    I think, in hockey, there's a difference in not taking normal hits personal and dirty hits like these. If you get known as a dirty player, you become a target.

    The hit at 10:30, it was a playoffs game between Boston and Montreal. Zednik was Montreal’s best player in the serie and he was out for the rest of the playoffs. I’m still not over it !

    Man, I remember playing in Bantam (U15), and we were playing a home game. I remember about 15 seconds left on the clock then BAM!! 15 seconds on the clock is the last thing I remember before waking up to the ending of a bench brawl after the game ended, apparently it started because the other teams biggest player charged me (average skinny sized at the time) and smashed me from behind into the boards. I don't even remember but I guess I went head first into the boards and was out like a light. It's a hit I look back on because holy fuck I was close to a broken spine or neck.

    The reason most of these people arent prepared, is because you arent allowed to hit a player who doesnt have control of the puck. if you do you get penalized for interference, and if its bad you get a suspension (often times). if you commit to the hit when he has the puck but he passes/loses it that is legal, as long as its a clean hit.

    • @plots4
      @plots4 Год назад

      The officials have some discretion here, but generally you have about 2 seconds after a pass is made to hit the guy. If either of you change direction or take more than one full stride, it’s late.

  • @simplyskrypt3914
    @simplyskrypt3914 Год назад +4

    a clean hit in hockey is defined by the contact point and direction of the hit. shoulder to shoulder is clean. shoulder to chest is clean. you are allowed to push with your arm after the initial impact, but not to lead in with the arm. hitting from the front, or at a reasonable angle that they should see you when looking ahead is clean. hitting a player that has the puck or is 1second away from receiving it, is generally clean.
    contact with the elbow is automatically dirty. hits to the head are automatically dirty. jumping into a hit is dirty. hitting a player that is nowhere near the puck is dirty. hitting from behind is dirty. hitting with the stick is dirty
    hope i cleared out enough details to help you determine what hits are clean / dirty
    edit : as for this video, about 2/3 are actually dirty but some were just unfortunate, or in a grey area

    A Clean hit is one that shows no intention to cause harm. To Target the Body at its Core and not Limbs that could Cause Severe Or Permenant Damage. And A Dirty Hit Is the Exact Opposite a Hit the Hitter shows clear intention to hit the Head Legs Arms Ect Or when a Skater Charges the person they are Hitting. (Charging Consitutes as any hit that is executed when a skater is taking full strides or more than 3 strides(steps in hockey) towards the person they are hitting (Gliding into a person can go both ways but its the refs descrestion)

    • @marcan79
      @marcan79 Год назад +2

      Something also very dirty is when the hitter throws himself in the opponent. The skates are not supposed to leave the ice before you make contact, like Downie on McCammond

    • @plots4
      @plots4 Год назад +1

      As a referee myself, the hockey definition of checking is “making body contact with the intent of separating the player from the puck”.

    They don’t see a lot of these coming because they’re so dirty!! It’s the blindside late hits that do you in everytime. I play hockey and it’s a choice to ease up when you’re hitting someone coming onto their numbers. You have time to slow down even if the game is fast. So many cheap shots that we don’t need in hockey. Great reaction as always, Matt!

    We don't take it personal because we're grown adults who understand that you can get seriously hurt in the game of hockey no matter what. That's why we're paid a lot of money. Same thing if you want to sign up for the Army that's your choice. Like you said in the beginning You Do It For the Love of the Game. We also understand that these players have family and loved ones so we would never risk the health of an a****** just to see his family hurt

    You see one guy over and over in this video. Matt Cooke. There's a reason....

