“This should ultimately be Tolkien’s film, it shouldn’t be ours” that’s the exact dedication you want to hear from a director.
Tell amazon that
With the lovely agenda of diversity
@@ljnv Fuck that
Too bad they forgot that when they made the hobbit movies lol
Where does he say that?
Used to love it as a kid being "sick", taKing the day off school and sitting in bed watching the box set extras.
I always used to put the appendices on when I was bored late at night when nothing else was on TV (and I didn't have the internet back then in early to mid 00's). It was such a magical time to be a young teenager. Probably the last time when kids could be kids and had innocence, before the internet, social media and devices permeated every aspect of life. I feel so fortunate to have been a child of the 90's and early 00's. It was such an exiting time to be young :)
Me too
Omg this is crazy. I used to do the same thing. My mom used to call the school for me and I would be "sick" and watch the extras.
You literally just typed out my childhood 😂
Me too. Staying up late and watching them too
How easily and unoticed Tolkien could have passed away in the war, yet how profoundly it would have changed the world. Another name on the wall and modern fantasy might never have existed.
Makes you wonder what else the wars robbed us of, through the death of such gifted people
that's chad
It also goes the other way, interestingly (i. e people with negative influence). Imagine Hitler dying in WWI for example.

"The theatrical cut is The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson the producer. The extended editions are The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson the fan." -Peter Jackson in an interview.
Peter Jackson created the most extraordinary, magical trilogy ever in the history of cinema. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King are absolute masterpieces.
Those are his Silmarils. Never again can he recreate such a masterpiece
totally agree. To me its number 1 movie creatinons, I haven't found replacement yet...
He adapted the books into the movies, he did not create them, he didn’t even write them, he only directed them, and came up with the idea for the film
@@ericcheltenham7001 No way!? So whose that old geezer in this video named JRR Tolkien?
@@ericcheltenham7001 Huh? So when a book adaptation sucked it's the directors fault but if it succeeds it's all because of the original writer? I love Tolkien and his Legendarium and nothing can take away his legacy, but you gotta give credit where credit's due.
Tolkien had such a traumatic life and yet created something so absolutely magical and beautiful. I admire him deeply.
I would be so bold and say through his early traumatic life he was able to create it .. he was the best beside him only CS Lewis and maybe George RR Martin .. but who dont reach his depth

Escape from your pain sometime creates magic and creativity.
And here comes Amazon. Destroying all the good stuff.
You can tell just how much heart was put into this trilogy. “We had no interest in putting our messages into this movie. But we thought we should honor Tolkien by putting his message into It”
-Peter Jackson, 2002
I’ve never experienced such happiness as hearing Christopher Lee namedrop Tom Bombadil.
yeah something tells me that he was really looking forward to how they would make the Tom part and was ultimately sad when he learned it would not be happening
Just be thankful that we've been lucky enough to have been alive during the time of The Lord Of The Rings movies (if you are old enough to have seen them in the cinema first time round). The 90's and early 00's was such a magical time to be a kid/teenager and we were blessed with such amazing pop culture (great movies, great games like Halo: CE and Knights of The Old Republic.). It was probably the last generation where kids could be kids and had innocence/could be innocent, before the internet, social media and devices permeated every aspect of life. So be thankful that we got to bear witness to such an amazing time.
Good god do I miss those days. We were so optimistic, trouble-free and, seemingly, happy. As I've said it was a magical time that I'm incredibly nostalgic for.
Amen. Me too. When I’m feeling down about the world these days I go back to these beloved box sets. Glad so many people feel the same

Yes, it was a better time

I was lucky to read Tolkien in English in our English lessons . I am German and a grandmother now, I love to switch between the languages , English , German , Elvish ...this is still one of my passions ... and for sure the music of these fantastic movies ...!! Much love !!
Mae govannen!
You learned elvish? That's so cool
PJ “this should be Tolkien’s film not ours”.
Amazon “fuck Tolkien this is our show now”.
This trilogy is a miracle. The skill, care and at times luck of the pre production and shoot is a once in a lifetime occurrence. Just imagine if this had been a single 2 hour film, that’s what most studios were offering Jackson. These films mean everything to me.
Was thinking this, just the sheer scale of the project and number of different people involved. It's almost bonkers that the studio went for it, back in the 90s to invest so much on such a big high risk project for a series of fantasy films. I think the LOTR series is a testament to how passion and business can pay off. When absolutely everyone is united in their love for the project, and wants it to succeed no matter what, u can achieve great things.
"You did not go around editing Tolkien" is my favorite part in this. I don't speak English as my first language, but it's the sincere beauty and extremely careful selection of words that makes the Lord of the Rings great for me. Any editor involved would probably only make it more accessible and therefore less colorful in expression.
“If I said it was good enough to publish, it was published.”
That guy is awesome.
21:40 This attitude is what made the films great
The appendices are like a 4th film, depicting the journey of all the cast and crew
21:40 This is exactly why these films remained masterpieces 20 years later

Thank god for Peter J's respect for the original book. It must have been a special time in their lives, as I can only imagine how much it would mean to me. I mean what an unbelievable mission to take on
Can we just take a moment and acknowledge that Sean Bean was involved with the filmed adaptations of two of the greatest fantasy stories of all time? The man's a legend.

