    For a basketball player with no previous acting experience, Chamberlain did an EXCELLENT job of conveying mass and serious threat. It speaks well of how he was handled by the director as well.
    He didnt look like any newb chump handling those heavy weapons either. Sure he wasnt going to win an Oscar for the role, but he carried the role of a skilled, veteran, brooding, yet loyal and deadly violent BIG man.
    He and Arnold squared off so well here.

    • @shkotayd9749
      @shkotayd9749 2 года назад +25

      And for those asking about Bombaatas overswings, you are right. But the directors handled that by showing how physically gifted Bombaata was as well. He opened with a massive, full power lateral strike which missed and actually damaged a marble pillar. RIGHT after he misses, Conan moves in to take advantage with a counterstrike just as he should, being a thrust or cut. But Bombaata is able to react so quickly to this, that he forced Conans counterstrike to turn to a block which just about failed and almost ended up getting him killed.
      Bombaata was all about ferocity to the max, and yet had both the skill and speed to correct for errors and push back groups of attackers.
      He failed in the end, as he must of course. But how many great men have ever pushed Conan back to using a dagger for a win? I'll let you count.

      @@willchurch8376 Personally if they made it PG-13 it could’ve done better but that’s debatable. Sadly Pg-13 didn’t exist at that time so it couldn’t have happened anyway. The studio and the producer Dino De Laurentiis forced many rewrites which watered down the original story.

    • @inisipisTV
      @inisipisTV 2 года назад +8

      @@willchurch8376 - When a film is rated R there are a much smaller number of theatres that are allowed to show it and the number of times a film is to be shown, as Regulated. At that time, Film studios earn by the number of Film Rolls that they sell to a Theatre, not from the ticket sales, those goes directly to the Theatre Owners. Of course it goes without saying, the more people watch the movie, the more the Theatre owners will buy more copies of the Film (since continious playing of the film would scratch and deform them because of the projectors heat, rendering then unwatchable). That's why some savy Theatre owners would show a Movie to 3 or more Theatre house by using only one set of copy of the movie (a single movie would sometimes go from 8 to 15 Reels of films, the theatre owners would just just switch one reel to one cinema to another). After the Film run is over, those Film reels are destroyed or thrown in the trash, but some are stored in each Theatre companies storage rooms. That's why some old Film restorers would sometimes get complete copies of an old film locked away in a small theatre house in Cuba or Romania.... etc.

    The detail of "all for all battle" even bitting ears and with mouth abd nose bleeding and a couple of dagger puncturings, the mace failing a hit and crushing sone of the stone column, the visible sweat mixed with blood , the echoes of the hits sounding in the room, one tall muscled barbarian,more strenght than battle skill (arnold is 6 feet 5 inches or so) versus one taller warrior/soldier more disciplined /skill but less strengh and taller (bombatta's actor is 7 feet 7 inches or so). Hate amounted but retained through time that flows rageously at end, And a fight without ornamentings, nor dramatic "beautiful" actuation. Only two nasty guys killing theirselves to the limit.....
    This scene hides more than surfacial eye can see....
    Law vs chaos, discipline vs wildness, cold calculated intelligence vs instinct, loyalty to the govern and orders (bombatta) vs loyalty to own moral and pride, sophisticated wrap n (bombatta's mace) vs rude but more strong weapon (bastard sword of conan), armored warrior (bombatta) vs unarmored barbarian, and the dificulty of overcome the disadvantage of reach (bombatta's height gives him more hit range than conan). One not speak and only take care of himself (bombatta) and other (conan) only speaks for telling his friends to save the princess (being altruist).
    It hides more than meets the eye. It is one of the best fight scenes of the cinema.
    And of course arnold muscles are awesome for sight. And scenario is elegant and luxurious.
    Great,great battle scene.
    Hides much more than could be supposed

      I enjoyed both quite a bit. Trying to add kid like humor ruined some of the second, but you also got some characters with depth, and on a few occasions, rivals that damn near bested Conan.
      Bombatta was interesting in that he didnt particularly hate Conan. He was a very loyal follower of his sect which truly believed it had eternal good intended for the world. He was a professional veteran soldier who also happened to be a giant, who was a highly skilled fighter as well, just about at Conans level, with perhaps even MORE physicality. And he was DEEPLY brave and violently so.
      I like how when he finally sees Conan here and all bets are off, he conveys 110% "You? Okay, lets get this show on RIGHT now". And he attacks with all the violence he wants to apply against a guy who will, in his mind, prevent the world from being a better place.

      I think Barbarian was maxed on its potential, at least for the special effects and such of its time. It's pretty much flawless, despite being so actually unfaithful to the original Conan stories.
      Destroyer on the other hand, never came close to its potential. There was a lot of absolute magic with the cast, plot, characters, etc. It just sort of failed to pull it all off. There's glimpses of the genius throughout, but as a finished work, it falls short.
      It does remind me though, that most of my favorite 80s action films never seemed to conform to the 'white casts only' narrative that is tossed around about Hollywood's past now.

    I really enjoyed both Conan movies. I had been reading the books for a few years before the first one came out. I remember when it hit theatres and my buddy, who was being raised by his grandmother, invited me to go with him and his nonna Vai. I was only twelve then I think and when that sex scene with the witch came on I remember looking down towards Vai and she had her head in hands and she was shaking it. We absolutely loved the movie and about an hour after I got home Vai called my mom to apologize for taking me to a rated R movie at age twelve and how her grandson Chris told her the movie was just fantasy and blah blah blah 😂. God knows I replayed that scene in my head many times. My mother came to me and asked if I had any questions about what I saw lol 😂!! I said no just that it’s dangerous to sleep with witches lol.
    Sorry for the diatribe but this just flooded that memory back into my noggin for some reason
