  • Barry Sisters - Vi Ahin Zol Ikh Geyn
    Vi ahin zol ikh geyn?
    Ver kon entfern mir?
    Vi ahin zol ikh geyn?
    Az farshlosn s'yede tir
    S'iz di velt groys genug
Nor far mir iz eng un kleyn
    Vi a blik kh'muz tsurik
    S'iz tsushtert yede brik
    Vi ahin zol ikh geyn?
    Dort ahin vel ikh geyn
In mayn land vus iz fray
    Dort ahin vel ikh geyn
Boyen veln mir oyf dos nay
    A land vu yidishkayt blit
Leybn vet dort fray der yid
    Yisrael unzer heym
Der yid leibt fray un ayngeneym
    Dort ahin vel ikh geyn
    Where exactly should I go?
    Who can tell me
    Where exactly should I go?
    When every door is locked
There's a world that is big enough
But for me it is tight and small
In a blink I must return back
    But every bridge is destroyed
Now I know where to go?
    I will go there
To my country that is free
    I will go there
We will build it all over
A country where Jewish life blossoms
    Where Jews can live freely
    Israel, our home
Where Jews live free and happy
    I will go there.

    Composed before WWII:
Music by Oscar Strock. Lyrics by S. Kortnayer, a Yiddish actor who perished in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Why does it say "translation" over something that not?

The English translation doesn't mention Israel. That was the whole point!

There was no Israel - THAT is the point. Now we have where to go

      But?
It might not be in the translation?
      They sing it anyway 😀

Leo Fuld was the first to record this song in 1948, and had a worldhit with it. It was also the very last song he recorded again for his album The Legend (the Sgt. Pepper of Yiddish Music), just before he passed in 1997.

As a Dutchman I have Leo Fuld on some 78 rpm shellac discs. Zichronu Livrachu.

Leo Fuld wasn't a chazan but a great singer. anyway I just discovered that he wasn't the first one to sing it. What I enjoy is that Barry Sisters have made their own way of singing this amazing song.

Where is Israel in the translation to English ?

  • @SpecialHelen

Who cares who sang it first? The sentiments are that we have a homeland. Before the haters start, Israel will still be there when you, your children, and your childrens children are kicking up dust. So take a meesa mashina.

Maravilhosas música e letra, Israel é o caminho.

@mokumtv The most pathetic thing is that this song was based on the old Russian romance "Golubye Glaza" - blue eyes. wasn't sang fist by leo Fuld unfortunately, however it was first recorded by him. Again I think that his model was way the best however I admire Barry Sisters for their own interpretation.

    The translation is problematic.
    Can somebody please help?

    • @sasha365i

the translation is under "Show more". which parts are giving you difficulty?

    • @veritas5004
      @veritas5004 4 года назад +1

@@sasha365i My Yiddish is very limited, but even I can deduce that the translation is so free that it amounts to a re-write of the original. That's a pity, as some of the poignant nuances are lost.
