I am so happy that I found a jar of fireflies. Learning so much about your Jewish life haas been a blessing. I am a Christian but never knew very much about Jewish faith. I could never understand why there was so much hatred towards the Jews during history. I was always told that the Jews wereGods chosen people yet we were taught that Jesus was God’s son. You have inspired me to learn more. I have been listening to a Rabbi on utube and learning so much that I didn’t know and must admit find it confusing and at the same time enlightens and I can understand your desire to convert. I am 78 and I don’t desire to convert but to learn much as I can about what God wants from all of us.it seems that Love and compassion are at the. Top of the list. Thank you.
It is important to note as Christians that we are Abraham’s spiritual seed by faith and wild branches that become grafted into the natural Jewish tree. We know that God is NOT done with the Jewish people and the church has not replaced Israel. Heaven forbid. I am very interested and have always had a special place for Jewish people in my heart since I was saved (1996). I too love his channel and Chana has such an open and happy way of sharing her faith.
YES! Your candor and devotion are so rare. Many people today are NOT dedicated to anything. Culture, and the preservation of its practices, is so important. Where would world history be without Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek? We could all learn a thing or two from your example of constancy. Loved this video. Just want to share a story about a relative of mine, ultra-Orthodox Jews with 14 children (bli ayin hara). I asked her once whether it got harder with each one, or easier, or what. She said first of all, it's not like you go from no children to 14 all at once. You add new ones pretty gradually so it doesn't feel like such a huge change from one to the next. :-) But more importantly, she said the hardest was when she had five. I was surprised and asked why. She said "because after my fifth child, I took a very good parenting class, and after that everything was easier to manage." I thought that was pretty profound, actually, and am glad that she looked outside herself for some guidance.
I have a large family and have observed large families for years and there is something about 5 or 6 kids that is very challenging (me included). I think it has something to do with 4 being a HANDFUL but still manageable but after the 6th you just kind of let go of your expectations and learn to roll with things. For me 5 was a handful, 6 overwhelmed me until I just relaxed and learned that no one is perfect and we won't be, life is about learning and growing which includes making mistakes and THATS OK!

I think the most beautiful thing about Orthodox Judiasm is that you do everything you do unto G-d. I was trying to figure out my obsession with learning about your faith and I think that is it. Hi Chana! Great video! Would really like a Shabbat rules video, I worked with Orthodox , grew up in a reformed neighborhood, and was raised and am practicing Lutheran. It always worked out well at work because there were many of us with different faiths and practices, we would cover for each other so everyone got their Holiday and Sabbath off. When I moved out of state, I had a huge breakfast catered in by an Orthodox restaurant so all could enjoy, it was a wonderful place to work. As always, a pleasure to watch and learn....

Oh thank goodness you shared that the Harvestehude transition Was from one to two! I am right there and feel the struggle. On one hand it is easier, you know the groove, but one the other hand there are two little humans whose needs need to be fulfilled and there is so much to do with all the housework and stuff. Bella is absolutely wonderful! ❤️ I work in the medical field, so I work with both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish physicians; they were all surprised and delighted when I wished them "Shana Tovah" last week. Well, of course I would! But, a lot of the (non-Jewish) staff most likely didn't think to do so. I find your holidays an emotional time for me, even as a Christian. LOL, my ex-in-laws said I was way too polite, and I never realized that, then I became even more polite (because I'm stubborn like that). I went to choir practice today, and I'm making my friend vegetarian chili tonight, I felt really bad yesterday.

For wearing skirts in winter and staying warm: first, wear thick tights (leggings with feet) underneath, preferably woollen, but cotton works as well. That keeps you nice and warm up until about 5°C I'd say. Below that: wear two skirts! It looks very classy as well, if you ask me. Like wearing a petticoat. The outer skirt should be a flowier, wider type so it doesn't get bunched up. I'm wearing skirts 90% of the time and feel like pants are much colder actually.
It totally agree that skirts are warmer than pants/jeans! I would have never believed it unless I had tried it. I wear skirts pretty much all the time. Leggings, skirt, and slip keep me VERY warm in the winter! Boots help keep the ankles warm! 😂
Regarding being non-Jewish and wearing pants - while non-Jewish women are allowed to wear pants in Jewish communities, I definitely did get a lot of looks when I stepped off the train in Borough Park (Brooklyn) wearing dress pants. I was there for a job interview and was very obviously out of place as all of the other women were wearing skirts or dresses. I did not realize that I was going to be interviewed by a Hasidic man for this job until I got there. It was winter and I had on a short sleeved blouse under my coat, so when I arrived, I kept my coat on for the entire interview to keep my arms covered. His assistant asked me if I was cold and I just shook my head awkwardly lol. But, I did get the job!
I love your remark about unintentional intentional community. Pretty sure the Orthodox community in my old neighborhood started off unintentionally, but it was definitely intentional after the eruv went up!
Hi Hannah! I listened to what you said about your wedding ring, and I had similar concerns since I got married recently and didn’t want to scratch up my wedding band. Have you thought about trying out silicone wedding bands? I have one from a company called Enso and they’re on Amazon. I wear my silicone band way more than my actual wedding band since I’m quite active and I also do a lot of cleaning. They’re squishy so you wouldn’t ever have to worry about scratching your children. Hopefully this is something that might work for you. 😊