Bonkers to think how much of the modern fantasy genre was codified by one man.
It’s truly remarkable, the respect the filmmakers and Peter Jackson in particular have for the source material. You’re hard pressed to find anyone adapting something today to have the same level of reverence for the source.
Idk why I am teary-eyed while watching this.
Because The Lord of the Rings is one of the most ambitious, deep, and simply Good pieces of literature in any language, and no books have ever been more faithfully transferred from book to screen. It is miraculous that we have these films. You are watching them who performed that miracle. It's magic.
Magic and nostalgia.
I just want to hug Peter Jackson. Ever since seeing Bad taste for the first time I could see an incredible level of creativity that I just knew was special. When Lord of the rings was made I wasn't surprised a bit. I knew I would be seeing magic from him! He'll always be Derrick to me.... 😆😉😎
thank God PJ and team convinced the producers LOTR deserved a 3-movie adaptation instead of 1. Now we have a 12 hour-long journey through Tolkien's glorious middle earth. And at times even that doesn't feel long enough! Then aahhh... the appendices
All that into one movie... It probably would have ended up being longer than 4 hours! And not as impactful.
Bob Shaye wasn't perfect. Like how he handled the Nightmare on Elm St series but that was a great decision.
The extended edition appendices are as valuable as the main work. Brilliant to see this on YT 👍🏼
I read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy in school during the early 80's and absolutely loved them. Then Peter Jackson made the films and they were marvellous, he did such a fantastic job of putting them on the big screen and it was such a pleasure to watch them in crowded cinema's, with everyone engrossed in the films.

The movie is great. The book is incredibly overrated, quite boring and badly written.
The respect and completely unbiased dedication to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien among these filmmakers is something I hope the producers of the upcoming series will try to emulate. Doubtful, unfortunately.
Unfortunately it's not gonna happen, dumpster fire garbage if there ever is one.
11:28 oh how far we have strayed
Imagine being a non English speaking person with great Beliefs in your religion and when you are 10 years old you come across this Great thing, called Lord Of the Ring. Caught my attention, I was scared, anxious, but my eyes couldn’t leave the screen. I was in search of the movie to watch it completely but never was able to find the whole trilogy cause I didn’t knew it existed. I watched the movie here and there but not in order and was drawn to it like the ring draws you. Being a kid, not having any money, no electricity in your home but still managed to watched it here and there that’s what J.R.R Tolkiens life long work has left the affect on someone in another part of the world. The Hobbit was released and then after watching that here and there I found out that there’s something bigger. If I ever get affected by memory loss I have my will ready so I can sit back and watch all of this from the beginning to end.
I doubt the new Amazon LOTR showrunners understand those books like this guys.
its sad that Amazon is not using the same mindset when creating the new series, by changing how characters depictions based on racial quotas and rewriting key figures to fit their new narrative
There is only a trailer. You are as toxic as a ringwraith to judge something that isn't even out yet.
The only agenda is the evil in you your heart.
@@EricHamm I have read what the directors said about the show. They say that it is up to them to change tolkiens works to fit todays political climate. That means they are not going along with the material and will be making things up that are not cannon
Nor close to the text. I can already see this all from the trailer, race switching multiple characters that do not make sense or resemble what is in the text and putting hobbits that were supposed to appear a millennium in the future. It was also hinted that Gandalf will show up which also shows that they do not know when characters actually enter the story. They couldn’t even find actors that were similar to previous LOTR actors such as Elrond and Galadriel. They even had the audacity to change how the characters acted in the text such as a “Warrior Galadriel”, nothing about that can be found in the text because it doesn’t exist.
Tolkiens work is based off of Norse a Saxon culture and mythology and to change that means you are making a different show, not one from Tolkien. They should remove the Lord of the Rings part and be done with it.
It's beautiful to see so many people loving what they do, and doing it the best they can, for them, and others to enjoy the result.
Yooooo this is nostalgia for me. I loved when I was a kid growing up watching the box sets of these, I clouding the amazing extended versions. I loved watching all of the behind the scenes so much
'Editing Tolkien would be the absolute final sin' .... the one time Amazon isn't listening to us.
I still can't believe Amazon ghosted Peter Jackson. He would have been invaluable help.
What i adore the most is the loyalty and love of Sam for his dearest friend in the whole of the story, even in the end Sam reaches out to save Frodo ❤️. Whatever is written in the novels and the lore is made sweeter by the expounding one certain aspect that serve to enrich the overall tale. Excellent interpretation and bought to life the realms, the various cultures and the shared dangers, loves and heroism.
As Peter Jackson said, Tolkien spent his whole life creating Middle Earth, its history, peoples, cultures, languages et al. But according to Amazon's "Superfans" (coff splutter) he didn't do enough and it needs more inclusivity and diversity and representation to make it meaningful to them in the 21st century. I'm sure narcissism has nothing to do with it at all (again... coff splutter).
History will reject their apocrypha
Those aren't fans, they're paid posers. Cringe!
Tolkien was a racist who couldn’t see outside the fragile, limited scope of his tiny white world. There’s nothing wrong with taking a fantasy world and adding in elements from other cultures so that fans of every background can see themselves represented as they want on screen. Go cry about something important, boomer
Listening to Jackson talk with passion like this is like listening to Lucas when he still had people to push back.
The Hobbit trilogy was Jar Jar, but that doesn’t ruin the spark of greatness that was TLotR.
The Beatles documentary was him coming back to respecting the material, I hope that he continues in that, wherever it leads him.
God, am I so fucking done with this moronic 1:1 comparison of Lucas to Jackson. And The Hobbit is and always was better than The Prequels (Revenge of the Sith wins out there though), and their flaws as films come from a situation that is RADICALLY different to what Lucas had on the prequels.
"The Silmarillian" needs to be made into a movie just like It's sequels.
“Watch the LotR appendices” should be the standard answer to ANYONE who tries to argue in favor of the cultural vandalism that is Rings of Power
This has aged so incredibly well, as today we are at the stage of which Amazon has released a trailer for their new LOTR show, and a super fan cut. It is chalked full of their own "message", allegory and it has been modernized to fit the politics and social trends of today. The "super fans" praise it's ability to better represent diversity and the mindset of current day.
It stands in stark contrast in every way to everything that was said in the first 30 minutes of this video. PJ, Fran and Phillipa were fans who loved the source content. I get the feeling the team on the new show do not.
Im here after seen the superfan thing... God what a way to disrespect the work hard hard work of Tolkien, he and mr Christopher Lee are revolting in their graves

