Great story. The security guy at the Portofino really needs to be briefed as to the significance of their hut. It seems like the final challenge for every Cannonballer is to explain to the security guard why they need a few minutes to park in front of his post to get some pictures :)
They are definitely unimpressed for sure!
That is exactly what I thought too. I wonder if any 2 cannonballers have had the same security guard encounter them at the end on separate occasions.
Seems like it would be wise to call ahead to him and let him know you have a C note for him if he can get you in quicker
I was just imagining the training process for them "oh and one more thing. about once a month somebody is gonna show up in either a super car or a highly modified road car, It's gonna be dirty as hell, and they're going to stumble out stuttering and confused. Don't worry about those guys, they're cool.
I need to make sure I'm not on any roads when this guy is driving a bomb at 100 mph without any sleep for 30 hrs.
IF U DO HAPPEN 2 C HIM JUST MAKE SURE U GET OUT THE WAY MY FRIEND 😁😁😁😁
Don't go anywhere in the country where is snows we run on days of no sleep with 200 gallons of fuel and 10x the weight of this truck lol
Take the limiter off that truck and it can hit 140 with a 6.2L, gotta make sure you’ve got a short wheelbase if you’re doing that or upgrade the driveshaft.
@slycarlo8747 with the edge juice in my old 6 liter f350 it removes the top speed limiter. Truck gears out at 137mph but the brakes are useless at that point
@singlekcnormally under 300 gallons on the rig but 6000 gallons on the trailer going around to fill up gas stations !!!
He should put a diamond plate on the top of the fuel cell and a fake push button on each side and snapon stickers all over so it just looks like a large shop tool box in case he gets pulled over.
I feel like that's a bit big for a tool box, at least he put it under a tonneau cover

Same bro and drive the same truck and mine is a z60 apparently
For real never heard of the thing z60 , but in Chevy language it's z06 pick up truck
Found out I had a Z60 4 months ago.

We appreciate Steve answering the second most asked Cannonball question. 1 - what about the bathroom? 2 - what about a truck with a bed full of fuel?
Did he answer the question about bathroom? Did I miss it in the video?
If you're medically skilled it involves a catheter. If not a condom and or some tubing into a bottle. Or the Astronaut/Fighter pilot tactic of wearing adult diapers and doing what any toddler would do...
My number one answer has always been how much did it cost to do your run?
The bathroom question should have been number one and number two.
@@lightningdemolition1964 underrated comment ^
OK next up is we need to see this done in a Diesel Pickup with underslung tanks to keep the center of gravity as close to the ground as can be. Maybe stop by and have a chat with Mr. Banks.
Someone needs to do it in a peterbilt lol I’ll drive
@SpiderBite88 my uncle knew a guy in the early 80s. Guaranteed 3 day delivery anywhere in the continental United States.
The 3406 was Cat's big truck engine at 14.6 liters. He was running a 3408- same bore/stroke, in a v8.
2wd first gen Cummins, light weight compared to anything newer. Swap in an nv5600 or a zf6 with 3.07 rear end gears from the nonintercooled automatic. I've heard it claimed if you can turn them, you'll back out before you find top end.
Ramcharger rear crossmember and tank in back, room for a couple custom fabbed tanks outboard of the frame. Use obs Ford switches and valving to change tanks on the fly. And have a working gauge for each tank.
Downside: frame a little stiffer than a dry noodle, aerodynamics of a refrigerator.
The second generation weighs more, but I'm not a fan of the fuel mileage with the p pump. Maybe a 24 valve. Still use the Ford switchgear to switch between tanks, and have to get the rear crossmember and tank fabbed, the ramcharger parts won't fit.
Anything new is making too much power for fuel mileage.
If you're going to do it in a diesel "truck", the best candidate would be something like a Touareg or Cayenne with a 3.0TDI. Not really a true truck, but they have 26 gallon tanks from the factory, and get about 29mpg when you're sitting at about 85mph.
I did it with a stock tank😂
If anybody knows or owns this gen Chevy/GMC trucks, they know how much of an accomplishment this is.
Dropped lifters, blown trans, pogo sticked rear end all possibilities
Starter went out at 8,500 miles. Never seen anything like it haha. Replaced under warranty but that’s a damn shame.
Nothing like the amount of recalls Ford has had in the past 4 years. #1 most recalled vehicle is the F150.
I've had 7 gmc/chevys in my business, never had any lifter issues on any of them. That's something the Ford guys made up to make gm look bad. Ford is also NOT the best selling truck in America when you combing GMC and Chevy ( as General motors) , very close to double what Ford sells.
Steeeeeve!!! The First Gentleman of Cannonball. You will never meet a nicer, more humble guy with a truckload of amazing stories.