On the Pesach topic I am ashekanzi so if I had to come to your house on Pesach I would matza, Vegetables,fruit, coffee,tea,water,so there is still lots of food that an ashekanzi can eat in a sefardi home on Pesach

Do others in your Orthodox community home school their children? If so, would you consider sharing teaching responsibilities with another mom? For example, having their kids join yours for Science and your kids join the other family for Geography. Or, maybe further coordinate lesson plans with the other mom where you teach one day and they teach the next. I am picturing you sort of having "a day off" to spend more snuggle time with the baby, read a book, or knowing you, clean the house. Just a thought.

I should check out Speakly, I love studying languages, it's such a good way to understand a culture, and even if you don't become fluent, studies have shown studying a language is one of the best ways to fight dementia and Alzheimer's both of which which run in my family. I studied German in high school, Japanese in college both to basic conversational level, along with countless languages I've started and stopped when a new interest hit, now I am studying Hebrew and Yiddish casually on Duolingo.
Chana thank you for your plain explanation of the skirt pants question. I've always heard, no matter what faith, it pleases my Lord etc. Your explanation, EXCELLENT! LOL! The airplane at the end bloopers,...TOO FUNNY!! Where I live 2 blocks from a Hospital. It's a county hospital. When I first started living here there was a horrible wreck on the Interstate at 3am we got woke up to the sound of what sounded like the whole Army landing in lol 3 helicopters landing lol. My mothers family were orthodox russian jews who came to our country in 1919. They kept a kosher home until my grandfather decided he wanted to adopt more of the customs of his new country. My Mother married my Catholic Father in 1950; She agreed to raise their children Catholic. My grandparents always considered me Jewish due to the belief the blood of the mother....... I love watching your videos as it gives me a good insight into the jewish way of life outside of how my mother was raised. Unfortunately the heritage of Ashkenazi Jews has affected many woman in my family. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I hope you continue with the questions and answer videos as I've learned alot.
I had to chuckle as you live in TX and I in Michigan where it’s in the mid 30’s. Yes it’s Fall here, leaves will turn shortly and drop then we can look forward to negative degrees, sweaters and boots. Texas cold must be like us northerners fall?
Texas definitely doesn't get the same kind of cold y'all get! But it is cold to us :) We are currently in the 50s in the early morning, but it warms up to the 80s in the afternoon. Our leaves mostly turn brown and drop off in a matter of a few days which is sad. When I see Fall leaves I get really excited :) The coldest it usually gets here is in the 30s on average in winter :)

As a homecare nurse l saw all races and religions. I loved it! Rule #1 was l was a guest in their home. We have a large Jewish community and l tried to be very careful about certain things. I always asked everyone "l wash my hands?" I love the unscripted spots at the end.😉

People would want to give us gifts (not supposed to accept them) so l always "paid" them. Being born and raised on a farm in Indiana it was so wonderful to learn from my special patients. Question for next time: if you don’t read Hebrew, do you use a prayer book/siddur with transliteration, or do you daven in English? I always assumed when you were davening in your videos it was in Hebrew! Thanks for sharing.

Just had my second baby a month ago and you just put into words how I'm feeling....drowning. At least the second time around I know I will adjust but right now it's hard.
I want to second that! I have 6 children. I had my first 4 in 4 years. So it was back to back pregnancies and constant breastfeeding. I was exhausted!! Of course I wouldn’t change anything but it was very hard! Like you said, you’ve done this before so you have the confidence that comes from experience. It does take time to adjust. It usually took me 3 months to get my groove back. I was so overwhelmed with my second. I ended up schedule feeding my baby and scheduling his naps so I could have some sense of “control” of my day. I know some people do only demand feeding. You do what works for you. I demand fed my first and I didn’t like it. I never knew when he would want to eat and I couldn’t plan anything. You will find your groove before long! Just remember to do things your way. Don’t let books or blogs take away your special and unique approach to motherhood. You can lose yourself by trying to do things the way others do it. Even if they seem like they are “perfect”. I lost a lot of years trying to model others because I had no clue what I was doing. G-d bless you!

