I have been listening to Morrissey and the Smiths since they were a new band in the early 80s. I too was once a young man who was as discouraged in life as any of you, then the miracle happened, and I met the girl who became my wife. Beautiful, intelligent and pure class. I came to realize I actually had more going for me than I had thought, for such a charming and attractive young woman to want to share her life with me. We were together 36 years. I lost my lovely bride to cancer less than 6 months ago. While I hear this song as "Will Never Marry(again)" Don't give up hope. I won't.

From somebody older who's older and seen enough, I would say, "Stop trying". Trying always seemed to me the surest way to screw things up. Just be yourself, be happy in your own skin, and do things that you love to do. Really enjoy doing what you love to do. At some point, somebody is going to notice you being a confident, happy person, who doesn't come across as being needy and trying too hard. Your only 23. That's still very young and you haven't even figured out your own self.
Also, give up on the crazy idea of a soul-mate. If you're super-lucky, you might find somebody who is fun to be with, is loyal, has a bunch of shared goals, and you can make it work. But you will still disagree, have occasional fights, and sometimes wonder what the hell you were thinking. But at the end of the day, you will be fine as long as you both know how to fight, how to forgive and how to never hold a grudge.
