I visited Nanjing back in 2011, also Shanghai and Hangzhou during the same trip. I have to say Nanjing is my favorite among the three. It is big but not chaotic like Shanghai and it felt more concentrated than Hangzhou. And the food is much better too!
Song dynasty is my favourite dynasty - they had nice food, nice clothes, and great art.
