One of the BEST groups EVER!!! I saw them at the Apollo Theater in Harlem as a child and they put on a fantastic show. It was a family affair because their mother and father came out and sang. They later introduced their little brother Cubie. No one could touch their harmonizing as far as I am concerned. This is GOLD!!! RIP Clarence Jr, Cubie, and now James.🥲. What an AMAZING group!!! I was listening to all of their classic songs today. I love them!
I have never seen footage of this group. They really had a unique sound. They just don't make songs like this any longer. Glad to know that it is captured here and on recordings of course.
The 5 Stairsteps were the premier young sibbling group of the 1960s. They were produced by Curtis Mayfield. Many of the songs Curtis wrote for them, you can hear his influence. The Stairsteps were underrated and actually they influenced the Jackson 5. There was a comment below that they didn't make it because they didn't go to Motown and they sang too many ballads. Those ballads are timeless. I rallied for an "Unsung" story on this group. One of my favorite groups of all time.
@@rascal211 We know that. That was what they did back in the day. People were just happy to actually see the artists. Communications back then were not like they are today. There was no way to access appearances on demand. We had to hope we were available when the artists were appearing on TV. I hate it when people criticize lip syncing.
This is a wonderful family, you could see and feel the power of GOD had everything to do with them in there life as a family. The music say it all, life could be so sweet.GOD bless them for sharing Love through these songs....

I have been and will always be crazy about The 5 Stairsteps. Their music stands the test of time. They need recognition. I remember singing lead on "You Waited Too Long" at my Jr. H.S. talent show in NYC? LOL
RIP Clarence (singing lead) you have joined Michael Jackson(leader of the Jackson Five, and Edmund Sylvers(leader of the Sylvers) RIP to those talented lead singers.
@@byroncrowley7396 You didn't realize why these three men were being mentioned together. All of them sang lead for groups comprised of their own siblings. The Burke family is the Five Stairsteps, and of course the Jackson family and the Sylvers family.

Fred Cash of the impressions introduced them to Curtis Mayfield The interesting thing I found in my research of this talented group was that in 1979 Keni Burke formed the Invisible mans band who made the hit " All Night Thang " One of my favorite songs to this very day
Clarence Burke Jr was a super star in the making. I don't know what happened in later years but pure talent and polish was never they're problem. I saw them many times live and they were great every time. Polished is a word that isn't used today in music because most today's music is trash, garbage.
That's what you call MUSIC. SINGING THE WORDS AND ACTIONS THAT YOU CAN RELATE TO. .EITHER YOU BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT.... FALLING IN LOVE OR BEING KICKED OUT OF LOVE. SING IT.. OVER AND OVER .
Actually, it was Curtis Mayfield who discovered them at "The Reagal Thearter" in Chicago at amature night in 1965. He sign them up to " Windy City Records" and wrote and produced their first two Albums.
And that was the problem. Curtis, RIP, was a brilliant artist, but a music impresario, he wasn't. This group was talented but they had poor musical direction. Their material, which was written by the oldest group member and his dad, wasn't commercial enough, and the group's choreography and stage outfits were listless. Moreover, there wasn't any promotional campaign to make the group popular. They should have went to Motown.
The 5 Stairsteps were AWESOME!! The Burke Family. Talented and fine!! They sang and played instruments. I saw them in 1969 at The Cheetah Club in NYC when I was in high school. Was in love with Kenny Burke!!! Loved their songs then and still love them today.

@Joe Jones, all of the 5 Stairsteps songs were not ballads If you really know their music, you'd know that not all of their songs were ballads. However their songs that made the Billboard charts were definitely ballads. They didn't have to achieve "mainstream" success, they had success just where they needed success. They didn't go commercial....and thank God. The Jackson Five emulated the 5 Stairsteps. I love the 5 Stairsteps just they way they were.

The reason The Stairsteps didn't make it mainstream-wise was because of lack of publicity and promotion. They never appeared on the cover of Jet, Ebony, or Rolling Stone. Never appeared on Ed Sullivan, American Bandstand, etc. In the 70s they made some changes musically and personally that hurt them. They should have went with Motown, turning down Motown was their biggest mistake. Motown would have helped them cross-over. There probably wouldn't have been a J5, if The Steps went with Motown.
The 5 Stairsteps was under the tutelage of Curtis Mayfield through his Windy-C label which was a subsidiary of Philly's Cameo-Parkway records that had ties to Dick Clark. When Dick Clark was forced to divest (because of a court action) in Cameo-Parkway it soon folded. That in turn caused the closure of Windy-C records and the Stairsteps then went to Buddah records. Incidentally, Curtis Mayfield had initially turned down the Jackson 5 because he had already had a young group, so I'm told.
