Going through the comments and it's really apparent that Harman Kardon isn't what they used to be.
The only time that I have ever got capacitors that still had a 16v charge on them came from a seller on eBay and they were supposed to be new! The seller refunded me my money and I purchased something else from the same seller which turned up new. Those big brown capacitors almost look like the bad ones that I got...

One of the things that you might consider getting is an ESR meter. Those come in real handy for checking bad caps for leakage. Capacitors will gain charge over time if they don't have a bleed off resistor. It comes from EM fields and static electrical charge that's present in dry air. As for dissolving that glue, I'd suggest MEK. I haven't found an adhesive it can't dissolve so far. Of course it dissolves other things too so you have to be careful with it. Great repair though...

I plan to get a true ESR meter at some point. I have one on my watch list which does ESR and a bunch of other tests. I will try the M.E.K solvent next time I need to unglue some caps, great tip thanks!

Check out the 5 transistor esr meter from the EEVblog forum. I plan on building that instead of buying one. For now I use the freq. gen and a scope to look for high esr. It would be nice to have one item to pull out to do so though! In any case, These HK Amp have crap caps in them....that is a given...if you don't recognize the cap brand....replace it if you like the item your are working on. If you want to do more, I would have checked the test point voltages for the caps or where they connect to, to check for the proper voltage choice. If they are already using no name caps, then there is likelyhood that they are also likely going under voltage also.

I've got every receiver I've purchased since 1993. All working flawlessly. My secret (I guess) is don't drop it and keep the top open for ventilation. Strange how that Cap blew. The "X" scribed on the top is supposed to open and allow them to vent. I'd say heat did those caps in. The bulging is from the liquid inside being overheated and expanding. I've seen issues like that on boards that were overheated during the soldering process. Those were SMD lytic caps going though a reflow oven.

I am currently listening to this through one that looks identical except it has 7 channels and according to specs should have either 65 or 75WPC if I recall correctly. Found it in trash a few years ago and works fine with digital inputs, but if I hook it up to any analog source then it will sound very distorted, which I bet means bad caps.
Also when searching up some reviews it seems like it is normal for these things to fail after a short time. Really sad how you are lucky to have it working after warranty expires when most of my vintage gear still works fine today inculding even a few tube radios from the 40s...

Seemed a bit overkill on the caps... these pre-HDMI AV receivers aren't worth much any more and it seems HK had gone down the Chinese outsourcing route by 2005. I think I'd have done enough to get the thing going and forgot about it. But liked the diagnostics.

    • @Artcurus

No, the advantage to this particular model is that it has preamplifier outputs for each channel. You can add any amp you want after. It has full control over the sound for each channel. A real actual control. It also has optical input for full true 5.1 sound.

I have an interesting question for you if you wouldn't mind helping me out. My Panasonic surround receiver died after 20+ yrs of service. I had everything from a 8 track to a blueray player looked up to it. To try to stay with that tradition I've found a Marantz SR4002 and a Harman Kardon AVR 254 surround receiver. I'm having the hardest time choosing between the two. Which would you choose please?

I have this same Harmon Kardon Stereo. Mine is about 10 years old. I have the same problem. Stereo turns on, but no audio out. It was working until a few days ago. I'm not as much an expert with electronics as you are, but I do build and fly quadcopters. ;) If I screw with it for a half hour, it will finally come on. I think it's a switch issue but this thing looks like a nightmare to me to work on..

Hi there I have a Yamaha RXV 3900 and it was working fine till a week back. The problem I am facing is when I switch the power button it goes into safe mode a clicks off. I did try that a few times got the power stable but there is no sound coming from the center channel rest all channels are working fine. I also tried the pre out for center n it was working fine but when I connect the speaker directly to the center there is no sound. What can be the problem. Would really appreciate your guidance here. Thanks. Rgds Dave.

Some glues holding components on go brown and conductive with age and cause shorts and bulging electrolytic capacitors. It needs to be all scraped off or you'll have the same problem at switch on. I'm working on a D class car amplifier with this problem right now.

I find certain models are tough to find a manual for free. Sometimes I get lucky on a google search. Seems to depend on the popularity of the model for repairing. I would really be surprised though if yours isn't just bad capacitors as well, I mean from what I found it seems to be common issue with Harmon during this era.

My receiver will stay in standby. When I try to turn on it try’s to but the lcd display does not come on and goes straight back to standby. I really would like mine repaired it’s been great. • @ngtflyer

40WPC because all of these newer AVRs are designed to work with a powered sub. Most of an amplifier's power goes into the low-end of the spectrum.
Another tell-tale sign that this is a modern unit, aside from the cheapie capacitors used, is the dinky little power transformer. Those tend to fail by way of an internal fusable link that opens up.

The Bigman Says the 40 watts is a rating with all 6 channels driven. Most companies give the wattage ratings with 1 or 2 channels driven but when all channels are driven they drop huge. Harman Kardon gives the real power output instead of inflated numbers.
