I did it for 5 years
Hardest part of working third shift for me was trying to find a cheeseburger at seven a.m.
Am Pm stores with nacho cheese dispenser.
cheeseburgers were hard, but booze never was. Sad.
@rickg.5171: Or Chinese food….
My coworker eats spaghetti for breakfast working the night shift
Liquor stores are a bit difficult also.
Day Shift = Stress. Night Shift = Sleep Deprivation. Both are catastrophic to health.
What about the those mid shift hours like 4-12 is it also bad or not healthy to work those hours?🤷🤦
No shift, means no job, is more catastrophic to the mind, body, and the soul.
I agree and disagree to your comment. It’s perfectly healthy to have a BALANCED amount of stress in your life, overall. If you include little to no stress in your life, you become contempt and lazy. When you experience TOO MUCH stress, you burn out and your health starts declining. When you start allowing yourself (yes, sleep deprivation is always a choice) to be deprived of sleep, continuously, overtime your body will suffer badly, with the possibility of permanent damage to your brain and body.
I work 5pm to 5am and get more sleep on night shift and less stress and a dollar premium😂
Thank Henry Ford for creating the 8 hour shift to keep his factories running all day everyday. It's been the staple ever since.
I worked graveyard for 30 years and the hardest part was others not understanding that it doesn't mean you don't need sleep. People would assume you were available all day and wonder why you couldn't go somewhere at 5 pm. It's the same as asking someone to go out at 2 am when they have to be at work at 7.
I love this comment so much, it’s nice to find others that get this.
Exactly brah Exactly 💯 🎯💯
Man!!!! You hit the nail on the head!!!
This is the one! People get so butt hurt when you cant answer every call or text right away like baby im sleep!

Well….with the cost of living being so ridiculously high, some of us have to work two jobs, in order to survive.
There are some people out there who just can't understand that. It's beyond comprehension. It's out of this world.

Anecdotal evidence. Seems there is a difference. You don't know what that is way shifters do.
You should try 12 hour rotating shift. One week days next week nights. I'm lucky if I get 6 hours of sleep
That's because you adjusted to it lol it only does what they are discussing here when your body is in the process of adjusting and if you have a job that rotates shifts then periodically working a few nights is just bad for you. It's what I did for 2 years and it absolutely sucks, I would feel horrible and had the most trouble going to sleep when I wanted to be sleep, and Falling asleep when I should be awake

Push ups is ok
And a shortened lifespan? No thanks.
I agree. 8 years in myself. Easier drive to work, little to no traffic, better parking spots, better shift differential. Also when you get off work, everyone is opening up for you so you're always the first one there.

Night Shift is only an issue if you're constantly shifting times from Night to Days or Swing, but if it's just your steady shift, you adjust over time. I've been working nights a majority of my working life and the only time it's been an issue is when I was having to do other types of shifts or working multiple other job times. If you're working just straight nights, issues are fairly minimal to non-existent; going to the gym is not so bad for me because a 24 hour one is right next to my job and I just go right after work and just before I go home.
I worked night shifts on Amazon for 8 months and during those months I was so stressed out most of the time, and after that time I quit because I couldn't keep up working those hours in the night.
I’m a RN who has been doing nights for 24 years. I’m 51, slim, in very good health. No issues at all. I walk at least 3 miles outside every day weather permitting as soon as I get home from work. I eat the exact same thing every night as I have figured out what is good for my body so I don’t gain weight and can stay awake no problem. I do not drink energy drinks, sodas, or eat sugary foods. Coffee and green tea and at least 30 oz of water.
Exactly and I think as long as you eat healthy, still get your sleep, exercise and all that then you should be ok.
Having a routine is the most important because that at least allows your body to adapt. The people that have to switch between day and night shifts got it the worst in my opinion.
Litterally this its all about your routine. Getting the required sleep and excersises and all that matter just like a day shift

I worked the night shift by preference for 39 years. I always tended to be a night owl so night shifts suited me. I worked with a very cohesive group of colleagues and most times, we didn’t have to deal with any of the “suits”. I retired 3 years ago and I find I still have trouble sleeping at night. I’m almost always up until 0200 in the morning.
I was with you, as a fellow night owl, until you got to the end. While I've never worked in a job that had an overnight shift, 2am seems early to me. If left to my own devices, I'd go to sleep between 6-8 am. I haven't consistently gone to sleep as early as 2am since high school (in the nineties)! I try to force myself to go to sleep early, but all it takes is one night of allowing myself to stay up and I'm thrown off my schedule for weeks. I'm sure when I retire I'll be staying up way later than 2am.

