My mother never encouraged me to cook! Yes my sister but never me! I’ve spent my life avoiding cooking both for myself and others. Since I found your website, I have followed some of your instructions and it’s been fun x
Kay Morrice, I can relate to that one too. I was an only child but my mom never took the time to teach me how to cook. I took home ec, but I just never felt comfortable enough to cook either.
Been there, mom didn't teach me but I've discovered that I LOOOOOOOOOOVE cooking. Have gotten comfortable making a few recipes of my own, over last couple of months.
Growing up in the UK, with my Grandfather being a baker, ginger cake was a regular treat. Sometimes the oven was left too hot and the top would be a little scorched, but custard soon covered that. I inherited his baking abilities (taught at his side, standing on a chair, wrapped in a big, white apron) and many years later made a couple ginger cakes for my parents. We knew that leaving them for a week was beneficial, so the fact that they took that long to arrive in the UK by mail, from New Zealand, didn't matter. What mattered was that at that Christmas, everyone who wanted, had a piece of cake that I'd made especially for them!
I've never tasted gingerbread cake before, but I did enjoyed gingerbread and ginger flavoured cookies. I actually can imagine how the sweetness and spiciness of the cake enhanced by the saltiness and creaminess of butter just melt away in your mouth with a glass of warm milk. Divine!
Dear Mr. Grady, I lost my mother a few years ago, and I can still remember the flavors of what she made, and she made the best gingerbread for us, and I loved it when it came out of the oven all nice smells. Such rich the flavor…. The smell-of spice and the smells cinnamon and molasses just added more to the days . Youtake care of yourself, sir, and be healthy, and be blessed
Love your videos Darren. The stories you tell that accompany the recipe are fabulous. I’m an American, born in Canada to English parents. I grew up on many of the same dishes you cook,,,,certainly not as great as yours. I’m retired now from a long career and love cooking as a hobby. Your videos are wonderful and charming. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Another happy childhood memory - this was my grandfather's fave with butter of course, and cup of hot strong afternoon coffee. The fragrance of this cake must be sublime!
How easily memories get forgotten in all the Dailey bustle. And how wonderful they can be brought to life again by a reminder to jostle a memory. I can smell the warm ginger cake and the butter melting on the warm slice. Even as a kid we drank a mug of tea. Thank you for sharing your video and this heartwarming receipe
It looks delicious! I make a more Scandinavian kind of gingerbread. I've never tried the salted butter on it, we usually put whipped cream on top. 🎄 Merry Christmas to you and your family! ❤
Yea it is the return to white chef jacket 🎉😂 Ah Chef Darren you are jumping technology here with smell-a-vision. Ginger cake or Gingerbread, same thing just called different things in dialect English. 😜🙃 I love this recipe because of the memories, the smell, and no matter how you call it the wee bit of butter on it before you devour it. 😋😋 Yum yum.
Ahhh Darren. Good to see you looking well. I watched your Chocolate biscuit cake vid last night. I've watched tons of your vids but not tried making anything.....untill now. I've got the recipe for the chocolate biscuit cake saved and will be giving it a go very soon. Keep up the awesome work.
I made your Ginger Cake recipe for the holidays - it is absolutely delicious! Everyone loves it. Putting a little butter on a slice is better than any icing could be. Thank you for sharing it!
The most perfect Gingerbread cake! Baked it two days ago. I used golden syrup and molasses. It’s fast and easy method. Thank you so very much for this recipe and yes with my fave Kerrygold salted butter and a cup of hot Earl gray tea with milk - amazing!
This is similar to my mother's gingerbread recipe which made a smaller amount and was cooked in a loaf pan. I never thought of butter on it. We had it with whipped cream or a warm lemon sauce.
@@ellenekanem Yes. A clear, cornstarch based sauce with lemon juice for flavoring. My mom also made a kind of carrot pudding, similar to carrot cake but denser, which she served with the basic sauce. Sugar, cornstarch & water cooked till it thickens, after which a touch of butter and lemon juice or lemon flavoring are added. It is served warm over a warm dessert.
Omg I was watching S5 the crown, and she (diana) mentioned darren I dont know why I had to come here, you must have so many mixed feelings darren. Love your chanel btw
I grew up having ginger snaps and molasses cookies. I cannot wait to try a cake. Thank you so much for sharing! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season 🎄🎁
Omg ! I’m just baking these cakes tonight, and even the raw batter tastes divine ! I am sat looking at the oven waiting for these bad boys to be ready ! So excited ! Thanks 😋👍🏼🇬🇧
Mr. McGrady, you make baking and cooking look so easy! You are incredible. I always thought making a Christmas pudding was so complicated until I watched you do it! Wow! So easy! I will certainly try it!! Thank you 🙏
When I cooked up at Scout camp in the summer, I used to make this once each week (Three 18x13x3 pans), served with whipped cream dollop on each piece. It was always a hit with the campers.
Kia ora Darren from NZ. This is very similar to my Nana's Ginger loaf recipe which I still bake regularly. Only difference is my recipe would be equal to half yours - ingredient wise. Also I bake mine in a loaf tin - which makes for easier slicing. But you are right - the smell of ginger 'cake'/loaf in the kitchen - is to die for. I always like to have a cake or loaf in my tins, and was going to do a Madiera cake today - you've changed my mind lol. Ginger loaf it will be.
I made your sticky toffee pudding yesterday. Also used your Buckingham rub mix on the rib roast that is now in the oven. Happy Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for all your wonderful recipes and memories.
If I can offer the most gentle piece of constructive criticism: It seems the final edit had some sort of dark filter effect? Sound is all there, the picture's there it just seems a few shades darker than it should be. Regardless this looks absolutely delicious and I'll be making it. I love gingerbread *anything* :)
this has been going on for the last several videos, either too dark or oddly blown out saturation making Darren look orange. this and the general pacing of his videos makes me feel like his video editor is somewhat amateurish. Darren deserves a professional.
That cake looks delicious! I love gingerbread, cake anything! I wonder if I could use a bundt pan in lieu of a spring form as I don't have one. I guess I would have to adjust the baking time.
I bet that is wonderful with clotted cream. I've got to try this, but I'll be a bit stingy with the pans and combine the treacle and golden syrup with the already whisked milk and sugar before I bring it to a boil. I'll give it a go a see how it comes out.
Hello, chef Darren! Thank you so much for your recipes. I'm not very experienced in baking a cooking and usually I mess everything up when it comes to the oven. Can you share with us what option/function of the oven you use for baking? Do you use the fan?
Just made one, i did it part your way part mine, what i had on hand, put in more ginger spice! Why do people make comments about salted butter always bought ours salted from childhood to now, actually didn't even know about unsalted butter until a few years ago! Asked hubby because his family had a food shop and he said there were customers who asked for unsalted! I always thought butter was salted from when they first started making butter to preserve it! Anyway i tried unsalted didn't like the taste at all, i guess it's what you're used too!
Treacle and golden syrup, you can substitute molasses and white syrup. Tastes as good. Almost. 🤣🤣🤣 This American better buy the right ingredients so it tastes better than almost good!!!! Enjoy your videos.

Goodness me.... My mouth is watering, just wish the piece of ginger cake is in my mouth instead of in chef Darren's 😂😂😂
