Under The Foresthill Bridge

  • My wife and I were able to take a rare walk on the mezzanines under the Foresthill Bridge, the highest bridge in California, and the fourth highest in the US at 731 feet from the riverbed below. Normally, this area is closed to pedestrians and available only to maintenance workers. During a bridge retrofit project, started in 2011 - and still underway, the workers kind of left the door open (literally) and we helped ourselves to the amazing views from beneath the traffic deck. While I shot about 15 minutes of footage, I wanted to share just a few of the better clips from our journey. I walked the length of the mezzanine for a few hundred feet, and as I got further from the Foresthill side of the bridge, I could feel the entire structure undulate beneath my feet, from the traffic above. While I have been on this bridge many times, I've never been able to get under it until now. Thanks to the retrofit project, there is a fresh coat of paint on the entire underside, making for some nice shots.

There were some workers painting the underside of the bridge who were yelling to get my attention, but they were a few hundred feet away and unable to get to me. I just pretended that I couldn't hear them, got my shots and left (quickly).
