Hey Glenn I’ve got an interesting idea for a video, get a pro musician with no professional experience in production and a group of producers with barely any experience playing instruments and have them record a song with the producers playing the instruments and the musician recording them.

@SpectreSoundStudios I didn't wanna day it before. Cause you're mad helpful. But it always seemed like you needed to just dump some hours into specific exercises. HUGE props for letting yourself be vulnerable and showing where you suck. lot of people out there showing off their chops and inspiring others to get better. not many willing to show the rocky steps along the way and demonstrate that it's okay to be bad at something, so long as you're working to improve. lotta people saying it, but very few have the fortitude to show it. much respect.

The two biggest tips that has helped me when I learned to play was playing to a metronome and learning scales. The metronome helped me with timing and enumerated my speed improvement while scales showed me what notes I probably should be avoiding. For beginners, I recommend starting with a pentatonic scale since it's probably the easiest to learn while also being the scale that made 80s metal. Major or minor -- it doesn't matter, but you're only having to learn 5 notes out of 12. Once you have that memorized, you've eliminated a lot of guesswork and can just freely play without having to worry about what the next note should be -- something that would slow me down when I first started playing. Once you've mastered that, you can then move on to more challenging scales.

    • @grsfhhytff

Completely agree. I used to shove on old Horror films and do my scales over and over, unplugged. Rapid improvement doing that

when doing the economy of motion exercise, start on the low E string at Fret 1. then, after the first four notes, move down a string, but then move up one fret, rinse and repeat until your little finger is on fret 10 of high E. then go back up the strings (on to the B, then G etc. but continue to move up the fretboard by one fret for every string. This will help with using all of the fretboard, and will help a lot with your hand positioning and general locomotion when moving up and down the guitar.

I find it encouraging, as someone learning guitar, when an elite player like you talks about weaknesses and how to improve. You remind me of what Jimi Hendrix said in an interview, of how he makes mistakes when he’s trying something new. And then there’s the great Segovia, who once said he would learn something new about the guitar every day. And you say you’re not a teacher, but great teachers teach by using themselves as examples.

You're clearly better at self-instruction than I am. When I'm practicing, I hit a wall and will never break through it unless I have personalized instruction. I need to someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. I also suck at working on the things I'm bad at. It's so frustrating and makes me want to scream. Righthand technique in particular is my nemesis. I don't really play metal, which I guess is a good thing, because even after decades of playing I'm not close to playing as fast as most people can. You've made way more progress with that in a year, or whatever, than I have in decades.

Hey Glenn, your guitar playing is getting better which each video. I love how transparent you are about your methods. Here's a little tip that really improved my vibrato: when coming out of a fast run and ending on a long ringing note, try to do slow down the speed of the vibrato. It's hard to do in the beginning since your mind tends to be in "fast-mode", but slowing down the vibrato really makes that last note sing. It provides a kind of contrast between fast and slow, and it has definitely made my lead playing sound more expressive. As an added bonus it gives the impression that you are pulling off the fast stuff with ease, even though that's definitely not the case for me :P

When I wanted to "re-adjust" my picking technique, and try to get better grips, as well as better control for more speed run / sweeping vs. my old school ways, I too chose a smaller pick, and the ones I chose were the Graph Tech TUSQ pics , the tiny ones as well. I used both 1.0 and 1.40mm... They FORCED me to change my grip and the way I was holding them. Funny enough I too was moving to a closed fist technique as opposed to a index and thumb grip like you demonstrated. It took several weeks, but I was broke of my bad habits and right back into the good stuff! Keep on rocking brother, love your content!

I’ve really gotta thank you man, so so much. Not necessarily for the excercises, I’d heard of them before, but just seeing you getting better has been inspiring. I’ll admit, I’m just about to turn 40 and roughly 10 years ago I said to myself “eh, I’ve probably peeked, why bother trying to improve?” In reality, I was falling victim to the classic, “only kids can improve” bullshit that we tend to get stuck in our mind. But now I’ve been watching you practice and get better and….man, it’s inspiring. You really can improve at _any_ age as long as you’re willing to put in the work!
So I’ve been pushing myself as well, doing these exercises and a few others that I’ve heard of over the years (and doing it with a metronome, which has really helped!) I’m _actually_ improving. And while I will definitely take credit for my hard work I also just wanted to thank you for being an inspiration. So a hearty “fuck you” Glenn. May we improve until the day we just can’t pick the damn guitar up anymore :D

It's pretty much the spider excercise from what I have been told, but it really helped me control my fingers and keep my pinky closer to the fretboard so it didn't look like I was sipping tea while playing guitar. Thanks for the video Glenn, great work.

Uncle Ben has some cracking technique builders for sure.