I had to read The Hobbit in English Lit and hated the idea, but once I sank my mind into it I was fascinated and hooked. I can remember debating this and that with my teacher and her being amused at the idea this heavy metal stoner kid with an Ozzy headband and black leather jacket who played guitar all the sudden is an “intellectual” and took it seriously. That’s the power of Tolkien. I have the director’s cut without the missing scenes. I still watch them. And I am still a metal head! Lol
After seeing how bad it can get with the rings of power, I take back every bad thing I ever said about these films.
I see now that Jackson and crew are GODS of adapting Tolkien's work. Every change is rooted in Tolkien, even when it's different in the book it's still Tolkien's work just re arranged.
As opposed to Amazon...who threw the source material in the trash and wrote a completely made up story with the names of Tolkien's characters.

I originally read The Hobbit as required reading in freshman year (1974) of high school. As we were about half way through, one of my classmates (Dave Hobbs) mentioned that there was a trilogy of books that followed The Hobbit. They were The Lord of the Rings. So after reading The Hobbit, I started reading the trilogy, which I finished in the summer after freshmen year. I read The Hobbit and TLOTR for a 2nd time in order to refresh my memory before I went to see the movies (approx 2002)... I tried to read The Silmarilion, but I could NOT get past page 20! There was just too much info for my brain to absorb! I may get around to it before too long. I just have to find it at home 🙂
I am once again promoting the canonization of JRR Tolkien
That scene in the trailer just with the fellowship walking over the hill and I could instantly recognise all nine of them just shows how genius the casting and costuming was. Think I might have hyperventilated first time I saw it.
My father read The Hobbit to me as a kid. it was the large illustrated edition with the dragon Smaug on the clear cover with the dwarven company on the side of the mountain.

21:40 This is what any director taking on an author’s work should have as a mindset.
I’m glad Jackson got that job. Today we see that Hollywood will likely not see anyone with that attitude behind film making, so we get all these horrible adaptions of beloved books; filled with politics and ideals the authors never intended to present. Timeless stories are not welcome, it’s simply movie making on industrial scale now, made to sell quickly and rot away.
Greatest movie(s) of all time.
The Hobbit was read to us on rainy days during recess in the 6th grade in rural Connecticut. I had been told about Hobbits a couple years earlier and we kids had attempted to use basement window wells as a hobbit house. By 1965 I had decided to buy and read these stories on my own. My Ballantine editions were lent out many times and always returned. I read them a dozen times or more before I retired them, gratefully, for a newer set. We felt the world would be an adventure and evil was quite real.
