As the first deathmatch session I've done in like 10 years, this was a very fun experience :) It was great chatting with you guys! Thank you for having me aboard Doomkid & MtPain27!
It was a pleasure talking to you man, We’ll have to do something like this again for sure!
super fun to listen, it is so weird to hear Coincident speaking calmly while I'm so used to his slapstick clips

Chat n frag with coincident, mtpain27 a doom kid this will be a good video!
It looks like your muscle memory accounts for lag, as you shoot where you think they're most likely to be, rather than where they are. Interesting coping mechanism.
Great stream, you guys all make cracking content and it was interesting to hear more from Coincident along side you guys.
Well spotted man - when the lag gets too crazy it’s all about predicting!
I have a bad modem on my PC and when I play co-op Left 4 Dead for example, I bank my shots on both spam and prediction. And somehow I was _complimented_ on my gunplay once. Your brain really shifts gears when the TPS is bad; even a shooter feels almost like a strategy game sometimes.
Aaagh the horrors of Australian ping! I know it well. 😢 that was flippin awesome, guys. Truly fascinating. I’ve gotta get back into deathmatch one of these days, so fun!
the chat about tribalism in the Doom community is spot on. Imagine all the Doomers, Dooming for today.
They may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one!
I had a very similar introduction to Doom that Coincident did. I used to watch my dad play Wolfenstein and Doom for a few years when they first came out. I had relatives next door to us. I remember my uncle visiting there and he and my dad hooking up and playing deathmatch after Doom 2 came out. Even as a 5-6 year old child back then, I knew I was seeing something special when I saw them firing rockets and plasma at each other from opposite ends of a hallway. Really glad I got to witness that. As a child, I was hooked on Doom back when the games released and I watched my dad play them. It was truly a life changing spectacle for me.
This was a really fascinating conversation to listen in on. Your collective insights on DoomTubing was really edifying, especially for those who want to create doom content in the future.
What I really want to say though, is if you ever do put together that "Tournament of DoomTubers", I would absolutely watch the s**t of of that.
Thank you, I still do want to do that some time!
All this talk reminded me of some of the older youtubers, and I remembered a series of retro-reviews by Ggbeyond that he did over a decade ago called "Exploring the Id" that covers everything id Software did up to Quake 3 Arena. He was one of the few youtubers who acknowledged the significance of Doom's multiplayer, and even talked about his experiences in a Quake Team Fortress clan. I watched it again and found a comment he made recently that he stopped making those videos because retro pc gamers were gatekeeping him. You should check it out when you get a chance. It's pretty well made for being over a decade old and he talks about things with the games and the culture of the time that nobody else seems to cover.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'm definitely going to check that out - sounds really interesting.
Taking me some time to get through this! But great content as always! Keep it up man!
Thanks Tony!
I listened through all 2:23:43 of this while doing gamedev stuff. I fed the algorithm for you! ;D
You’re a champ, Nash!
Great, a Chat'N Frag with MR Facerocket himself..
I was about to comment that I wonder if he'll facerocket himself on this stream. :)
Great episode guys! Hope to see more people of the community in this series :)
Really fun. I hope you do the event you talked about near the end!
Ironic that you mention Brutal Doom and Zero Punctuation here. It was when Yahtzee did a let's play of Brutal Doom on his channel that got me back into playing classic Doom for the first time in over twenty years. I recently played through Eternal Doom with the Brutal Doom mod, simply because the levels could be insanely over-complicated, and I needed something to keep me awake throughout.
