  • The Groasis Waterboxx plant cocoon is a polypropylene tray in the form of a donut. The Waterboxx plant cocoon, or the smart bucket "ensures that trees and shrubs can grow in dry, hot climates without the help of irrigation methods.
The advantage of the Waterboxx plant cocoon that they have no energy to plant trees, expensive irrigation methods need to be submitted, 90% less water has compared to traditional planting methods, 90% lower cost compared to traditional planting methods and regardless the environment is guaranteed survival rate of + 90% provided one plant according to the instructions.
The Waterboxx plant cocoon can be used ten times. This means that with one Waterboxx cocoon plant can be planted at least 10 trees over a period of 10 years. The cost per tree will then be up to € 2 to € 3.

Interesting idea. In the next version I would suggest that it be built as two separate, symmetrical pieces rather than a single "donut." The two pieces could be made to interlock like jigsaw puzzle pieces. This would allow the device to be removed with minimal damage to the tree. I suspect that this device is so heavy that many users dump out the water before moving it to a new tree. Breaking it into two separate pieces would also allow users to move it more easily.

Dear Robbykube The Groasis waterboxx is actually very cheap. About 8 times cheaper than irrigation and you also have no energy costs, no maintenance costs, you use no scarse groundwater and once your tree grows, after one year, you use the box for the next tree. I am already doing trials in Africa with the Government of Kenya, of Morocco, soon in Tanzania and Ethiopia, and it is a matter of time before it is used on a larger scale.

I live in the high mountain desert and have many trees. If you don't protect them from hungry animals they will be eaten. In a desert environment anything green is food. Trees must be in cages until their bark hardens and the leaves are out of reach of wildlife.

Dear Battery 9876 The overflow is necessary. In 2006, at the first trial in the Sahara I lost my whole trial. In that protoype was no overflow and I got 90 mm of rain in 10 minutes. That was 22 liters of water that went in 10 minutes through the central opening. . As the box was already full, all the water went through the central opening and washed all the trees out. That's how I learned that an overflow was necessary. regards Pieter

    - Regarding the shape of the cover, the bottom of the zigzag must have a funnel shape, but not necessarily the top. So maybe you could stretch the zigzag vertically all the way to the horizontal level of the top of the box. That would enable to have more surface and collect more condensation.
    Best luck with your project.

    Dear Peter,
Your invention is fantastic but I would make 2 suggestions:
-why have an overflow cap? Instead collect the extra water from inside by extending the wick to the top of the water line. When the tank is full the extra water goes through the wick. You can use a small hole in the wick at the level of the bottom of the tank to have the same feature as now. This could be useful in less dry places where rain would have a tendency to fill the tank, especially in the rain season in the tropics.

What is needed I think is:
    1. Have a designated project to plant these trees using waterboxx system, that are specifically usefull. Like the Chinese built the green wall of China in efforts to combat desertifacation, africa and europe should built the green wall of africac (from senegal to ethiopia) which helps secure farm land against desertification. Why not raise a foundation which collects money from donors to facilitate such a large scale project?
    2. Planting trees with this system still is labour intensive. But it can be mechanized. Suppose for example we have a cilindric containe (someting the size of an oil barrel), made from compostable materials, stiff enough so that it can survive shipping and handling but not a barrier for the root system to grow, which get prepared with the waterboxx system and the tree to be planted, and we have a machine that digs the cilindric hole, lowers the cilinder containing the waterboxx and tree, and can plant a hundred trees a day. After planting the only postprocessing is adding water to the container.

    • @Delosian
      @Delosian 6 лет назад +1

Watching the video, I was thinking something compostable would be good. The container can be made of recycled paper or untreated wood fibre, which the tree and the weather can break down over time. I'm guessing the dew collector on the top would have to be made of a plastic material, probably polypropylene or polyethylene, to generate condensation at night.

      Dear SurvivalSquirrel,
The production of one Groasis Waterboxx causes the emission of 2 kilos of CO₂. You can plant 10 years x 1 tree = 10 trees with one box. One tree disconnects app. 1,500 kilos of CO₂ in 50 years. The 10 trees disconnect 15,000 kilos of CO₂. This means that the net CO₂ disconnection of one Groasis Waterboxx is app. 14,998 kilos.

The surface of the Waterboxx should gain lower temperatures than the ambient air for condensation to occur. This can only occur by radiation against a dark and clear sky during the night. I feel we have the ability to do much better with science to create better less toxic products both in the product itself and in the making of the product. The Growboxx is completely safe for nature and FDA approved (so you can safely plant fruit trees/vegetables with it).

I don't get it trees still need water after the first year, you can't just leave it like that!

The whole idea behind this is that the roots grow deeper to find enough water. So they reach the underground water supply/reservoir then the tree no longer needs the cover.

Trees need additional water/ideal circumstances to get established. You would presumably plant a species native to the area, and this box helps the tree survives the establishment period with minimal water.
