- Hello, today is the restoration of a new rust find from my friend. At first glance, by weight and a piece of thick steel, I thought it was an axe, but after I cleaned the rust and dirt, it became clear that this is an interesting tool. I'm starting to restore
First, I softened the dirt with water and cleaned it further with a knife. To remove the rust, I used a remedy. After cleaning the rust, I put this tool in soda with water to neutralize the acid effect.
And after processing the surface with an iron brush, I realized that this was a homemade hand-forged hoe, an agricultural tool. It has an interesting shape, I have not seen such.
Next, using sandpaper and a file, I sanded and corrected the surface and shape of this tool.
I chose hornbeam wood for the handle. I used walnut wood and epoxy resin for the wedge. For reliability, I added a brass ring on top. I soaked this handle with a stain and homemade wax for wood.

Это сопожная лапка,у моего деда сопожника была такая
Да но лапке зачем обух и проушина?
Обух упирался в пол и занимался между ног следящего сопожника на лапку одевается туфель или другая обувь подошвой к верху и пробивается гвоздиками гвоздики загибаются при соприкосновение с лапкой внутри обуви ложится стелька и подошва держится и ступню не колет и подковки набиваются и задник ровняется и т.д. сапожник знает что и как делать дед меня учил но получился инженер электрик вот так Добрый вечер
Такая же лапка , но с сохранившимся деревом лежит у меня в гараже.
А по другому в то время ты её не сделаешь,но сейчас удалены все следы ковки, теперь пофиг что это,простая железка
Instead of using epoxy to secure the wedge, fold a thin piece of birch bark over the edge of the wedge to cover both sides of the wedge and then drive it in. This will not slip and the material is a natural material more appropriate to the age of the axe. Yes it works for axe wedges or any wedge. Laerned this while working with the Anishnabek in Northern Ontario, years ago.
If sewing and the going is tough, to pull the needle through, use a little piece of birch bark it grips beautifully.

what you have there is a single sided mattock and using it on the ground as you did at the end is how it should be used, nice work restoring it and it certainly has the look of something a local blacksmith made

Alex, I typed antique cobblers' tools into google images. I saw a lot of tools that looked a lot like the one you are restoring. The difference is that all the pics I saw were of manufactured commercial tools. The one you have looks homemade. Glad to see you, thanks for the videos. Beep Beep 😎

Right at first I thought it was a broken off part of a boat propeller.
I thought it was one also. It might be a different design of a hoe?

Yes, a smaller setup for small gardens with clay like soil matrix.

И прибивали подошву гвоздями к сапогам, одев сапог на инструмент.

I saw the resemblance to a cobblers bench as well. It may have been an old cobbler bench that a blacksmith repurposed into an agricultural tool.

That is amazing how you restored a garden tool. It looks like an adze but the blade itself is not sharp. It is used mainly for digging a small trench. Excellent work though.
Hello Alex, great restoration! It looks like a beaver tail spade or hoe for digging up potatoes or tubers. But I don't know why it has somewhat of a hammer head on the back end. And the blade wouldn't have a sharpend edge. So it wouldn't damage the potatoes as much. Thank you for another fun and wonderful video! У моей бабушки в деревне было много мотыг разной формы и размера, но рукоять у всех была одного размера - примерно раза в 2 длиннее той, что у вас получилась, а то и побольше 🤔

Nice! I recall them having a longer handle with a slight back angle at the head, so we didn’t have to bend so much.. used as an impact tool for roots and such, not for digging.

Ну вообще-то клин вбивают после того как инструмент на черенок насажен ! И ещё - это сапожная лапка , у меня друг ремонтом обуви занимается , я сам эту прибуду видел . А реставрация - Респект как всегда ! ! !

Некоторые пищут что это сапожная лапка, но как по мне она слишком длинна и недостаточно изогнута. Она если и влезет в обувь, то только в ботинок огромного рамера. За сапог вообще молчу. 🤔
Привет, это мотыга, просто выкована человек под свою местность.
My grandpa had a wooden version of this for digging small throughs in the garden. The garden was sandy loose terrain so it worked rather well and my grandma could wield it with ease since it was wood. He also had one made from stone, it was old and chipped. This was way back when I was a little kid in the early 80s.
I saw many things made out of wood and stone used by family members that one would expect to be made with iron, but I think they were just used to them since its what they used most of their lives.
There were iron tools, like machetes, but I found out that the machetes my grand uncles had were repurposed Spanish sabers and I almost lost my mind as a teen since some of them were passed down for a few generations and may have dated back to the 1700s. I wish I could go search their tool sheds and recover some of them and restore them.

Mattocks usually have a longer handle so you don't have to bend as much, also you get more impetus with a faster swing.

Very cool video, but I'm not sure what it is either? I do agree that it look agricultural in nature though. Whether it's a knife, ax, sword, or whatever this thing is, he does a great job on them all.
Alex, when you restore tools, it’s a nice break from the blades. A question, why do you not treat the metal with rust preventer for ground tools?
When used frequently any rust is scraped off of the tool. They only need oiling or waxing when stored for long periods of time for instance in winter.

Your field demonstration showed me that the handle was very impractical. unless you're vertically challenged. Long handle equals more swing to break up what you're digging into

It might be an Adze, which can be used in a lot of ways, agriculture is one way, but also for wood carving and game animal processing. If it is adze, my guess leans strongly toward digging the furrows for irritation of crops just off of the shape of the tip on the blade.

Can you give us a little information on the engraving tool you’re using. I really like the simple decorations you’re able to do with it.
I have very simple cutters made by hand from high carbon steel, they are primitive.
@ as have I in the past. I really like the pattern you’re able to produce with yours. It’s simple but sometimes simple is best.

Парадная мотыжка стратегического назначения, калёная и с украшательством. Ошкуровка стекляшкой... аж советскую школу вспомнил, уроки труда, винтики из арматуры и табуретки из дров. Хорошая работа, мастер 😉
Насчет сапожной лапы - сильно вряд ли. Форма не соответствует (тыльник то ей нафига?), крепление в "исходно-кусковом" исполнении явно не от лапы (остаток рукояти торчит вверх, по уму крепление в виде трубки должно было бы быть), и уж точно, закаливать то зачем?
Огородник я тот еще, конечно, но этой штукой бы грядки ровнял) хотя, это что-то сильно специальное)

hmm alex this reminds me of a tool i've seen called a spade axe the tool was specificly made for digging/chopping through large roots and tubers and normally has a bevel on one side of the head