I guess I'm the one weirdo who absolutely prefers the night shift, lighter traffic, cooler temperatures and I have all day to run errands if I choose.
But I do go to the gym in the morning after work, I shower there, work out for an hour, enjoy a hearty breakfast, set my phone to dnd and pass tf out.
Been doing it for about 5 years and I love it, I will never go back to working 1st or 2nd shift if I don't have to.
And working overnight gives you the perfect excuse to avoid family functions, they understand and are cool with you coming just to get a plate and leaving 😅
I worked the night shift for about 7 years now for the past 1 year and half been away from that and I have felt alot more happier and healthier.
A huge thank you to all medical professionals. Especially the janitors all the way to the doctors!
You have to be built for it; if it is a normal schedule for you, it's not a big deal.
night shift people get shit on and got the hardest hours good for yall getting paid the same for nothing .
Nobody is built for it. Humans are not supposed to be awake all night.
@elee522 that is just not true. Who watched the fire while everyone slept? Who guarded the camps from raiders? Who protected the caves from animals? There are absolutely a sect of humanity who naturally leans towards being awake at night. I am one of them.
@@StuckTrippin You're just ok with putting yourself through that strain, it doesn't mean you're naturally a nocturnal person. LMFAO I work night shifts too but I still have enough common sense to know it isn't good for me in any way.
@stuts2371 no, I mean if left up to my own means, my sleep schedule is naturally to wake up mid afternoon to eve, and be up till 8 or 9
I am actually here at work (overnight shift) while watching this 🙆🏽♂️😩🤦🏾♂️
I absolutely do believe this. I had not worked a night shift job since I was 19 at 50 I had been on night shift less than 2 months and had a major stroke.
I have been working nights for 10 years & i love it!!
Sorry don’t agree with it. Some people are different, since I was a teenager I have been a night person would rather sleep during the day when most people are busting their butt in the heat, especially living in the south. I’d rather be up in the coolness of the evening and night with less noise and people shuffling about. I’ve been working the night shift / graveyard shift for over seven years. It suits me , less hassle , less calls for need by other employees and allows me to raise two teenagers without interfering with work hours or family time. It also allows me to get paid twice , one for the 40 hour job I do and again for being able to expand my internet business while working my straight 40 because most needs are met by the day crew. Not to mention I only work 4 days a week. As a single father and an entrepreneur this is what works best for me financially and with little stress while providing me with every opportunity for family time and maximum financial freedom.
“Only studied 14 people” - They literally just throw our grandparents’ dumb Facebook feeds on TV and call it the news. So glad I decided against that journalism degree years ago.
I've been workign overnight for over twenty years. So used to it now. By the time I get home all that work place nonsense is gone. A couple of things work for me. That power nap at 3 AM refuels my system. I also make my room so dark that even when I wake up I can hardly tell what time it is. The other thing is coffee. I always have a set time to drink my ONE cup of coffee. Absolutely no sugary drink or food. I bring my own healthy food every night. All I can do now is hope for the best.
I’ve been working 12 hour nightshifts for 14 years now as a respiratory therapist and it’s taken a toll on my health.
I work 15hr night shift 6pm to 9am 2 days a week
I did 12 hour night shifts as a nurse for like 5 years and after work I would have to then stay up all day with my toddler 😩 I was sooo exhausted I would go days without sleep

I switched from a grave job to a day job and after a couple months they put me on their grave shift. So now I have been working grave for over a year and haven't felt well-rested since. My mental health is hanging on by a thread.
agree!! after working at night for almost a year, it's getting a toll on my body now, migraines, feeling tired all the time, and even if i try to sleep during the day but the surrounding was too noisy can't help but only get around 3-5 hours of sleep, and it's stress... trying to change lifestyle slowly now
🦉Lifelong night owl here. I’m skinny but I don’t handle large amounts of refined carbs well. I definitely feel better on a high fat diet. Never thought my schedule could be the problem. I love the peace and solitude of the night.
Been working graveyard for over 5 years now.
It’s taking its toll to say the least.
How the hell did this get recommended to me while I’m slacking off on my night shift job
I've been working Overnight for 2yrs now. I got a routine i follow. When i get home in the morning. I take Z-Quil😴, shower, eat & in about an hour 1/2! Im out😴- i sleep for 7hrs. I wake up, drink a cup of green tea 🍵- then i workout 🏃♂️🏋♂️🥵- I'm good after that 😁
"were not supposed to be awake at those hours" its ok ok to live like that. You just gotta make sure you sleep 8 hours in the day. Its healthy, people are not doing it correctly . Its not hard. Close the light. Turn iff your phone.
Nope. When sun goes down then people must sleep too. Wake up when sun rises
Blackout curtains can make any room your in feel like night time, it's not bad, like dude said, less people in the way at those hours
Worked as an icu nurse night shift for a year and some months. Absolutely ruined me. Its taken me 5 years to become healthy. One thing that ive never fixed is my insomnia.
Try looking at red light for 3-5 minutes before bed.

