      I have seen so many parents protect their kids from anyone who doesn’t look like a J Crew model. I used to work with a mixed disability residence. We had one guy who had Down syndrome. He was fairly non verbal until an older man adopted him as a brother. One person having faith and this 30 year old guy who also lived there started talking & reading within ONE month. That’s when I finally understood the old adage, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

    I absolutely love this series - it’s so important for kids to know that those with so called disabilities are just normal people too like them 💛

    • @punky19761
      @punky19761 5 лет назад +28

      Science with Katie it’s not “so called.” We’re disabled. It’s a fine thing to say. 😉 Also “normal” is subjective and not that important.

    • @SciencewithKatie
      @SciencewithKatie 5 лет назад +8

      Lisa TheCatDude Ah, I have a friend who has Down’s syndrome who is always offended by the thought of being considered disabled, I wouldn’t want to offend anyone else by saying it is a disability. By normal I just meant like everyone else in terms of having the same thoughts, hopes, and dreams. I didn’t mean anything bad at all by using the word “normal”, I was just trying to say that everyone is “normal”.

    • @punky19761
      @punky19761 5 лет назад +7

      Science with Katie Most of The Disabled community are perfectly fine with the words disabled and disability. It’s the words that we have claimed for ourselves, as apposed to the many other words probably made up by able bodied people. There are a few disabled people who don’t like the word Disabled , but then you should just use their preferred words for them, and revert back to disabled and disability most other times. If you refer to some people (able bodied people) as normal, and by default Disabled people not normal, a lot of disabled people aren’t going to like that very much.

      So right

    • @cancerisfunny9699
      @cancerisfunny9699 5 лет назад +3

      I disagree,
      I am autistic, it impacts me socially, therefore it is a disability and is not normal, the normal is just the most common. I would not consider myself normal or no-one should consider me to be normal. Yes you shouldn’t judge people based on a disability but you should know it’s there.

      Cường Lê Đức I have Spina Bifida, so a different disability, and sometimes I can tell when another person has Spina Bifida. But also sometimes Spina Bifida doesn’t look like my form of Spina Bifida at all. sometimes a person with Cerebral Palsy and a few other disabilities look like someone with Spina Bifida. But sometimes disabled folk have specific, Spina Bifida-like qualities. I don’t personally find that offensive, as long as you believe me when I tell you things from my personal point of view.

    Not trying to sound like “oh I’m a survivor” but I was at the Boston marathon when the marathon happened but you should do kids meet a Boston bombing survivor because that would be pretty cool

    I love that woman. She's just so chill! The older one, not the kid... weirdos. The team behind this approaches these subjects with a lot of respect, it's one of the things I love about this channel. And the kids involved are SO FLIPPING INTELLIGENT.
