It's also really funny that they got Mike Patton in exclusively to voice the anger sphere, he's the lead singer pretty famous band Faith No More

Fun fact: the reason they got Mike Patton to voice the Anger Sphere was because Ellen didn't have the range to do it herself.

You probably know by now, but GLaD was spelled this way because her name is GLaDOS - Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.
You might not know this, but nearly every acronym created like this generally was workshopped back and forth until they came upon a pairing of words that made a silly acronym.
"Glad OS" to describe an operating system that is both emotionless and depressed, is a wonderful joke. They just had to find the right words to make it work.
"She's kind of a mood" is maybe the most true thing ever said.
that's more like a HUGE understatement.
"We do what we must because we can" is such an epic line, and sums up Apeture Science in a sentence.
The similarities between cave Johnson on Elon musk are pretty funny when you consider they both basically rely on engineers way smarter than them to come up with the tech behind their ridiculous ambitions and rarely make anything actually marketable that people want/need

Yeah, that line doesn't get mentioned enough. I love it. That line would usually be "We do what we can because we must". Meaning, to me, that we will try our best to do something because it is a moral imperative. The line "We do what we must because we can" implies that because they have the capability of doing something they must attempt it. It is the mantra of the mad scientist.
This song holds a special place in the organ that pumps my blood. ❤

Black Mesa is a rival company, and is from Valve's OTHER game series, "Half Life"
I had this song on my iPod for a while after this, I still know every word. Such a great game and a great way to end it.
Now imagine the emotional imact this song had when it came totally out of the blue at the end of a lengthy ordeal at the hands of a capricious AI, where you did indeed rip her to pieces and throw the pieces into a fire.
Such a great song to a fantastic game! Hope you'll love Portal 2 as well.

She is also the voice of Gipsy Danger in Pacific Rim, leading to my favorite personal headcanon that Aperture was heavily involved in the Jaeger program
If you ever watch Pacific Rim, the same voice actress for GLaDOS provides the voice for the computer system that activates the Jaegers (giant robots), and she does it in exactly the same voice as GLaDOS, but without the personality.
I was so very happy they managed to get them to do that. It was such a small throw away thing, and yet so amazing.
To find this song at the end of such a fun game, without expecting it, is such an absolute treat. It's viral now but for the first generation of portal players it was a real "if you know, you know" moment. And believe me, I am still alive.
I totally agree. Playing Portal the first time was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences ever. It’s short, sweet, and delightful.

Finishing Portal was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had. That song at the end was better than cake. Both Portal games are masterpieces.
I'm very annoyed that the ASCII art is cut off in the current build of the game. They need to fix that.
Also they desperately need an option to TURN OFF THE RADIOS AFTER YOU BEAT THE GAME. I spent an hour scouring forums and trying to mod this out to get the original aesthetic back... and I couldn't do it. It's ridiculous every chamber is pierced by that same song over and over and over.
@@carlotta4th I know! I have the achievement but they're still there. I've taken to immediately grabbing them and tossing them into the furthest corner or nearest emancipation grill whenever I replay
@@carlotta4th Given that the radios are part of an easter egg, I never really found them to be annoying.
I think the xbox 360 version of portal is the only untouched version of the game left unless you find a cracked version online

Written by Jonathan Coulton. He did another version with Sara Quin from Tegan and Sara. Some other Coulton songs I love are "RE: Your Brains", ""Not About You", "Creepy Doll", and "I Feel Fantastic".

I originally found this song on RUclips like a decade ago. I didn't know anything about Portal, I just knew about "the cake is a lie" meme, so I searched "the cake is a lie" and found this song. Obviously, it didn't explain anything, but I kept the song on my playlist, anyway.
I'm so GLaD some people are recording their reaction to this fantastic experience.
Makes me a bit relieve this moment, when you finish that game for the first time, without any spoiler.

Just so you know, the company that throws copyright claims at this song is not Valve, who actually owns the song and openly allows players to publish Let's Plays.
It's a bunch of copyright trolls, usually one called Orchard Music.
If it happens again, you should dispute it.

Black Mesa is the research facility that Half-Life 1 takes place in. They also "do science" there. But they're too preoccupied to help.

@@kevthajum The game never says her name explicitly, even in the subtitles. I think you can maybe read it on her in the final boss battle, or at least in the wreckage after you defeat her, but it's pretty subtle and easy to miss.
I love this song, but I always thought it was super creepy. I mean, GLaDOS is literally singing about how she's still alive. Great foreshadowing.
