She's beyond talented. How anyone could doubt that she will OWN Elphaba, I'll never know, when all they have to do is find her on RUclips. She is a phenomenal talent.
what do you mean by, "...no showing off?" to what, exactly are you referring? re: your comment about Ms. Cynthia Erivo's singing: "What a magnificent, restrained performance. No showing off, just pure art and emotion."
Holy shit! This is what I call world-class diversity and technical singing. Compared to her "Piece of sky" (from Yentl) - with that outstanding and soulful performance, this is where it clearly shows how she can control her voice and master that "mixed" voice technique that's probably one of the hardest techniques (in my opinion). More than outstanding. Love you so much, Ms. Erivo!
All voice is mixed voice. As long as you use your diaphragm to support everything. The thing is how much weight you choose to add depending on what technique you're using,or what style of singing. The reason you say is hard is because you have to pass a certain bridge when you go into the higher registers. Here, she uses less weight which falls into the more classical way of singing. But she has more weighty belts as well like the G5 in "I'm Here"
I didn't even know Cynthia did a rendition of this song. I was searching for a good one and pressed like before the video even started. By the end I was crying like a baby, her voice just always pierces right through me and every emotion runs out of my body uncontrollably. I love her art and I would never wanna miss her phenomenal technique paired with perfect stilistic choices and raw emotion.
I am always awestruck by how such a beautiful song has such simple lyrics. Pure poetry. And Cynthia's version fully captures the emotions of the song. Truly a gem.
I'm convinced she could sing the damn phone book and bring tears to my eyes. This is a higher range than I'm used to hearing her sing. She masters it beautifully and with grace and calm
kalden07 She’s not a bad actor either! Come February, she may become the youngest EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar? And Tony Awards). She’s got some tough competition this year, though, for Best Actress, if she is nominated. She is already nominated for Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics’ Choice Awards for “Harriet.”
There's a place for us, Somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air Wait for us Somewhere. There's a time for us, Some day a time for us, Time together with time to spare, Time to look, time to care, Some day! Somewhere. We'll find a new way of living, We'll find a way of forgiving Somewhere There's a place for us, A time and place for us. Hold my hand and we're halfway there. Hold my hand and I'll take you there Somehow, Some day, Somewhere!
I found this by accident and so glad I did. This was beautiful!! I saw Cynthia on Broadway in The Color Purple twice. The show was amazing but Cynthia was so good I had to go twice just to see her!! She is amazing in everything she does and has a wonderful future. A true star!
Every time I hear her open her mouth to sing it's basically going to church. There is something very sacred about her voice. That's why it's a bit ironic that she's playing the evil green witch (but not really).
There's a place for us, Somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air Wait for us, Somewhere... There's a time for us, Some day a time for us, Time together with time to spare, Time to learn, time to care, Some day! Somewhere. We'll find a new way of living, We'll find a way of forgiving Somewhere. There's a place for us, A time and place for us. Hold my hand and we're halfway there. Hold my hand and I'll take you there, Somehow, Some day, Somewhere!
Doing justice to this beautiful song, Cynthia only relies on the perfection and beauty of her voice - no embellishments, pure talent and artistry, brava Cynthia!
The great musical writers wrote for the theatre and that meant performances with fairly strict tempo and little 'rubato'. And after a half century of listening to every musical under the sun along with eveny performance, I do believe that those great songs have more magic when played straight. Cynthia Erivo gets the balance between stage and concert hall perfectly. A magical performance.
She speaks in an interview about believing that everyone should be exposed to all types of music because you learn different skill sets that can be applied to others
She studied in Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She's also a musical theatre actress. It's easy to understand why and how she can sing like this. Basically all singing styles will be taught with the same basis, then for each style the appropriate techniques will be applied for. She is not operatic in this performance. She just used some techniques which are used in classical singing more. Most of her techniques are used in musical theater a lot
FINALLY!! Someone who does this song Justice!! And I had to SCROLL to find this!! I had to go through so many other singers over singing, adding unnecessary melismas, and their voice is synthesized by sound engineers!!! They get thousands more views and I call BS!! LETS GET THiS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN SOME RECOGNITION!!!
Ms. Erivo is a revelation, in this performance and always. The special treat here, however, is the orchestra and the arrangement of perhaps Bernstein and Sondheim’s greatest composition. Listen again.
The most underrated star in the world. She’s only gotten better with time
Not anymore, I hear her and she is bringing me back!
Not anymore, with wicked almost 200mil at the box office, she’s finally getting her flowers not only in Broadway
she’s got her Grammy,Tony,Emmy and the Oscar is next🎉
Her control, her tone superb.
So true. The tune is pure!
Perfection
Also tremendous power!
I know, right!
Exactly. Amazing control
She's beyond talented. How anyone could doubt that she will OWN Elphaba, I'll never know, when all they have to do is find her on RUclips. She is a phenomenal talent.
It's official. Cynthia can do ANYTHING.
It’s the way she just eats every song she performs 😭 literal queen
Not only her voice, the orchestra is perfection
Her theatrical, emotion and extreme control reminds me so much of Streisand. Not her voice, but her choices, and not just on this song, on EVERYTHING.
She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard .
Amazing performance and musical interpretation. Should have gotten a standing ovation. 👏
she lightly lands on each note and caresses it in silks and fur
What an absolute goddess. Her voice is STUNNING. SUCH a good choice to cast her as Elphaba in the Wicked film, she will be incredible.
That was a beautiful rendition of one of my favourite songs
What a magnificent, restrained performance. No showing off, just pure art and emotion.

