How the heck was the micro and mini fusion reactor figured out before the research and industrial scale? The only way I could think of that working is cold fusion. The problem with that though is that it could definitely be scaled up, so why not just shove in the disposable reactor into him for the time being, and then figure out the other stuff later. Well, that's only if the fusion we see is in fact cold fusion, if not then it makes even less sense because then they would know how to make it work.

Prime’s Problem went a little deeper then just power, they could power Prime easily the problem was that they couldn’t power both him and the Tesla Shield Generator meant to protect him from Heavy bombardments (like the one that destroyed him in Fallout 3) at the same time.

It'd suffer the same problems as the German maus tank, too heavy to cross the majority of bridges, very vulnerable to artillery and difficult to transport from battlefield to battlefield especially in the wasteland, due to lack of logistical infrastructure

In Canon, I like to say that the Pre-war US had the know how to make prime work but the knowledge was discovered by the varying corporations that ruled over the US. Only the brotherhood, who had been scouring old war ruins that combined all the collective knowledge to make Liberty prime to work
I suppose this could make sense, but nuclear fusion power was still relatively new at the time of LP’s construction, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the genius behind it needed some time to figure out how solutions using the new technology.

I feel like we have to assume that the only reason Liberty Prime wasn't designed with a properly functional power core was because Mr. House probably wasn't working on the designs for it himself at all.
Liberty Prime had enough power, it's issue was that it couldn't shunt the power properly to all of it's systems without some of them shorting out. Maddison was a specialist in system like that which is why she was selected to work on project purity. She never really says where she learned her skills from or why but her specialty in power systems was not in high demand in the post war wasteland so i imagine there's not many people like her around to draw from when the need arrives.
