A shear wall is a vertical structural element that resists lateral forces in the plane of the wall through shear and bending. Resist: Lateral loads, Seismic loads, Vertical Forces (gravity). Reduces lateral sway of the building. Provide large strength and stiffness to buildings in the direction of their orientation.Shear wall is a structural member used to resist lateral forces i.e. parallel to the plane of the wall.In building construction, a rigid vertical diaphragm capable of transferring lateral forces from exterior walls, floors, and roofs to the ground foundation in a direction parallel to their planes.The main difference i column and shear wall lies in its response to the load applied to it and its functionality.
The primary function of column is to transfer vertical load from top to the bottom. These concrete buildings in a sun saturated state like Tamil Nadu is a very bad idea. There are no measures taken to insulate the heat from sunlight. The complete steel and concrete structure gets baked in sunlight and keeps radiating heat inside. Those using AC's will experience high electricity bills. Those without AC's in such constructed houses god save them. These buildings are made just to reduce the time to build the project and sell. The resident will incur high costs later to find means to stop the heat. Copy and paste may work in computers but not in other engineering fields. Before adopting any new technologies for building construction there should be some thought process on the livability aspect. Traditional wisdom of local building materials and technologies is completely lost in greed to make money fast.