    • @ralfullrich3697
      @ralfullrich3697 Год назад +2

Yeah, I wanted to mention that, too. It's called "The Punisher" and is basically the spider exercise with a twist, as it forces you to change upstrokes and downstrokes on every other string change (normally you would always do a downstroke on a string change but never practice this with an upstroke and so leave out half of the stuff that you should be able to do). This is probably the best exercise I found in the past two years and it has helped me enormously!
What I did notice here and what I'm also trying to overcome at the moment (as I'm guilty of it, too!) is that when you're doing the ascending run your hand is almost in a 90 degree angle from your arm. Check this: at 11:19 in the video you show the descending run before you show the ascending run. First, your hand is in a rather straight line from the arm. But two seconds later at 11:21 your hand is 90 degrees from the arm. I've learned that this 90 degree angle blocks the muscles leading from the arm to the fingers (it actually locks those muscles tight) and thus prevents the fingers from moving easily, you really have to force them to move in this way and you can clearly see yourself straining to do so here (12:11 for example). What you need to make sure is that the hand is relaxed and rather straight. I found for me it all has to do with how close my elbow is to the body (not too close, that's a blocker as well) and most importantly where and how my thumb is behind the neck. Best for me is if I have it behind the middle finger (or between first and middle finger, but not further left) and only the tip of the thumb is connected to the neck, definitely not the more fleshy part of the thumb as that also stretches and locks the muscles in the hand. I often find my thumb pointing to the headstock instead of to the low E string, and that's when my playing is the worst.
Seems that it's the little details that matter.

Today, I tried the "closed fist" picking technique for the first time and wow! What a difference! Much more comfortable and no more pinky pain!

Hi Glenn! Been an off/on again viewer for sometime now. More importantly I've been a guitar player for 20+ years, an still practice an enjoy it thoroughly still to this day. Self taught here, and I am stubborn in my ways! Though I've always took pride in that fact, it may take me longer to figure some shit out! 😅 Anyways, my picking technique has always been lacking something, and or just a tad bit sloppy when I increase the BPM. That closed, tight grip you have on your picking hand you showed literally change me an my technique over night! Not to brag but i took to it like a duck to water! It's everything I've been missing!!! IT'S GIVING ME SUCH INSPERATION an I HAVE SUCH A SHIT EATING SMILE RIPPING THROUGH MY DUAL REC!!! It's crazy what one small adjustment can do!! So I can't thank you enough Glenn, seriously cheer's brother!!🤘🍻

Glenn, feels so good to see other long time players who still have to work on some stuff (just like me). 9:42 If you do the "spider exercise" descending (where you lift off fingers) *make sure to set all fingers but the last one at once (!) to the next string on the fretboard*. This will give you a boost for legato, too. BTW: I spottetd you at the Guitar Summit in Mannheim. If I remember right, at the RuF Guitar stand! Hope you had a good time there.

Wow! Just after watching this video I went to band practice and used a James Hetfield White Fang plectrum (jazz iii 1.14) that came with the EMG Het Set. They’re smaller than my normal plectrum and the instant improvement in my pinch squeals was amazing! Can’t believe it took that long to find out this little gem of knowledge! Thank you!

Thanks Glenn! My pinky is also fused to my third finger it’s really hard to break out of that habit. I know you point out there are better players to learn from but it’s cool to hear tips from someone who recently improved and saw results. Sometimes with pros they’ve been so good for so long it seems like they’re disconnected from the struggles of beginners and intermediates.

Hey Glenn. I've finally got some content on my own channel. My most recent video, I experiment the difference between holding a pick with the thumb and index finger vs thumb and middle finger. And I discovered there were some things I found there were some things I found easier with the middle finger.
After watching this video, you've inspired me, a guy who's been a guitarist for 20 years to inspire me to turn it into a series.
Love the channel, love from the UK 🇬🇧

Ok, after 30 minutes of trying the "economy of motion" technique I have muscle aches in muscles I didn't even know I had. Thanks, Glenn...it can only make me a better player. Keep on doing what you do. Honestly trying to save people money on gear is a great thing even if it rustles some feathers.

Great tips Glenn! I still have a 90's era Guitar World(I think) where Dimebag himself suggests that same exercise! Definitely a stamina builder. He went on to only using triple picking(with three fingers) because there is an alternate pick string skip in there, "just to mess with you". Thanks for reminding me to start doing that again, and with your quads!
    Do your quads Bro! lol.
I'll have to dig that mag out but Dime did plenty of snippet articles back in the day. Cheers.

Those are great exercises! I learned it through Fender Play. I've been a long-time strummer and power chords guy. I took some damage to all but my index finger many years ago and those exercises have been really challenging and great for my playing and accuracy, building up muscle strength and endurance. Never underestimate the power in chromatic scale exercises!
    Great video as always!