I was a night shift security guard for 4 yrs & after quiting, i was not able to stay asleep for more than 4 hrs. it took 2 yrs for my biological clock to become normal again.
Oh waaaa. Your such a big baby
i did a couple years as an overnight fleet mechanic for a construction company.
it started out pretty okay, some adjustments and i felt fine.
after about a year and a half of it, i wasnt able to sleep anymore, day or night, no matter how long i stayed awake i couldnt shut down at all. i was always grumpy and my blood sugars(im type 2) couldnt be stabilized anymore. with wild swings from 9 to 17 for seemingly no reason.
No wonder after over 20 years of working overnight shifts I’ve developed type 2 diabetes.
Is that the best kind?
11 to 7 is perfect. Less job politics. You can be to yourself. When you get home, wife and kids are at work and school. But someone is always there in case of an emergency. You wake up in time topick up the kidsfrom school. Take a 2nd nap then wake to hang out with family before heading in to work. The roads are clear. Just pack a salad or healthy meal. Use stairs. And stop listening to bs case studies on the news because they don'tknow jack. There are plenty of people who work 9 to overweight and going through things. I do recommend investing in a samsung tablet.
Makes sense.
True, if a person is used to overnight hours, they'll be fine.
Why Samsung and not Apple? Not doctors but you?
Less Job politics = facts aren’t facts.
Super Weird Comment.
2nd nap? Doesn't sound fun. Yea, I'm sure a Samsung tablet will keep you healthy. Weird.
I just found when I worked nights, it was the double life that took the toll. I'd work nights during the week and try and keep a normal day schedule during the weekends. If I kept the regular schedule, it'd work out fine.
So what's the point of this study if nothing is gonna he changed?
To bring awareness, shine a light on this issue so that there *could* be change later on down the road.
@Vandicoup ERs, police stations, truck drivers, overnight stock, firemen, roadwork get rid of night shift or alter it any way and society will collapse.
Night shift is necessary "evil".

I didn't work the graveyard shift, but I did get home well after midnight for one job, and stayed up even later to cool down after work. The hard part is regularly being woken up by people who aren't on the night shift. Neighbors, landscapers, trashmen, telemarketers, and my narcissistic mother.
I should tell my body the news said I should be sicker. After 25 years of working nights my body has no idea it should be sick.
idk if anybody else feels like this but i definitely felt better overall when i worked nights, as soon as the sun started to rise i got sleepy, when it would set i was up like a light, i had more energy, i felt happier… now that im back to day shift my body always feels exhausted

Die up to 10

I did overnight shifts in the military for a decade with no extra pay, it was freaking awful. Saw 3 people die in car accidents leaving watch over that time.

And I do exercise and get regular sleep. However, I’ve noticed the less I get (on average) the better my brain performs. When I sleep ‘regular’ 7 hours, I am more tired and foggy. So it’s been an interesting experience with my cognition and experimenting with how it functions. With days I don’t drink caffeine, it also functions about the same without it. Also the quality of caffeine (energy drink vs coffee).
I worked overnights stocking and binning for five and a half years at a Walmart. By the last year I was looking bad and becoming irascible. And when I finally left Walmart and started a day job, my immune system was so low I suffered from something similar to Covid. Except this happened in 2017. Two weeks of being miserable and I still worked because I didn't want to look bad with the new job. I'd never been so sick in my life.

I used to work shifts in hospital, sometimes you get long shift (12 hours) or double shift (16 hours)
and yes you also get the turn to work at graveyard shift..
for me what most demanding is when the switch after the night shift, or the long/double shift that includes the night shift, then the next morning you must work at day(afternoon) shift..
you just don't remember what day or date it is anymore.. you feel like you owe a week of sleep to your body, you get easily triggered emotionally by anything..
I worked graveyard shift at an HBCU for over 5 years straight. I was a wreck health wise, perpetually sleep deprived, moody and exhausted. And always craving junk food. Fortunately I crashed out and ended up in the hospital for 47 days right before the pandemic hit. I say fortunately because it forced me to focus on my health. Now my nutrition is top notch, exercise is frequent and I sleep thru the night with ease. I feel amazing now. I will never do night shift again.
Definitely can relate. Without your health you cannot work
What about just sleep when you're not working??
@@mcmerry2846 The sleep you get during daytime is nothing like the deep nighttime sleep. Most humans have definitely evolved to sleep at night. My circadian rhythms were off for years.
