I agree, you should have a separate channel for videos. You cannot beat experience gained by your own mistakes and how to overcome them. I very much appreciate your honesty in their production because you show what works for you. I remember in my teens making a tunnel over 3 feet long, which I made using plaster of paris. It only had two faults. It was very heavy moving it to its position and if anything came off the track inside it, I had difficulty removing it. Because I have so many engines going back to Hornby Dublo, Triang Hornby and Wrenn going up to current Hornby and Bachmann, I don't think I will be building a DCC layout. I will stick to what I know, having found out that isolating points means no power and short circuiting in the 1960s. Thank you for your channel.
Hi Don, thanks for your opinion on the channels. DCC isn’t for everyone, it’s only enjoyment that really matters.
A suggestion for you Charlie...
If there will be a tunnel after the viaduct which will go into your fiddleyard at the back of Chadwick TMD, use some curved points as soon as they disappear into the tunnel and have the fiddleyard tracks start to fan out earlier.
This will enable you to have longer length trains.
I think it's better to keep all the model railway stuff in the same place.
You can create playlists so your audience can view the Chadwick layout constructional videos, and another playlist for your technical ones, and just drop a reference in the dialogue with a link appearing in the corner to guide people there.

Regarding curved points, they can be temperamental if they are facing. Trailing points are more reliable but I have to minimise the risk of derailments within the hillside.
Great video Charlie. I look forward to seeing how you marry up the baseboards, and the wiring therein. My only suggestion towards the two level fiddle yard would be, if it's possible without destroying what you have, a gentle slope down to one and gentle rise to the other so that neither is actually level with the scenic side. It could be in imperial or metric....whichever you choose! ;-) Cheers
I’m considering a larger flat fiddle yard now, as otherwise the inclines will be quite steep.

Great Charlie, good idea with the fiddle yard, just remember with elevation = space, you might lose a bit of storage space length wise, to gain the elevation needed one idea is to drop Chadwick TMD a bit lower so you drop say the down main and climb the up up main so you get the height change you need by changing elevation on both roads, but what ever you do I’m sure you’ll figure it out in the end

Have really enjoyed your videos and after years of not participating I am seriously thinking of getting back into the hobby. As an aside the quality of content and presentation is remarkable; makes the so called professionals on TV and other media look like the poor self centred nepotistic amateurs so many of them are.

Your efforts with these model railway videos are a particular favourite of mine on youtube as I am still planning my OO scale layout to be constructed this Spring (has to be Spring-time as most of the baseboard construction will be dome out of doors, so weather is a factor!) For what it is worth, a separate channel for your production videos is a good idea; keep up the great work and please keep the videos rolling!

Thanks for another video. As regards another "how to" channel I think just choose what is easier for you. You could include links to the new channel from Chadwick in the area before the comments on Chadwick.
As regards the baseboard height differences I would suggest putting adjustable feet onto the cut down legs of the old TMD board (if you haven't already done so!) to simplify connecting the two they do make true alignment so easy and are not expensive.

Richard Cocksey's idea sounds interesting & could well be a good solution to minimise the incline for the twin height fiddle yard.

Regarding the baseboard height, yes I do have adjustable feet but I do my utmost to get it right and use thin balsa to pack it if I get it wrong.

Charlie, So you've got a chicken and egg situation with old boards and new boards. The higher fiddle siding can go down the centre of the yard or at the front of the baseboard. The hardest track to look after is the one on the " low- level" hard up against the riser's for the upper level. But I have full confidence in you to sort it. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Love the videos and your an artist with your wiring. I guess it's been mentioned., The incline your Going to need will be quite long and on curves especially, the incline will need to be relax a bit if not nearly level. I have two inclines myself and both with curves only though trail and error I got mine where 90% of locos are happy on them.

Personally I would prefer 2 separate channels, I would watch both but it simply makes it easier to pick and choose what I want to watch next, (and when to watch it).

For configuring track work I use software called any rail which is excellent .
Not only can you use this to plan your layout on paper you can also export it to a program called train player where you can run trains with your chosen stock on your latest track plan.