In terms of moving to Israel, if it ever happens, don’t forget, Israel is even more diverse than America, there are plenty American Jews there. I’m sure, you would find some American friends, maybe even with convert Anglo-Saxon background. Btw, my husband and I are both from Eastern Europe, and my husband got this American habit to thank for everything. I came to the US at an older age and it took me some time to get used to being thanked for everything. I would sometimes tell him to stop being so formal with me, but now, it doesn’t bother me anymore, actually, I appreciate it now, especially with a busy life we have, him stopping and thanking me is actually nice. Also, when surroundings change, people do adopt, sometimes even without noticing.
@@jaroffireflies yeah, but homeschooling is not so common in Israel, unfortunately. You know that, I remember you talking about it. I wish it was more common there AND among the orthodox Jews in general. I think it would benefit the future generation.
@@jaroffireflies though, I do know an Israeli family who homeschooled in Israel. They live near Austin now. The mom is as functional as you are. She homeschooled 5 boys (later they had another one), she worked part time and she literally could do anything, like she could single-handedly remodel a home. Oh, and she has a phd in educational psychology.
I like this video. You do a good job of answering questions. As for children dating as someone who has children in their 20’s questions of faith do happen. My youngest son was once dating a catholic girl who was rebelling against the Catholic Church. So I totally get when you say you love your children but want them to date inside the faith however you will still love them if they don’t.

I had to take a break from dog training because of my morning sickness being so bad throughout my entire pregnancy. Hoping to start up again soon :) She's a great dog and has already alerted low blood sugar on her own so I know she will be amazing once trained

I was the last of 6, my mother had me at 42 and she said she is so thankful !!! I miss her now, she was my best friend !!

Chana, quick question: I've seen it both ways..are "Tova" or "Tovah" both acceptable? (I like to be "proper" in my good wishes, even on Pesach, etc.). I looked up the Hebrew and saw both. Pls clarify?

For wearing skirts in winter and staying warm: first, wear thick tights (leggings with feet) underneath, preferably woollen, but cotton works as well. That keeps you nice and warm up until about 5°C I'd say. Below that: wear two skirts! It looks very classy as well, if you ask me. Like wearing a petticoat. The outer skirt should be a flowier, wider type so it doesn't get bunched up. I'm wearing skirts 90% of the time and feel like pants are much colder actually.
It totally agree that skirts are warmer than pants/jeans! I would have never believed it unless I had tried it. I wear skirts pretty much all the time. Leggings, skirt, and slip keep me VERY warm in the winter! Boots help keep the ankles warm! 😂

Regarding being non-Jewish and wearing pants - while non-Jewish women are allowed to wear pants in Jewish communities, I definitely did get a lot of looks when I stepped off the train in Borough Park (Brooklyn) wearing dress pants. I was there for a job interview and was very obviously out of place as all of the other women were wearing skirts or dresses.
I did not realize that I was going to be interviewed by a Hasidic man for this job until I got there. It was winter and I had on a short sleeved blouse under my coat, so when I arrived, I kept my coat on for the entire interview to keep my arms covered. His assistant asked me if I was cold and I just shook my head awkwardly lol. But, I did get the job!

Hi Hannah! I listened to what you said about your wedding ring, and I had similar concerns since I got married recently and didn’t want to scratch up my wedding band.
Have you thought about trying out silicone wedding bands? I have one from a company called Enso and they’re on Amazon.
I wear my silicone band way more than my actual wedding band since I’m quite active and I also do a lot of cleaning. They’re squishy so you wouldn’t ever have to worry about scratching your children.

On the Pesach topic I am ashekanzi so if I had to come to your house on Pesach I would matza, Vegetables,fruit, coffee,tea,water,so there is still lots of food that an ashekanzi can eat in a sefardi home on Pesach

Do others in your Orthodox community home school their children? If so, would you consider sharing teaching responsibilities with another mom? For example, having their kids join yours for Science and your kids join the other family for Geography. Or, maybe further coordinate lesson plans with the other mom where you teach one day and they teach the next. I am picturing you sort of having "a day off" to spend more snuggle time with the baby, read a book, or knowing you, clean the house. Just a thought.
There are and we do :) We have an afternoon that we do lessons together and it’s lovely :)

I should check out Speakly, I love studying languages, it's such a good way to understand a culture, and even if you don't become fluent, studies have shown studying a language is one of the best ways to fight dementia and Alzheimer's both of which which run in my family. I studied German in high school, Japanese in college both to basic conversational level, along with countless languages I've started and stopped when a new interest hit, now I am studying Hebrew and Yiddish casually on Duolingo.

