  • The 90s Pokemon craze was one of the best things to happen to kids of that generation. I'll show you what it looked like, how it felt, and how these Pocket Monsters impacted our culture. These were the days before smartphones & social media, It was when Pokemon took over the world.
First playing the Gameboy games Blue and Red that started the whole craze, Joining the adventures of Ash and Pikachu in the Anime, trading cards and more that kept pokemania growing and taking over the world. The Big 90s Pokemon Craze was amazing

I got the chance to experience the Pokémon craze where it was everywhere every kid knew about it liked it and very few hated it everyone had cards everyone had movies, toys and etc. it’s sad because these days I don’t think there’s been anything else that has been nearly as big of a craze as Pokémon ever was.

Was looking for a dose of warm nostalgia after a rough year and absolutely loved this, thank you. I lived through the 90s Pokemon craze in middle school and everything you're saying was exactly like me - loving every bit of it, living and breathing Pokemon, pretending to be catching Pokemon and fighting Team Rocket on the playground - being friends-for-a-day with practically anyone because we all had this shared love for these little monsters and their incredible world. It was such a simple connection, and it was everywhere. I am also SO happy I got to live through the first years of it. Pokemon didn't feel like just another craze the way Beanie Babies and Furbies did to me - it was a full time experience, between the anime, games, toys, cards, music, movies! And while parents and teachers were fretting about possible negative effects of Pokemon, I look back at that part of my past as the fondest years of my life so far. The Pokemon world had such a positive impact on me and touched so many of us. The resurgence Pokemon Go brought about when it was first released brought back such great memories. But the late 90s through the early 2000s was the golden era of it and I can't think of any time in my life that I was happier!

Wanted some nostalgia that could make me want these times back so badly and this video provided well 😀 Pokémon, especially the games, were life itself. The obsession to get a bit further, go catch a certain Mon, just 1 more battle!...It was foreshadowing people today stuck to their mobile phones 😅 truly obsessed 😜 difference is my god I wonder how many batteries we all went through with over 100 hours put into each game ? 😅

Every playground had them. Some were benevolent and shared their knowledge- others used this knowledge for barter, a bag of Cheetos for the secret Being, cards for the secret to infinite master balls-
Truly, the internet ruined the magic that was hidden knowledge.

Toys and the anime were so popular, cards too. Kids would get in trouble for trading in school. Kids kept toys in their locker. Everyone had a binder of cards. The news covered it some some big archealogical discovery, trying to figure it out like the boomers they were. lol The movie was a HUGE deal! We all went to Burger King over and over again just to get all the toys. I had the OST for the movie on casette and CD. I got the movie on VHS the second it came out! The videos for the anime had mini issues of the manga based on the anime (Not pokemon Adventures). There were also full isssues released by Viz. There were cool gold coins that let you play some wacky game. There was the board game. We were Pokemaniacs! We had tournaments with Pokemon Stadium. We bought the TV guides that had the special linked covers! We ate the cereal and pasta in a can. We got the pop tarts. We even got the knock off merchandise and compared it to the real toys and cards. There were bedspreads, clothing, plushies, mini figurines, pogs, IT WAS AWESOME! I remember getting up at 6 in the morning before school every day just to catch the next episode of the kanto series. Then Orange Island hit and we got confused. It was fun, but where did it take place in the Pokemon games? We drew comics and talked shop at lunch tables. OMG the rumors too! There were sooooo many rumors of pokemon that didn't exist! I even remember my old ID number in Pokemon Blue: 13000.

It was a phenomenon of epic proportions. When Red and Blue were around, if we were lost in a certain area, we either had to figure out where we were on our own, or find enough money to buy a strategy guide to help us walk through the game. Things were tough for fans back in the day. If we missed a new episode of pokemon, tough shit. It was on to the next episode

I was born in 1998 so I was too young to even know what Pokemon was. Even though I owned Ruby as a kid and played it sometimes I never really got into the games until my teenage years when I played Pokemon Y and then finally went back and played the older games. I always liked the anime though, I would often watch it in the morning before school when it was on Cartoon Network.

So much nostalgia!!! I was in love with the anime which came out when I was in primary school. I remember we also bought this " sticker magazine" which had all first generation Pokémon in numbers, and then we would buy stickers packs (just like cards but in stickers) and we would stick each Pokémon to its number until the whole magazine was complete. It still is my favourite anime / kids program (yes, more than even Power Rangers, Dragonball'z, Sailormoon and other big hits of the time). The first and only Pokémon game I played was Pokémon Gold and I loved it!!!!!!! Made me love generation 1+2 Pokémon so much. My brother was also buying these small Pokémon figurines, he had a whole box of those which unfortunately he gave away to some other neighbourhood kids after he grew up. The only Pokemon game I've ever played was a couple years ago when Pokemon GO! came out for mobile phones and I wasn't fond of it if i'm honest lol. I do however remember how big Pokemon was though and how much it took over everything. I think it was a Woolworths I walked into once around Christmas time and I think they had a whole isle just dedicated to nothing but Pokemon. I even remember sitting behind a lad on the bus and watching him playing it on his GameBoy on my way to college one morning.
Was great to hear your memories and passion for it though, Dan. But yes unfortunately I was well above the demographic age for Pokemon during the craze, I had moved on to beer and women as my main craze hahaha.