Your production of the videos looks great,love it when you incorporate reference shots taken with your drone. Hi Charlie, You did a video showing a wiring board that hung down on hinges I think.
I am thinking of a similar wiring service board that will hang by hinges from my front benchwork 1x3 support , which is 6 inches recessed. Then swing it up so that it extends into the room by about 24 inches. You then can stand here and work on the board and mount your electrics. Then swing it back under and up, flat to the deck, and anchor it there.Wiring would enter onto this board right at the point of the hinges so as the board swings, the wiring will just simply slilghtly rotate with it. Or put it all into a harness with enough service loop to make the swing. I do not fancy crawling under the deck and working over my head with a light. What are your thoughts. Also thought to mount this about in the middle of the layout so that the DCC is mid point between the ends of the buss lines to cut down on loss. I have an old pc power supply that will also mount here to distribute 3.5, 12, 5, -12 around for scenic lighting and tortoise machines. I want the service board to swing up against the deck so I can still crawl under it to the back of the deck if required. Bob

Yes my main DCC components are mounted on hinged boards so if I need to change them, it will be straight forward.
Plan this arrangement early and it’s straight forward.
I did make sure that I had sufficient cable length too.

What if the TMD boards were turned around, the fiddle yard then comes to the operating side, so you can get at it, then there would be space off the viaduct for a countryside run before point work to divert the tracks, that would give space for a gradient.
Your right Stephen but then the wiring would be reversed and cause complications joining up the electronics.
I think in the space provided you are gonna get a split level fiddle yard! Maximum is 4% & that takes over 10 feet to climb the height
Cheadle Ridge Lane Tmd if the old board is lower than the rest one line can go up the other down. Would help with the incline.

Chadwick Model Railway you seem to have the room is there a reason you can’t keep to one level. Would be much more reliable.

I assume all of the wiring under the TMD is to allow computer control? There’s a lot of work there, so not really surprised you want to keep it.

I'd be very interested in watching those too, and from a content perspective it makes sense to split them off from this channel, I just wonder if that would adversely affect your RUclips ratings (if such things are important to you)? By keeping everything together on this channel your number of watched videos could increase, and you'd probably pick up some new subscribers. If you clearly flag up the model railway video production videos, people could just choose not to watch them. Just a thought... Keep up the excellent work 😀👍

I've been watching your RUclips videos for some time, I'm new to this side of model railway I'm trying to create a country side layout there is parts I know I want to do and the other side I don't.

I’ve been given my families old railway layout which has been packed away for close on 40 years and considering which would be the best way to awaken some sleeping beauties?
I know there are at least 4 princess class, 4 GWR tanks and countless others any advice on best ways to go.
I’ve bought rolling road sets to run them on, cleaning brushes etc.

Hi Andrew, let’s take baby steps first,
They are obviously DC locos.
So a little TLC, a little oil and with care they should run reasonably well. Just be gentle and see how it goes.

Hi Jon, I found it reasonably straight forward although I believe some folk prefer the DAC 20, of which I know nothing about.
'Ello Charlie, love your videos. You could leave all the videos on this channel and just add a header like "Layout series episode "xx" - Merging Sides" and "Production series....". Just a suggestion.
One very good rule I was taught early on is the old "KISS" (Keep it simple, st*pid).
I have found in the designing my own layout that trying to get tracks to change levels requires lots of space, a point made in another comment as well.
Another idea to consider, is although you have lots of time and effort out into the old Chadwich layout, how much of it is going to be used properly in the new layout? Will the new layout be made with the same features and support the old?
For me, I would take what you learned from the old TMD and start fresh, that way you will be able keep it all uniform and the features built in as you go and not as a after addon.
But at the end of the day, these are only my thoughts. Either way, I will continue to watch with great interest!

I'm sorry to say David that it's either poor pick-ups on your steam fleet or poor track work. I suspect that it's the pick-ups.

I feel two separate channels would be much better.
Regarding using the existing layout I feel you may be restricting your operating potential.
I accept that the many hours you have put in, but I am sure all the electronics would be reusable and perhaps more satisfying to get the layout exactly as you want it.

I am very interested in video editing. I was good at it in “the old days” when we had video recorders and could make tapes to watch later. Now a days though digital processing is a dark art and, how does one create a DVD of these videos for posterity?!
I’m afraid DVDs are now dying and soon it will be impossible to buy DVD burners. Flash drives are taking over the world! I will cover video editing in the future.

After 64 years of modelling I may be the only one who didn't laugh at your backscene problem. As for joining TMD to Parkway it looks as though you may be creating a very wide board with limited access. I would move TMD to a start point at the edge of the cupboard and fill in the remaining space from the viaduct section. ( superb viaduct ) Geoff. W.
