    Having no experience with SPSS I really appreciate the information provided. I find that Dr. Grande’s explanation is easy to follow, and gives a new user, like myself, a very simple and user-friendly way to interact with the program.

    I liked that we were shown how to sort the sample into two and then three groups. Since Dr. Grande took the extra time to reiterate how to set up these dimensions for random assignment, I was able to better grasp how to work SPSS.

    This was a pretty straight forward video. Walking through how to randomly assign to either the treatment or control groups was great to see step by step. I liked how you divided the sample first into two categories, and then three categories. It was also helpful to see how you can use control C and V and drag in SPSS like you would in Excel to label the column; it is much more efficient than individually labeling each cell.

    I have never used SPSS before. I appreciate having the video start from a blank state. The video was helpiful in knowing how to operate the program from its infancy. The tabs at the bottom of the screen were helpful in seeing different variable views. There are many prompts to learn in order to properly operate the system.

    I can see very clearly how applicable to research this is and how useful this function is. It was surprising that Dr. Grande talked about the ctrl-C and ctrl-V functions. I am always surprised when someone does not know this function but I should not be. It is not as commonly known as I once thought so it was really great he makes note of that function. What I like most about this video is that it is made to help you understand what it is like to put this to actual use. Dr. Grande makes sure we think of the scores as a post-test and labels the groups as treatment groups and controls groups which makes it seem very usable.

    This video helped me to have a clear understanding of the role of random assignment. I realized that the use of SPSS is very detailed and intricate. There are many steps toward using the program that can help me to gain a much better understanding of the data and what the results will be so that I can report them accurately.

    SPSS was a program that was never taught to me in my undergrad. My professor would talk about it but never went into depth on exactly what is was used for. This was interesting to see how random assignment is used within SPSS. This looks different than how excel explains it. Seems easier to differentiate random variables.

    I didn't realize how similar SPSS and Excel are. It looks like SPSS was specifically made for statistics stuff, though. Appears to be more options on SPSS. Putting the participants into the two different groups was a bit confusing. I think just how it was arranged and the format it showed up as (the slashes on the left, etc). But in actual use of SPSS instead of learning about it, it may be more clear.

  • @CandyKaneLane

    I was not particularly familiar with random assignment before this video, only random sampling, so it was a new topic to explore. Is random assignment used in order to make sure that participants in each group are equal at the very start of a research study? My understanding of this was that it was random, but it helped to categorize participants into groups that best fit certain characteristics or traits they held in common.

    • @jacklinskibicki6098
      @jacklinskibicki6098 9 лет назад

      Candace Fernandez I believe random assignment is indeed used to "even the playing field" somewhat and to ensure that the participants are as equally distributed among the groups as possible (if that makes sense!) I didn't catch anything about participants having any type of commonality, and I thought it was just a simple random mixture of numbers. But I could be wrong! Definitely something to bring up in class.