I know I am 6 years late to this party. But god I have not wept this hard over a piece of music in years. Thank you
The most beautiful song ever written and she sings it exquisitely. It's been my favorite song since I heard it in the brilliant 1961 movie.
Anyone else have to cancel their plans for tonight because they watched this and cannot function from crying hysterically? Asking for a friend
I cry every time I hear it.
Me too always
One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard
No
Finally, someone who does this song justice.
Did Barbra not do it justice?
Is this the same woman who sang "Stand Up" HOLY... Her voice has some incredible range 😍😍😍😍
I didn't even know Cynthia did a rendition of this song. I was searching for a good one and pressed like before the video even started. So true.
Sondheim was a genius. He could make the lyrics sing. So he was a poet.
The song is beyond beautiful and Cynthia is great, but we have yet to find the best singer for it.
I'm convinced she could sing the damn phone book and bring tears to my eyes. This is a higher range than I'm used to hearing her sing. She masters it beautifully and with grace and calm
Is there nothing this woman can't sing. I so idolize her voice.
You can't go wrong with good classical training. She's an incredibly versatile singer. Her head voice is stunning!
can hardly go wrong with passion and skill.
How does anyone dislike this? One of the greatest renditions of this song and what a PURE voice.
She is a Queen. Her voice is just everything.

Mga gunggong kace halos ang mga nagdisliked nito like they jst dnt appreciate music.
@10 🎶The Artist🎶 No! Renee Zelwegger won for Judy, and Elton John won for Best Song.
The fact that this is very high for her and she still sounds absolutely incredible!
This witch can sing!!!!!
Her singing makes me want to cry. No matter what shes singing.
she can literally sing to everything
There's a place for us,
Somewhere a place for us.
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere.
There's a time for us,

