEC teams look way more athletic than the lower tier SEC teams. Hell all the SEC teams look more athletic than BIG teams. Even the good ones. Just have to look at the NFL drafts to see that.
The B1G had one of the worst years that I've ever seen from them. I've been watching CFB since 2010. The entire top-6 or more in the SEC could've won the B1G West and made it to the title game over Iowa 😂.

Tory Taylor was the best player on offense for most of the time he was on campus. I dont disagree with them being a very weird team to hit 10 wins (should have been 11) but I guarantee there have been worse 10 win teams out of smaller conferences. Maybe the worst power 5 10 win team just because of how they literally couldn't move the ball 3 feet forward but even then im not entire sold

BIG-10 ought to be handicapped in the pre-season rankings -10 positions. Such a weak conference. Michigan is going to get annihilated in the playoffs. Alabama will have their way on both sides.

As an Iowa fan, I do appreciate what KF has accomplished in his career and at Iowa. Certainly admirable in a number of ways.
But for those that bow to the idol of Saint kirk, don’t forget he gave his unqualified kid a million dollar job as a state employee, circumvented the laws of the state, and then kept him there for years after proving he couldn’t do the job.

Your take is interesting and you got some things right. One is Iowa's HUGE discrepency between their awful offense and excellent defense. Yes, they were very bad on offense this year and they even put up the exact goose egg against Tennesee that you alluded to. But there are some points I take issue with here.
1st off, you missed that, in one of those early wins, Iowa beat Michigan State, a team from the East, albeit not a top team.
Next, I'd argue that, despite not being as good as the East, the B1G West was actually pretty decent this year.
Facts: The West beat the East a respectable 10 times vs. 12 losses despite the East having all those ranked teams you mentioned. In addition, they won their 1st two bowl games, with Northwestern beating PAC powerhouse Utah. In fact the West went 2-2 overall this bowl season and, without the hinderance of pesky PAC12 refs who seem to have it in for Wisconsin, the Badgers dominated SEC standout LSU and should have beat them. It's true that the West struggled against the 3 top teams from the East; Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and that is because ... well, almost any team in any conference would have trouble with those teams! Michigan is the favorite to win the NATTY! But when you go one more deep in the East, to the #4 spot Maryland, that team lost 2 of 3 games to teams from the West. This is the same Maryland team that beat Auburn in their recent bowl game.
Wisconsin was really the best team from the West. Unfortunately, a PAC crew handed their preseason road game to Washinton State. There were 2 crucial calls. One, ruling Cougar QB down on the 1 yard line after an obvious safety that would have put the Badgers ahead late in the game. And, the other, a phantom fumble call against Bucky on the subsequent drive, where the runner was clearly down. Either of these calls not being botched, Wisconsin wins that game and goes into conference play ranked and confident. How often can a team get robbed by a crew from the PAC conference? (see the debacle in the desert) This time twice in the same year!
Wisky clearly had a bad game against Iowa, one in which they lost their starting QB. The talent dropoff was steep at the position for them. Plus Iowa's excellent special teams play bailed out their offense.
So Iowa didn't have a great offense but "defense wins championships." At least it did this year in the West.

Lost the 3rd string te to injury as well for a period of time
Lost both rb1 and rb2 for multiple games
And then Lost the Best dback in the conference, and arguably the best dback and punt returner in the nation Cooper Dejean

Respect. I could’ve given some more context for sure. It still stands that this was the lowest ranked P5 10-win team. And playing against high level comp (Mich, Penn State), they got blown out. Worst offense in the entire FBS. Injuries suck, and I get they played a role, but they are part of the game.

Look for Iowa to do it again next year, at least 10 wins. That is if they can find linebackers.
Look at the Iowa win totals since 2015- i think they are in the top 15 in power 5. It isnt a fluke. They might be the opposite of LSU, but cmon folks, defense and special teams is part of the game. Iowa consistently wins those two parts of the game. I will take wins over flashy offense any day of the week!
They actually have a manageable schedule next year which is surprising to me. Easy non-con games, and they don't play Michigan or Oregon. I hope they are a 10-win team! Thanks for watching.