  • @sweetwater156
    @sweetwater156 Год назад

    When a guy gets knocked to the ice and his arms come up immediately, that’s a bad sign. The second and third hit you reacted to (so far, haven’t finished the video) ended those careers.
    Edit: Matt Cooke (the fourth guy) was a habitually dirty player. His number was gonna come sooner or later if you know The Code.
    And back in the day, concussion protocol wasn’t really a thing in the nhl. Paul Kariya said he got laid out and dragged to the locker room and he was given a shot of pain killers and sent back out to the ice. He scored again and has no memory of it to this day. It was a famous call “off the floor, on the board, Paul Kariya!” And his brains were so scrambled he doesn’t even remember it. Scott Stevens ruined a lot of players careers before the league pretended to care about the brain health of their players.

  • @cheryla7480

    About taking hits personally. Regular legal checks are expected. Dirty hits however are remembered…..the player responsible will definitely find himself a target, whenever those two teams face each other again….that’s when it’s taken personally….not just by the affected player but by the whole team. In Canada it’s in our blood, kids start out in hockey as young as five.. I think it was an American sportscaster tat said….F a player ever died on American ice, that would probably end hockey in the US. If one died on Canadian ice, it would not end the sport.

    You keep seeing this thru a basketball frame of mind. I understand you are a basketball player you should have done a little homework, maybe watched a game or two to prepare. You see these hits back to back because it's a compilation, in a game this may happen once or twice. I will say Hockey is the roughest sport there is and these men are the toughest athletes in the world except for maybe MMA fighters, women and men. You take pride in a fast hard bone cracking hit when it's a clean fair hit. I played ice hockey 16 years and if you clocked me in the face with an elbow, before that game was over, I would chase you down jump your back with my arm behind your head slam you to the ice and while you are seeing stars around your head I would beat the fuck out of you. You would never forget # 13.

  • @cheryla7480
    @cheryla7480 Год назад

    Clean hits have nothing to do with if you get up or don’t get up from a hit. Hockey checks ( hits ) are a legal defensive move. To be legal ( clean ), you can only use hip check or a shoulder check. You can only target the opposing player who has control of the puck. You must hit them between their neck and hip.. Some illegal checks involve jumping up and into the player , hitting their head elbowing them etc. Penalties will be given for illegal hits ( if seen by refs & linesmen ).

  • @cheryla7480
    @cheryla7480 Год назад

    You could see from the last one very clearly it was a shoulder check ( legal ) but it was to Lindro’s jaw ( illegal ), if he had hit him lower down…..it would have been legal.

    a clean shoulder to shoulder, or shoulder to chest hit, i wont mind. if i wasnt looking thats my fault. thats always the first thing coaches tell you; be aware of your surroundings before you do anything
    but if you throw the elbow, knee, target the head, or slash with the stick, that is personal, and as you say, beyond hockey. and if you dare hurt one of my teammates, expect retaliation. in this game or the next. remember my jersey cause its the last thing youll see before you go back to the dressing room

    Some of the older hits on here were legal at the time, but no longer. As long as you led with shoulder (not elbow), it was legal even if “dirty”.
    A few of these hits, along with concussion awareness, led to rule changes. Nowadays, the following are all illegal and subject to a major penalty and likely suspension:
    -the principal point of contact is the head (head contact)
    -taking 3+ steps into a hit, and/or leaving your feet to jump into a hit (charging/boarding)
    -hits from behind, especially 2-5 feet from the boards (checking from behind)
    -basically any check where the leg is the principal target and/or weapon (clipping)
    Several well-known dirty/cheap players were featured on this video several times: Tom Wilson, Dale Hunter, Matt Cooke, Scott Stevens, Bryan Marchment.

    The hits to the head don’t seem too violent compared to the hits in the nfl but hockey helmets are a lot smaller and less protective so it feels the same to nhl players. When these guys get hit a full speed to the head like at 10:58 their season and sometimes career is over. Also the whiplash from going 15mph+ to 0 and slamming your head into solid packed ice is super dangerous. Concussions aren’t talked ab in hockey that much but they need to be. One play like these can cause major brain damage/CTE later in their lives. Any hockey fans remember when mats zuccarello took a shot to the head and had to relearn how to talk and walk.