As someone who's not really in the Doom community, my experience of Brutal Doom is that it appeals to people who aren't really into the Original. I though it was an interesting development, but i like the elegance of Doom. Whereas all my friend who didn't get Doom were more into Brutal Doom
Indeed. I love the originals to the point where I'm having real difficulty getting into the Unfamiliar modernised fan remake for GZDoom, but I have a caveat: due to having started playing FPSs with Quake 2 and Duke Nukem and such before finding Doom for myself, I just can't give up post-Doom advancements like mouse aim with autoaim disabled and jumping at will. But I do, as I like to call it, respect the map: no jumping to sequence break (only as a quality of life), no sniping enemies from extreme distances unless they're MtPain-certified Monster Window Dressing or an Icon of Sin, and all in all not cheesing the intended gameplay with these new features.
Amazing
I'd absolutely listen to "Storytime With Doomkid".
31:30 Truly a man after my own heart! Dusk's weapon roster and gameplay chemistry is the closest thing to Doom I've found. I feel like modding would be way more versatile if instead of dusk being able to run quake maps would be if we somehow got a unity sdk so we had access to the same tools New Blood had during level design and being able to tweak things a la dehacked. That, and personally me I find quake mapping a bit of a hassle. That said, having an editor that has been used for decades work with a current game makes it so that experienced people know what they're doing and pump out something great.
I really need to get Dusk.. In fact, I’ll do that today!
@@DoomKid Did you get Dusk? The HD graphics update drops on Dec. 10, Dusk's 5th anniversary... and Doom's 30th!
Great episode, it really surprised me how thoughtful Coin's answers were.
The thing about escapist, and zero punctuation is that escapist is a gaming related magazine news king of a channel and website. When the creator of zero punctuation stated, the site got a lot of traction, and everything else dwindled. ZP was for a long time the only thing people cared about, and it became the only content on the channel. Then the magazine changed leadership, and more shows started to fill in the gaps in content. But people don't seem to love them nearly as much as the old ZP. That is still very much the back bone of the channel to this day, despite management's best efforts.
This was interesting to read; I didn't know that about The Escapist :)
And to add to that, before it became a gaming news magazine / channel, it started out as an online magazine that tried to write more than just news about and reviews of video games. They weren't exactly doing New Games Journalism (kudos to anyone who knows what that is!), but I'd say they were New Games Journalism adjacent. I enjoyed their first 50 issues or so, until they started leaning more and more into the gaming news thing and I lost interest.
Hype!
Comment
yeah
Always nice to listen to these, wonderful convos.
Thank you Enimapod, very cool!
I'm Quake 3 Arena years old
You know what could be an interesting topic for an episode of Story Time with Doomkid? If it ever happens lol. Pointing out some mapping gimmicks throughout the years. Just the other day I saw somebody playing a map with missing hexagonal tiles in one room. And they pointed it out like "look at the missing tiles, that's so late ninetees."
I think this is a great idea :) Mainly because a crotchety old grouch like me would be the first to point out that missing tiles is generally an early 2000s thing!!
@@DoomKid See? Well of knowledge :D
2:22:00 - Sounds like Doom Cup to me
If you export the RSKY3 but rename it to RSKY1 in your wad, it'll put the 3rd sky in the first episode's slot. Hopefully that helps!
Halloween is pretty standard here in the UK. Some people go mad, but most kind of can't be arsed. Definitely nowhere near the scale it is in the US.
It was an excuse to egg houses on mischievous night when I was young, which I feel kind of a knobhead for as a adult.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't egg a house or two back when I was a dumb teen..
and I thought MY ping was bad lol
I was getting next-level lag for the first half of this, to the point where I was actually impressed!
all kinds of doom-y things xD
Hahaha, it's so meta of you to mention the deathmatch event at the very end right after talking about people watching the entire video. Makes me strangely self conscious
LOL. I didn’t mean to go meta!
Hey Doomkid, just so you know, I have been getting ads every five minutes or so on this video, and it kinda disrupts the flow of listening to the conversation.
If that is intentional, more power to you, I'm fine with however you choose to manage ads on your channel. But if it's the thing where youtube decides to put more ads in than the creator wanted, you might wanna look into it for future videos
Thank you, I had no idea it was that prevalent. I'll see if I can reduce them!