No piece of media in history was bigger than Pokemon in the late 90s, neither before or after. You couldn't escape from Pokemon if you tried, it was everywhere. And keep in mind, this was back when plenty of people didn't have internet. Sure fortnite came along, and roblox too was also huge, and cant forget minecraft, but those just were not at the level of pokemon in the 90s.

Great video as always. My experience with Pokémon was very similar, it was really huge, it's difficult to explain to people who weren't there at the time just how big. I turned 18 in 1999 so even older than you are but I still got swept up in the anime and the game. I had Pokémon Blue and completed it with all 151 and trained them all up as high as they'd go (I traded with others and used a Game Shark to unlock Mew Too). By 2000 I had told my N64 and bought a Dreamcast, but I bought the Pokémon Stadium Battle Edition console just so I could play on TV and see my Pokémon in 3D 😊 Side note: My parents divorced in 1999 and I was living with my Dad. My Mum asked me what I wanted for Xmas and I asked for a Pikachu plushie as I figured it was such a big craze they would be everywhere and easy to get. Turns out they were sold out everywhere and she trawled round over 30 shopsand phones round lots trying to find one. Cos she'd only just left home she thought it was important to "not let me down"... I felt bad when I found out as I didn't mean to pick something difficult and cause her worry/stress! But it shows what a massive craze it was at the time 🤣

Grew up in the UK, was about 11/12 when it came out and quickly got obsessed with it. Blue was my first game (wanted red but it was sold out). The cards were my favorite thing, partly because of the friend thing you mentioned in the video. I'd recently moved to a new town and school when Pokemon came out. I was four when the anime hit the screens in America. That’s around the same time my older brother and his friends got into it. Since I am close in age to my brother and his friends, it was only natural that I would follow them into Pokemon. We had everything-the games, the stuffed animals, the cards, even cassettes of the show. I even had a Pokemon themed birthday. I have pictures of that birthday with little me wearing a red shirt with Pikachu on it. I received my first Gameboy on that birthday. It was hot pink and I called it my “Gamegirl”. My first game was Pokemon Yellow. My mom took me, my brother, and his friends to see the movie and received a Mew sticker. It feels so long ago. I miss those days sometimes.

I remember when Pokemon was big, too. I was living in Oregon state in 1999, at the age of six and seven. I remember vaguely seeing a magazine showing off some trading cards on the front, and I thought it was awesome. I felt a great need for the cards, the anime, ANYTHING Pokemon related, but my mom wouldn't let me see or have any of that; I had other stuff obsessed about at the time. That Christmas though, I got a talking animatronic Pikachu doll, and I loved it. But I still didn't really watch the show or collect the cards in earnest until later in life. I even didn't really start playing the video games fully until 2011; I had a used Pokemon Crystal version for my Game Boy Advance, but I lost it. With the new games coming in November, I felt like reminiscing about the series big explosion in popularity in '99.

Unfortunately I got Pokemon Red late in it's lifespan, I believe I got the game in late 1998 or early 1999 (North American here) and I remember enjoying but I never actually beat it. I think the furthest I got up to was the 7th badge. And then I eventually lost the game during a move but needless to say, while I was a little late to the craze in terms of playing the first game, I got to partake in the anime and the toys and just looking at how Pokemon was everywhere. I remember a year prior before getting Pokemon Red how so many kids at my school would be trading Pokemon cards in their binders full of them as well as kids playing either Pokemon Red or Blue on their Game Boy Colors and how much I wanted to play but couldn't just yet until my brother and I got Game Boy Colors the following year.Thankfully as far as the games went, I got to experience Pokemon Gold/Silver in their prime since we got those games when they came out. But aside from that, we got really into the anime, so much so that we got caught up in the hype for the theatrical release of Pokemon the First Movie, now that was wild with how much excitement was in the air for that movie lol.
It's crazy how Pokemon has been around for so long but I can't help but feel so nostalgic when I think back to the "Poke-mania" of the 90s because sadly there was nothing like it after the second generation of games but I'm glad I got to experience it.

You weren't late to the games at all really as it released in North America in September 1998 so not long at all really. Yeah I'm super Nostalgic for the classic Pokémon stuff, was such a great time. Thanks for watching 😁

@@oddpodshow Oh no what I meant was that by the time I got Pokemon Red, it was a good while after many other kids already had and even beaten the game haha. But yeah I guess I wasn't as "late" late as I thought lol And yeah with how much Pokemon has managed to stay around, seeing first gen, classic Pokemon will always take myself (heck, most of us) back to those days. It's bittersweet really haha.

@@oddpodshow It really was and sadly I just don't think we'll ever see anything like that again. Pokemon Go almost did but it was poorly handled and the fad dyed rather quick compared to Pokemania of the 90s lol.

@@decadentgamer3108 yeah, I see Pokémon as the last huge craze that happened. I can think of any other crazes that had such a huge impact than that.

I remember swapping a yu-gi-oh card for silver, was a great trade and I got pretty far but i left the cartridge in my pocket and it ended up in the washing machine, couldn't save games again 😭 and then I got yellow from gamestation. I miss childhood!