She just put an arrow in my heart
I found this by accident and so glad I did. This was beautiful!! I saw Cynthia on Broadway in The Color Purple twice. The show was amazing but Cynthia was so good I had to go twice just to see her!! She is amazing in everything she does and has a wonderful future. A true star!
I found by accident too
Her control is amazing. A great singer doesn't need to scream or shout but just reach for her notes. Beautiful.
Cynthia's mixed and head voice is remarkable! What a versatile and exquisite performer.
Watched her in wicked!!! Cynthia is phenomenal
Nobody today sings like this, this CONTROL AND VIBRATO and light clean tone
When she got into the first refrain, I felt ghoosebombs haha...Cause it exploded all over my body..The resonance 😭❤️❤️❤️
its really a masterful performance, the beginning is just breath, it makes you wait, and then grows wings.
I can’t help but notice the flute player in the purple who lowers her eyes when she’s not playing to listen to Cynthia.
I get this 100% I find even simple scenes distracting and close my eyes when listening closely, even at the symphony.
Beautiful, clear, lyrical voice. Just beautiful.
SING CYNTHIA..........ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.............
Starting crying before she even started singing. This is the song 🥹🥹🥹
Every time she sings, she never fails to utterly capture your heart and soul!
Every time I hear her open her mouth to sing it's basically going to church. There is something very sacred about her voice. That's why it's a bit ironic that she's playing the evil green witch (but not really).
Just beautiful.
She can sing anything! A superb talent. Top 3 voices...Karen Carpenter, Barbra Streisand, Cynthia Erivo!
Absolutely these 3 you mentioned on my top 10 . My top 3 are SARAH VAUGHAN , Carole SLOANE , Shirley BASSEY
She will undoubtedly be a fantastic Elphaba in the movie version of Wicked.
Every time I watch this, I cry. This song already makes me emotional, but her voice just dials the emotions up ten times.
Omg she is so beautiful and her voice like angels from the sky
She sings it with so much ease! It is incredibly beautiful
This woman captures the essence of the song as originally written and the emotional, sensitive meaning of love.
The original version always makes me tear up and cry. Her singing just made me cry more. Beautiful voice.
I would do just about anything to be in the presence of Cynthia. What an incredible gift to art.
Such a talent is so rare. Wow she is just amazing
I've checked out all the big stars' version of this song. Cynthia's is by far my favorite. It just touches my soul so deeply.
I haven't heard her use her voice like this. Brava!!
Oh man… it takes an absolute artist to achieve that level of vulnerability and power in the same piece! Brava
Cynthia Erivo's version truly captures the emotions of this song. And she has touched the core of my inner heart!❤
Beautiful beautiful simply just beautiful.
Thank you Cynthia

WOW!!!! I have never heard this song sung like that in my life. My goodness
Cannot wait to see her as Elphaba
Look at everyone’s faces around her they are FEELING her performance absolutely mesmerizing!
Why is her voice so beautiful😭❤️
Doing justice to this beautiful song, Cynthia only relies on the perfection and beauty of her voice - no embellishments, pure talent and artistry, brava Cynthia!
She has an incredible voice and boy can she ever act. This lady has It All!! Love her.
Just beautiful, I am crying. 😭 I love her powerful voice and her soft voice, no wonder she was cast as Elphaba.
This is the most beautiful performance of this song I have ever seen!
Okay elphaba 💚😭

I'm more of a Rogers and Hammerstein or Miranda fan
HOLY! CYNTHIA! 😱😱😱😱❤️❤️❤️❤️ i did not know Cynthia can sing operatic-y! I am shookt
I know! I just found out she was classically trained. This whole time I thought she was gospel!
she certainly knows her head voice well and swaps easily between belt voice n head voice so stunning!
Marcus Gabriel Goguanco, I love your adjective! Hahaha! Considering I sing opera - that was a cute attempt!
She is Queen.

It's so beautiful that it made me cry.
The song is sublime, and this is my favorite performance of it. Perfection.
What a gift. I wish there were more of this remarkable woman. I could listen all day… and night. More please
A masterpiece from Lenny, beautifully being sung.
I'm also a fan of On The Town
I literally sat motionless staring at the end screen of this for 3 entire minutes, not having any clue what to do with myself. Then I hit replay.

Just discovering her. Amazing! If she isn't already, she should be doing scores for Disney.
K. Fatimah Woolfolk listen to the cast album of the color purple. She's sublime. If not at least "I'm here"
She loves Disney songs.