My mothers family were orthodox russian jews who came to our country in 1919. They kept a kosher home until my grandfather decided he wanted to adopt more of the customs of his new country. My Mother married my Catholic Father in 1950; She agreed to raise their children Catholic. My grandparents always considered me Jewish due to the belief the blood of the mother....... I love watching your videos as it gives me a good insight into the jewish way of life outside of how my mother was raised. Unfortunately the heritage of Ashkenazi Jews has affected many woman in my family. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I hope you continue with the questions and answer videos as I've learned alot.

I had to chuckle as you live in TX and I in Michigan where it’s in the mid 30’s. Yes it’s Fall here, leaves will turn shortly and drop then we can look forward to negative degrees, sweaters and boots. Texas cold must be like us northerners fall?
Texas definitely doesn't get the same kind of cold y'all get! But it is cold to us :) We are currently in the 50s in the early morning, but it warms up to the 80s in the afternoon. Our leaves mostly turn brown and drop off in a matter of a few days which is sad. When I see Fall leaves I get really excited :) The coldest it usually gets here is in the 30s on average in winter :)

As a homecare nurse l saw all races and religions. I loved it! Rule #1 was l was a guest in their home. We have a large Jewish community and l tried to be very careful about certain things. I always asked everyone "l wash my hands?" I love the unscripted spots at the end.😉

Question for next time: if you don’t read Hebrew, do you use a prayer book/siddur with transliteration, or do you daven in English? I always assumed when you were davening in your videos it was in Hebrew! Thanks for sharing.

I want to second that! I have 6 children. I had my first 4 in 4 years. So it was back to back pregnancies and constant breastfeeding. I was exhausted!! Of course I wouldn’t change anything but it was very hard! Like you said, you’ve done this before so you have the confidence that comes from experience. It does take time to adjust. It usually took me 3 months to get my groove back. I was so overwhelmed with my second. I ended up schedule feeding my baby and scheduling his naps so I could have some sense of “control” of my day. I know some people do only demand feeding. You do what works for you. I demand fed my first and I didn’t like it. I never knew when he would want to eat and I couldn’t plan anything. You will find your groove before long! Just remember to do things your way. Don’t let books or blogs take away your special and unique approach to motherhood. You can lose yourself by trying to do things the way others do it. Even if they seem like they are “perfect”. I lost a lot of years trying to model others because I had no clue what I was doing. G-d bless you!

I have visited NYC and it’s not really my cup of tea :) I’m happy to live in Texas :)
In terms of moving to Israel, if it ever happens, don’t forget, Israel is even more diverse than America, there are plenty American Jews there. I’m sure, you would find some American friends, maybe even with convert Anglo-Saxon background.
Btw, my husband and I are both from Eastern Europe, and my husband got this American habit to thank for everything. I came to the US at an older age and it took me some time to get used to being thanked for everything. I would sometimes tell him to stop being so formal with me, but now, it doesn’t bother me anymore, actually, I appreciate it now, especially with a busy life we have, him stopping and thanking me is actually nice.
Also, when surroundings change, people do adopt, sometimes even without noticing.

@@jaroffireflies yeah, but homeschooling is not so common in Israel, unfortunately. You know that, I remember you talking about it. I wish it was more common there AND among the orthodox Jews in general. I think it would benefit the future generation.

@@jaroffireflies though, I do know an Israeli family who homeschooled in Israel. They live near Austin now. The mom is as functional as you are. She homeschooled 5 boys (later they had another one), she worked part time and she literally could do anything, like she could single-handedly remodel a home. Oh, and she has a phd in educational psychology.
I think it’s nice to hear it - being polite and thankful in society - I’m American but I have raised my child to be like that

I like this video. You do a good job of answering questions. As for children dating as someone who has children in their 20’s questions of faith do happen. My youngest son was once dating a catholic girl who was rebelling against the Catholic Church. So I totally get when you say you love your children but want them to date inside the faith however you will still love them if they don’t.

Hi there as you mentioned your dog some time back you spoke about some sort of training for your dog to help with one of your children with diabetes did any thing came of it .loved 5he video as usual
I had to take a break from dog training because of my morning sickness being so bad throughout my entire pregnancy. Hoping to start up again soon :) She's a great dog and has already alerted low blood sugar on her own so I know she will be amazing once trained