Steve is such a genuine guy and even better friend! Always a great story from him!
Was waiting for the day you told your story on here! I still stand by my tiktok statement that we should separate the full size suv/truck record from the “sports cars/sedans” it’s a whole different ball game doing a run in one of these compared to a machine that’s legit DESIGNED to maintain 140+ on the highway.
This is one of those videos I've been waiting for. I've been looking into a very similar thing. Now we are gonna see someone do the same thing and go for the overall speed record.
This cannonball stuff is freaking fascinating as hell.
Finally a truck story. I am happy about this

Steve, I own a 2018 GMC like this one. It is honestly a miracle the transmission held up to this brutal of an endurance run as the 2014-2018s are notorious for issues with them.
I was surprised too! Completely reprogrammed and some high end fluid helped it survive!
I wonder if the 8 speed in the rams would be good because its german
@@tyler5087it is a German design licensed from ZF but the Ram transmissions are produced by FCA.
@@tyler5087get over it man, the GMC is king!!
I knew this was coming! It's only a matter of time before someone aero-packages a truck and smashes previous records. The thought of just never filling up is too tempting.
I always thought a huge tank in the back of an SRT Jeep Grand Cherokee would be hard to beat. It'd take the weight, and I know they'll cruise comfortably at 130-140mph with power to spare (maybe or maybe not from experience driving across remote Arizona desert..). Yeah, the TrackHawk has even more power, but the 6.4L is notably more fuel efficient and plenty fast as is.
On top of all of that, those SRT seats are incredibly comfortable.
There are other fast SUVs out there, but I'd trust a Hemi to do the job without issue or notable wear.. the German makes? I'm not so confident (and I say this as a half-German).
What’s the other half?

Love when your idea makes sense to everyone else and it's all green light.
Switch to a 2023+ GMC 1500 with the 3.0L duramax LZ0 engine. You'll burn half the fuel and it will chug along at 100+ mph all day without breaking a sweat.
Yeah until the emissions system puts you in limp mode or you have an aneurysm from listening to the rear mounted timing/fuel pump chain for hours.
@@daniels2761 I have 13k miles on mine already. What noise are you talking about? Don't comment on something that you don't own or have any experience with. I know 2 others that have this combo and they love theirs as well. Both of them have over 40k with zero issues.
It's going to burn more fuel because it's a gutless 3.0, driven like 6 of them

Anyone ever do the run without speeding? It would be all about fuel stops, traffic, etc.
to answer your question, yes you needed a CDL with hazmat, 119 gallons is the limit per tank.
No. It's a fuel cell. It's a non DOT approved fuel cell, but we'll ignore that.
It's for recreational use, not commercial. He is not bound to commercial laws. He is not selling or distributing. Tractor trailers typically have fuel tanks upwards of 400 gallons. You can drive a tractor trailer without a CDL if there's no money exchanged for driving it. His truck is under 10k GVWR.
This is true at the federal level, but Pennsylvania (iirc) forbids recreational driving of GVWR > 26k without a recreational class B.
That's not to say some state in between doesn't have a state regulation, but it's very unlikely it applies to recreational use.
177.816 states under 1,000 gallons capacity does not require hazmat training.
He's driving a sub 10k gvwr passenger pickup. It's a fuel cell. A transportation officer could give him a hard time for the fuel tank itself as it hasn't been DOT certified. That's the only law I can find he's in violation of, regarding his fuel tank.
you be wrong sir. call you state patrol office. you can't just carry whatever you want on the roads. They have limits in place to protect the general population @@JohnnyD1993

Can someone build a fuel tank with quick releases? You wouldn’t have to wait for a tank to fill if you have a system for quickly swapping in a full one.
Not sure why you would do that....that would require fuel planning to have the tanks ready and people to help do the swap. If that type of thing were part of the challenge, you could just fuel them with the specialized rapid refueling setups like NASCAR or other race cars.
@@ian3580 true, but that might require even more modification. I really don’t know how that is setup, but I think there is still opportunity in the fueling portion of the run

@@jordanchamberlain4377 Hahah yeah it’s neat. Next time I see this dude at C&C I’ll definitely strike up a conversation with him.
The oddball vehicle Cannonball attempts are by far the most interesting and entertaining.
If it’s 4 wheel drive you could save significant weight by getting rid of the transfer case. Without too much trouble you should be able to put 2020 or newer front brakes on the truck to improve stopping.
Southern truck with Z60 = 2WD. But the parasitic drag from the front CVs and tcase are more of a concern than the weight.

"Your gonna need gas" has to be my favorite line
You need to have a tube connected to your gas tank inlet with electrical pump so you can flip a switch and offload the gas in the back of the bed of the truck and to your gas tank while you are driving so you don't have to stop
The cannonball run community is so awesome, only in cannonball would record holders help you to beat their own record..

Imagine a run again with 4 men and helping support across many states?
Pretty sure it’s gonna be close to covid run
This is a great idea! Cant wait to see a diesel truck one go for it.... have the ability to average over 100 mph and carry the fuel!
What a story, what a voice.
seems like this would be the guy least likely to try to scamming me in this channel's history.
Such an accomplishment! I can’t even go past 110k without needing a new trans and needing a new trans every 10k after that 😂
I seen you at peoria cars and coffee and I noticed Pekin car show in the pictures cool to see you on vinwiki
I’d love to see one in a “family truckster” with luggage and grandma shaped fuel cells on the roof and a leash tied to the bumper 😂
I wonder if the truck has a tune. I have an F150 and it gets blown all over the place with the wind. I bet a tune for higher torque on 93 gas would wake it up a bit and help battle any of that high speed drag.
I wonder what the coast to coast big rig record is?
Congratulations!
I am curious if he added any coolers. I gotta think the trans, oil, and rear diff fluid temps need it at sustained speeds like that.
