Toni the answer to your question of how long it takes to grow pears from seed. We planted 2 year old pear trees, 5 years ago, so a minimum of 7 years to begin to bear fruit. The good news is that you and your children can enjoy them for at least 35 years (pears are long lived). We canned up 12 quarts of pears last week. Our continuing drought made them late this year. Try adding a cinnamon stick and a few cloves to some of your jars for spiced pears. Sending love from South Eastern Pennsylvania in the USA.
Those pears look so yummy. This summer, I canned pears in the quart size jars. I canned them the same way you did. I used 1/4 cup of sugar (the recipe I used says to use one cup 😬). Pears are sweet as is. Long term they get better. I agree with you about worldly situations. No matter who, it will take time to recover. God said to Joseph to prepare for seven years. I have been doing that for everything and not just food.
Hi Toni - the pears look lovely - you are making me hungry again, lol. I was up at 7:30 and started shucking 5 dozen corn and chopping 20 red and green peppers and 5 onions - making some yummy corn relish - just putting 38 1/2 pint jars through the canner now. Same process will be going on tomorrow too.
@@HerHomesteadSkills - I can large quantities every year - the corn relish is for the food bank, but used to make an extra case for my mom - who loved it. For myself I usually do 3 cases quart jars of tomato purée, about the same for salsa, 3 cases of different types of hot sauce 125ml, 90 quart jars of dills, 1 -500ml case of mustard pickles, 2 -500ml cases canned potatoes, 24-30 quart jars of pickled beets, a case of dilly beans, 4 cases 500ml coleslaw, 1 case quart jars sauerkraut, 2 -500ml cases green tomato mincemeat, 2 cases 500ml cucumber relish, 3 cases of green tomato chutney, 2 cases of apple jelly and apple butter, 2 cases plum jelly, 2 cases sour cherry jam, 1 case 500ml pickled onions.
Thank you Toni! I saw some pears yesterday and thought about canning them or making pear preserves! I also think we are screwed either way! Praying for God’s protection!
Like you Toni I go to the orchard for my apples and pears. Store bought in WNC have been waxed. It is also my opinion that we will need to prepare for at least two years worth of canned or freeze dried foods as our farms are not producing as they have in prior years and I feel food shortages will be a huge issue, irregardless if Trump wins the election as our soils have been contaminated with airborne chemicals. Your pears look yummy.
Homekeeping at its finest! Gorgeous pears! You are 100% correct; saving seed is always wise. Thank you, Toni. ❤
You are so welcome!

Yes, they do take a while to grow from seed, I expect if I ever get some land, I will also purchase 2 year old trees too!

Yup, I have been trying to prepare everything too, but some things are just beyond my control!
